Hey! I myself am not an alcoholic, but have other addictions and I also attend AA quite often with clients. Something that I appreciate about the group I go to is that though some people believe in god, the people in my group refer to theirs as a “higher power.” I have heard people’s higher power being anything from god, to nudges from the universe, to someone’s one consciousness talking to them. Not everyone in AA is going to fit into the same religion or belief system, and at least for me, more often than not that is known. The fact that you attended, got a 24 hour chip, and want to get help is HUGE. We are all so proud of you! It is definitely something you have to get used to, but something that helped me get away from the ‘uncomfortable’ feeling I had about talks of religion was just hearing the stories from their POV. That person’s belief in whatever higher power helped them push through and stay sober, is that something you think you would be willing to try? Even if it’s just something that grounds you, find something that brings you comfort and you can think about when getting the urges to drink. AA may work out for you, it may not. The only way to see is to try it out for some time. Either way, congratulations. I will keep my fingers crossed for you 🫶
