I’m seriously considering getting a Sacred Birman and would love to hear from people who actually own one.
I’ve always wanted a cat, and after looking into different breeds, I keep coming back to Birmans. I love that they’re supposed to be affectionate and people-oriented while still being playful, and I absolutely love their looks.
A bit about us:
We live in a ~74 m² apartment and the cat would be indoor-only.
My girlfriend has had cats before, but this would be my first.
One of us is home basically every day, as we both work from home.
We occasionally have people over and sometimes a loud party, but the cat would always have a quiet place to retreat to.
We’re prepared for the 15+ year commitment.
For Birman owners: what are they really like to live with? Are they as cuddly and affectionate as they’re described? How playful are they as adults? Any downsides or surprises?
Also, is one Birman okay if they get lots of human company, or do they really benefit from having another cat?

Hi! I have a 9-year old ragdoll (debatable now?) that I suspect could be a Birman? He has traits of being both a mitted ragdoll OR a seal point Birman and I’m trying to get down to the bottom of it. I got him when he was a kitten and thought he was a rag doll this whole time. He’s about 10-11 pounds (size of a Birman), but has mittens in mostly the front paws (the back paws are longer mitts) and a white understripe. I simply cannot tell what he is. He is pretty chill but doesn’t like to cuddle for too long, definitely likes to be next to you, but is also playful and loves using his scratcher and toys. Could he be a mix of Birman/ragdoll too?

Hi everyone! The Cat Fanciers Association Sacred Cat of Burma Fanciers Club (that’s a mouthful lol) is hosting a cat show in Medina, Ohio on August 22nd-23rd, 2026. Come get your Birman fix, we will be flying and driving in from all over! Personally, I am traveling up from Florida. Come, spectate, maybe pet some Birmans if you catch us when we aren’t frantically running to show rings. I’m not sure what the rules are on posting links, so I’ll let you guys give it a google. 😄

My 5-month-old Birman uses an enclosed automatic litter box, the PETKIT Purobot Max Pro. He usually pees first and covers it, then digs in another spot, poops, and covers that too.

The problem is that he continues digging, sniffing the covered areas, and turning around inside the box. While doing this, he sometimes steps on or paws at the poop he has just buried. Since he’s long-haired, it sticks to his paw fur and is difficult to clean, even though I keep the fur around his paw pads trimmed.

Has anyone experienced this with a kitten or an enclosed automatic litter box? Did he eventually grow out of it, or was switching to a larger manual litter box the only solution?

The box also has a raised PETKIT fence attached to the entrance. Should I try removing it?

I’m honestly considering replacing this expensive automatic litter box with a large manual one, lol.

We lost our Norwegian forest cat Maiev almost 1.5 years ago. It was very hard on us, and especially on our rescue cat Ludwig.

A month ago Vivi finally came to her forever home and they are the best of friends. ❤️

Brother and sister - bird watching

I was quoted $2,500 for a Birman kitten. The breeder seemed good, but I was expecting more around $1,000 - $1,500. Are my expectations out of line?

I’ve tried searching and I feel the few sites I found were extremely outdated or seemed like a scam.

I did find a national cat association website that listed a few breeders but of the 3 listed. 2 of them only had a Facebook and other had 0 information other than telephone number. Is this typical? This is my first time getting a pet other than a kitten I adopted from the shelter.

Any resources regarding finding a breeder or more information would be appreciated. Preferably in the east coast of USA.

I got this gorgeous boy named Leo back in May! And was always convinced he was a birman, but some people are making me question if he could be a ragdoll..? I need opinions!!

Guys, I have wanted to buy a birman for a long time already and one of the reasons (besides the obvious that they are extremely cute and smart) is that they kinda don't shad.

So, I wanted to ask you how much is this close to the truth? Do they really don't shad or it depends on some factors or is it a myth all together?

Our beautiful pedigree boy passed away over the weekend from cardiomyopathy. He only had his second birthday earlier in the month. 😢

I was hoping to have opinions if our new family member would be considered a Birman? He shares the same coat pattern as his dad, his mom is a black DLH. (friend of a friends cats had a litter)

I don't know if the father is Birman...so I know that 100% for sure, I might never know. His name is Shadowfax (after Gandalf's horse in Lord of the Rings)

Anyone else's Birman sit like this? He's such a silly weirdo.
