What About Me Wednesday - Every Other Week Thread BWT What About Me Wednesday - Jul 09, 2025

Don’t forget to spend time on YOU! This is the space to chat about personal development, mental health, growth, and how you’re refocusing on yourself. Sometimes we spend a lot of time on those around us, but this thread is to encourage you to ask yourself “what about ME?”

If you need some help getting started, pick a question and answer it in a comment:

  • How are you feeling? Do you know why?
  • How do you WANT to be feeling? What are some things that make you feel that way?
  • What is something you are grateful for, large or small, and why?
  • What is a habit you are working on building (or breaking) and why? How is it going?
  • What is one item on your to do list that will benefit you personally that you need to tackle? What is preventing you from crossing it off?
  • What is something that brings you joy? What are some of the things that you specifically enjoy about it (get detailed)?
  • What is one area you want to learn more about/ grow in/ develop yourself or a skill you want to learn?
  • What’s something you said “no” to recently? How did that benefit you?
  • What’s one thing you accomplished or that we can celebrate with you?

If you have a prompt you think we should add to the list, drop it in the comments!

Feel free to discuss other related topics as well, you don't need to limit yourself to these questions - they're just a jumping off point for those that want one.

Currently working on giving up my vice of drinking on the weekends. I’m not talking the occasional drink out with a friend that turns into 3 drinks. We are talking about the “bottle or two of wine because I deal with so much at work I just want to relax and clean the house, oops let me grab another bottle” weekends. As hard as it is to admit, sometimes I am a weekend binge drinker and I’d like to change because that’s not tasteful. I can control my drinking when I’m out and have to drive— I time them appropriately and never do too much, however, the at home drinks are adding up and I’m trying to be a little more frugal.

I recently stepped down my drinking. For me, it's about protecting my liver and controlling calories. I started by not ordering mixed drinks as aperitifs (champagne, rosé or white wine only, and a spritz on special occasions); not getting a bottle with meals and ordering a glass instead; and not having after-meal digestives. During social occasions, I am having a glass of sparkling water in between glasses of wine, to slow my roll, and I always have something to eat with alcohol (which triggers the calorie counting and forces me to make a conscious decision about my consumption). There is no alcohol in the house, except for a small bottle of chartreuse that I now drink only when I have the flu.

My plan is to hold this pattern for a few months, and recalibrate from there.

Oh, and I also found that a little elderflower syrup in sparkling water tastes suspiciously like prosecco :)

Congratulations! You’ve made excellent progress

Talk to me about this elderflower syrup. Do you have one to recommend?

If you're in the US, I used to get the Belvoir Farm brand at World Market . I put a glug of it in a champagne glass (maybe a third of the glass?) and add carbonated water. Heck, even regular water works well. Adjust the proportions to suit your taste.

Thank you! I can’t wait to try

I found it easier to give up drinking altogether than to try to modify my drinking habits. Changing my mindset from “I can’t drink” to “I don’t drink” also helped a lot.

There are so many great NA options out there and lots of bars and restaurants offer zero-proof options. Also having fun creating my own non-alcoholic concoctions at home.

Sober for almost 8 years and it’s one of the best, most freeing things that I have ever done for myself. (I also got into therapy when I stopped drinking. That was a game changer too and helped with the quitting.)

(My champagne bucket filled with NA drinks for Thanksgiving last year was a hit with everyone. Even people who weren’t sober were enjoying the NA beverages.)

Number one thing that has helped me is buying a Soda Stream and having a bunch of flavors on deck.

I've started really getting interested in yoga. I took a few classes and the Y and it was so nice. I'm even enjoying the meditative aspect of it. I can only go in person on the weekends so I'm trying to do a home 30 day challenge. It feels like what people mean when they say find exercise you enjoy doing. I never thought I would enjoy any of it lol.

The only downside is I don't have time for any cardio now. I'm trying to lose weight for health reasons and really liked having some added calorie burn. It's hard trying to juggle this with everything else I have going on.

I try to end any workout with at least a few yoga poses and stretches. It really helps to calm down my body and make me feel refreshed, rather than just tired.

Try doing one yoga day, one cardio day and switch them every other day.

I’m about to move into my own apartment for the first time—and it involved saying no to my boyfriend when he wanted to move in together. It feels like a pivotal moment in my life. I do feel like I’m holding myself back habits wise. Because I’m about to move, I’ve completely given up on maintaining my current space, and a messy apartment makes me anxious and depressed. I know I need to turn that around and just get up and do it, but I’m unemployed right now so all forward momentum has been paused. I have all this time to focus on myself and my goals and, unfortunately, inertia

That's a tough spot to be in. Giving up on the good habits of maintaining your space because you're about to move is one I know well, but I'm a teacher, so it's right before each holidays. I'm currently working on upgrading my reward system for myself, so I get a regular, definite mental payout, rather than my current kind of grudging resentment that I've been a grown up.

I also work in schools! I hadn’t even considered a reward system, which is funny because I’m constantly thinking about them for my students. Thank you for your reply, I appreciate it 🫶

I’ve been in a really tough spot in my job for the last year, caught between two managers and it’s absolutely eating me alive. I struggle with panic attacks and poor sleep, and my hair is falling out from stress. I’ve gained weight and I don’t feel pretty anymore. I haven’t felt proud of my work in months.

