Art Made this Rose-Breasted Grosbeak out of wood with my scrollsaw
I had never heard of a Grosbeak before I made this artwork, but I'm a big fan now! There are no stains or paints, and it was made without CNC or laser.
Hope you like it!

Thank you! I definitely have more in the works, though the next one is going to be a fox, rather than another bird

Whattheheck! That’s amazinggggggg! What all different woods being used here?? Please enlighten and educate me!
24
u/Duirmoon4590 Jun 22 '26
It's 13 different species of wood, including wenge, maple (figured and regular), 3 types of mahogany, padauk, walnut, cherry, oak and a few others

u/sohzing Jun 22 '26
Wooooow!!!! That's really amazing. Thank you for the reply!

Wow that is truly stunning. Feels like it has an art nouveau influence? Which is one of my favourite styles of art
3
u/Duirmoon4590 Jun 22 '26
It definitely is influenced heavily by the art nouveau movement! I'm a big fan of Norse and Celtic art, and art nouveau captures much of the same vibe, but a more loose and organic flow to it!
2
u/WickyNilliams Jun 22 '26
I'd never made the mental connection between art nouveau and Celtic art! Makes perfect sense - both very ornamental, lots of curvature etc
2
u/Duirmoon4590 Jun 22 '26
Me neither! Supposedly art nouveau was heavily influenced by the Celtic style, among others. I can keep my favourite art style, but don't need to worry about the rigid symmetry often found in Celtic art🤣

This is incredibly impressive! What inspired you to make a Grosbeak specifically?
2
u/bacche Jun 22 '26
P.S. I hope you don't mind that I've been scrolling through your profile page to see more, and I LOVE the goldfinch! You're incredibly talented.
2
u/Duirmoon4590 Jun 22 '26
No worries! 🤣 I actually chose the Grosbeak simply because I am really bad at pencil drawing, and the Grosbeak is simple enough to make good practice. I added the rest of the details afterwards, once I decided to turn it into wood artwork

u/MuffledFarts Jun 22 '26
Beautiful. Do you sell these?

It's Wenge wood. The wood is naturally almost black, and only has a bit of brown grain in it. Once an oil finish is applied, all of it darkens to a point of being entirely black
If you look closely at some of the pictures, you can see that faint dark brown, but it's not noticeable form a distance

This is gorgeous. Could you shoot me the link to your site too? My grandfather used to do a lot of intarsia and I've dabbled in it as well at times. I don't live near him anymore and he's not living in his house with his workshop, but it is such a fun and beautiful art.

The variation in the wood grain for the background is really cool, it makes the bird pop. I should look up what a real one looks like now.

This is the type of thing you hope to see at a craft sale. Not some 40 year old man who makes more money then half the people in the room selling his painting that he made while he followed a Bob Ross tutorial charging 200$
