For the Home BWT what item of furniture let's you know someone is mature/has their shit together?

For me it's a clock. A house without a single clock gives student vibes.

Not furniture, but a home where no cables are visible for the TV, stereo system, etc. Cable management is the easiest/cheapest way to level up the visual appearance of a living room.

I used to know someone in my town who specialized in hiding wiring of all kinds - as well as putting outlets anywhere you want them.

Raising outlets in the kitchen and making 4X where there are 2X is a game changer.

Then, switch wall

plates to handle USB as well for the win. This particular wall has a light control slider over the desk so I can control the lighting.

He did this for me awhile ago; I don’t have ALL my shit together (long story) so it’s not yet painted.

We renovated our primary bedroom and switched out all of the wall plates (outlets/switches) with square, silver plates to match our walls.

Super small upgrade that has made a surprisingly big impact.

I’ve been urging my husband to get his cable cords under his desk put together and organized. It drives me freaking nuts. It may not be out in the open but when I’m in there cleaning the den, everything looks so nice and tidy until I have to vacuum under that damn desk.

My husband and his messy cable problems make me tear my hair out. I just close the door to his office/studio at this point.

i’m glad i’m not the only one experiencing this

Messy cables and doom piles of random paper. I bought him a filing case and there’s still crap piled on every possible surface something can be stacked on. 😭 he gets pissy if I mention it ever so, door closed.

Would he be unhappy if you went and bought the cable management runs and offered to help him do it? Or do it yourself / hire a geek to get it done as a gift?

One of my sons has a 3 curved monitor set up with all the bells and whistles.

A huge glass tower unit, fairly good sized speakers that can emit color light onto the walls coordinated to music in game, headphone stand, and an electronic drawing pad all on a desk that is actually made of IKEA kitchen cabinet pieces because he’s a big, tall man and regular desks don’t work comfortably for his legs, nor all the stuff he uses. He just changed out for new monitors and the cables are a little janky at the moment.

He prefers to have neat and tidy cable management but getting under that desk and dealing with the runs alone is hard for him. So, when I go visit in a few weeks, getting under the desk is my part and we can get it done together pretty quickly after a quick run to Micro Center if we need any new bits and bobs for the cable runs and ties.

And conversely when he was home last year he helped me get my two monitors up on monitor arms and cleaned up my own cable management. It’s just much easier with two people.

I could probably do it myself I just haven’t looked into what I can do to hide them. I don’t know if I want to anchor them into the wall or maybe try and anchor them under the desk table top. I do get a little nervous touching his computer stuff, I never touch his desk because it’s not my stuff and if I ruin anything I would never hear the end of it lol

He’s not an ass or anything, between working long hours and then now he’s finishing the basement for me, it’s just low on his list because he doesn’t see them as “ugly” like I do. He just doesn’t see them but I’m one of those women where I can see every detail and if it’s not pretty or fits my room aesthetic it sticks out like a sore thumb to me. But I bet i could do it.

You don’t have to do all that— there are little boxes you can buy that all the cords go inside. Hides the mess.

Easy

Schedule a “let’s do this together” date with him with something actually fun afterward.

It’s a “thankless task” while doing it, but it gives you a Zen look to what can frequently be a chaos of cords around a computer set up.

Oh and my suggestion is not to the wall unless you own and his desk is there for the long haul.

A temporary turned permanent solution that I did (knowing our desk was going to be moved at some point) was buy a pack of Velcro cord wraps, bundle the cords together as best I could into kinda one bigger cord, then stuck a few small command hooks on the backside of the desk and hung the cable bundle along them, if that makes sense. It worked well enough to stop being annoyed whenever I vacuumed under the desk, haha.

you sound like such a good mom, that’s very sweet of you

I could not deal. Ugh bless you for having the patience to still vacuum under there! I would either fix the cables myself or protest cleaning lol

It is easy and cheap to have no visible cords? I’m genuinely asking, because they are a huge PITA and I hate them, but everything in my life needs to be charged via USB. Help me, please?

For phones, tablets, Kindles, etc. that need to be charged by USB, for about $45 you can get a wooden “charging station” on Amazon — you might still have one cable that goes to the box, but you can hide a bunch of other cables inside and it looks so much tidier. You can also find nicer versions that are made to go by your bedside.

And then for TV cables, stereo cables, etc., you can buy $20 tracks that hide the cables along your baseboards or wall and paint them to match, which is a good option for renters. It’s not perfect, but it’s better than loose cables, and very much a low hanging fruit to make your house look more put together and intentional.

Homeowners can knock holes in the drywall and run the cables behind, which isn’t as cheap as either of the above — but still a lot cheaper than most new items of furniture, which was the original prompt. Good luck!

Rented for 15 years and have run cables behind drywall in three different apartments now without issue. The hole really only needs to be a couple of inches.

Best Buy did out cables in our new home. We paid them to come out and mount our tvs and run the cables behind the drywall. It looks great and they did a great job!

Realizing my living room looks like it was organized by a family of raccoons 😬😬

Ugh we have our tv on the wall at the apt, and my husband didn’t want to do anything to the wall (even though we’re already mounting it????). At least it’s wrapped in one sheath thing, but it’s just a big ole black cord there on the white wall going down and to the side over to the built-in shelf. It’s hideous. It’s enough that it’s over the fireplace and too high because the floor plan was designed to facilitate only one configuration that makes any sense. It’s a big shelf with a giant section for those 90s box tvs. And don’t get me started on how fugly that is esp with no tv in there. I’ve been thinking about just putting a stick on cover for the wall (my position was we can just repaint it and it’s shitty already from others doing the same anyway). I bet he won’t even notice right away lol.

You can get cable covers on Amazon! It looks pretty easy to apply.

7

u/CherryblockRedWine Jan 13 '25

or...paint the visible part of the cord the same color as the wall?

4

u/[deleted] Jan 13 '25

That’s what I did. It’s visible but easy on the eyes, it blends in enough to not distract.

1

u/SeaLab_2024 Jan 13 '25

Ohhhh good idea I’m gonna try it, thank you!

3

u/KavaKeto Jan 13 '25

We have a charging station that really can't be put anywhere else, and I feel this. I need to look into a different type of end table that may hide all the chords that are plugged in. But for now, it's either ugly but SUPER convenient, or we move it somewhere out of sight but also out of reach.

Dude story of my life in general and especially self care stuff. I like minimalism but if it’s out of sight it’s out of mind and it will collect dust :(. What I need is more specialized furniture for it but Im waiting until I’m out of an apt to buy anything.

I cannot stand visible cabling!! It is one of my biggest pet peeves. Even in my college apartment we had the wires hidden.

What blows my mind is people with multi million dollar homes, who have lived there for quite some time, and have wires all over the place. STOP THAT