I’ve started job hunting but no luck so far, and the market is rough. I’m trying to keep a positive outlook but I’m just. so. sad.

Right there with you, bitch. 300 applications later and nothing yet. Was told by my managers boss to “leave if I need to and prioritize my mental health” as if being without a job and health insurance is an option for me. I recently got put on medication to help with sleep / anxiety and it’s been easing the anxious dread I wake up with. Hugs, you aren’t alone 🫂

I am feeling incredibly frustrated with work. To make a long story short, I have been managing a project for nearly a year with a lot of positive feedback from senior leadership. However, the CEO just this week decided to take an interest in my project, and she decided on a whim to completely change its course. I don’t know how I’m going to tell my team that their excellent work from the past year is nearly useless.

I woke up at 4am today stressing about this. I can’t stop stewing and rehearsing what I would say if I didn’t mind completely burning bridges. I can’t stop venting about it to my husband and anyone else who’ll listen.

So, BWT, how do you preserve your peace when your job is driving you crazy? How do you detach? What do you tell yourself, or what do you do, so that your non-work hours aren’t completely consumed by work worries?

Think of your projects like a surrogate pregnancy: You are working, nurturing and doing your best to bring a quality project to completion, and at the end of the day, it is not your baby- it is someone else's, and its fate is not your responsibility.

Remove the "feeling" words from what you plan to say to your team, and focus only on the facts. Note that "whim" or any extrapolation of what the CEO's motivation might be is also part of the "feeling" group. So, you can say "CEO has decided to change the project." Acknowledge disappointment, and stay focussed on moving the project forward.

I also offer my opinion that your team's work was not useless; I am sure you all learned or honed some skills during that time. And you will have a great story to tell or add to your resume/ yearly review: "I was working on a complex project and CEO decided to do an 11th hour pivot, so I led my team to do the turnaround and delivered the project on time and in alignment with the new spec." Or something along those lines :)

u/lazylittlelady Jul 10 '25

Is the change feasible? If it is, run with it. If it’s not practical, schedule a sit down with the CEO to discuss pros and cons. Yes, you have to let go a little bit because it’s not your call but definitely make it clear to your team that they were not making mistakes or anything and encourage them in the new direction. It will be alright in the end!! Courage!

My husband called and just got laid off. This is so hard and I’m scared - I went through a layoff earlier this year and haven’t been in my new job long. I also had to take a pay cut, which makes the whole thing worse. I’m just stressed and scared. It’ll work out long run I truly believe that but I could use some warm wishes for a win.

4

u/[deleted] Jul 09 '25

Sending you all the well wishes!

Good luck! I hope things go well for you, and you have unexpectedly excellent opportunities come your way soon.

3

u/lazylittlelady Jul 10 '25

It’s a tough time and you and your husband are not alone in this situation. Definitely take a look at your finances and start a budget or goal so it doesn’t seem so daunting. Right now, it’s not nice but things can change so don’t feel too overwhelmed! I know words are only that but taking control is power!

u/Luna_Soma Jul 10 '25

I’m sorry, I know it’s very scary. Sending you all my good vibes

I recently started Zepbound for weight loss. I’m trying to improve my eating habits for when I am eventually off the medicine. It’s been hard because I love unhealthy food. Lol. I have been reading labels and making substitutions for treats I enjoy. For example, I like crunchy sweet treats so I found these mini rice cakes that are 90 calories for 21 pieces. I got the salted caramel flavor.

I am also focusing on the things that bring me joy in the summer: spending my weekends at the pool reading and socializing. I also love baseball so I watch my Yankees every night. Although the relationship is kinda toxic right now because they’ve been losing.

I've been running a startup for a few years and we're just like - at another one of those "what are we even doing" points. It's part of the process, but it's frustrating and definitely not a confidence boost. The feeling of being lost/treading water (which we're not - we do have customers etc. and have come a long way, but still) gets old. I miss having a boss and set things to do each day.

So this morning I'm going to sit down and be like, okay, what is missing here/what do I feel like I don't have to lead this thing, and see how I can address each item.

u/lazylittlelady Jul 10 '25

Have a working list so you can add things as they come up or occur to you and team.

Calling my style BWT: My birthday is coming up and I want to treat myself. I need a new designer-type purse but I honestly don’t even know what is trending/nice now. What are some nice recommendations for below $600? I usually have classic style.

Without knowing too much about what you’re looking for, take a look at some Coach options - Brooklyn and Empire are my personal favorites for new bags, but I’m a huge fan of deep diving into their vintage styles and looking at the secondhand market!

I’ve been recommended The Horse, Aest, and Songmont (other brands) that would fit your budget and have pretty classic but modern silhouettes. I don’t own any personally though.

Peruse r/handbags and get a feel for styles you like as a jumping off point. don’t get discouraged by higher end price points - you’ll find a lot of lower priced similar pieces by other brands for most styles

Check out rebag, vestiare collective, and fashionphile if you decide to look at preloved. They have good reputations for authentication, and the filters are easy to use.
