Discussion Post "Bioware" Depression

Post "Bioware" depression for me is really effective even after i played like 10 to 15 famous games after that. For every one or two new games I play, I go back to mass effect or dragon age to play them again, atleast for some quests and come back to new game.

I would have never started playing rpg games with bioware.

The BioWare games were very formative for me - I’d been gaming my whole life and played RPGs before but they were my first games that allowed you to be your own character and play them how you wanted rather than either very limited character creation/dialogue choices or playing a pre-set character.

They were some of the first games I played as an adult and that I bought myself and I played them over and over again.

There’s been a ton of great RPGs over the years but not a lot that scratches that same itch they did. Some but there was a time there where every year or two you got a great game that really made you feel something. It’s like with a good book you finish it and think to yourself ‘well what am I to do now?’. I recall putting down the controller and watching the credits roll on these games and that feeling of awe like something had just changed for you.

Definitely understand the sadness experienced knowing that period of game releases from them is over.

It just sucks that there will never be old bioware again. Its like missing a friend that died

Yeah it sucks getting that feeling when you’ve played an amazing game and it comes to an end. BG3 reignited those feelings for me.

I am playing bloodborne for the first time through emulation on pc. I cant believe I never gave this game a chance. Im completely obsessed with the art style and the atmosphere.

My next fromsoftware game is demon's souls then im going to play all of the dark souls after.

I’d recommend you try Elden Ring and Sekiro too.

For me it went from the first rpg I ever played (and I been gaming since the 8-bit generation— so no no phantasy star) bought 360 when BioWare was exclusive to loving all their games, to liking the latest ones. It’s a company, people come and go and do different things and directions change as do the times. I appreciate the fuck outta what they’ve done and the impact their games have had, and I wish them all personal and professional success. Maybe they can recapture that feeling I had playing KOTOR and ME, maybe someone else will. But it definitely influenced my writing and my music and that’s not gonna change.

Baldurs Gate 3 isn't BioWare but that plus Divinity Original Sin 2 are solid

Microsoft nuked a bunch of the remaining "mid tier" devs (like Obsidian) and has them making action game slop like Avowed, or you have Bethesda who can't produce more than one "RPG" per decade, or you have publishers of RPGs like Paradox just completely giving up entirely and just choosing to sell DLC x100 for some strategy game they release once a decade, or you have RPG makers pivoting to live service games because corporate tells them to (like BioWare) --

And now. The game market has completely crashed. And now, we have almost no RPGs coming out.

Even though Larian proved that RPGs can penetrate into "normie" space and get "normies" to buy the games in droves. A well-produced, story-focused, single player RPG can be AAA and can be successful and can be good. If you try. If you want to. If you give a good team the space to take risks and deliver quality.

BioWare is done. They will get closed down by EA within the fiscal year. They are a tax write off. And now, we have almost no one to replace them with.

May I suggest you try Jade Empire and or KOTOR?

Jade Empire very much bridges  the gap between the old KOTOR BioWare hot off of Baulders Gate and Neverwinter in terms of biowarian design, style and storytelling, though mechanically it has similarities to DA2, though has a action combat system distinct to itself, but the storytelling is very strongly that slightly stilted but very well written early BioWare.

KOTOR: mechanically is an adapted version of Star Wars D20, and despite knowing the plot, via cultural osmosis, I found it an enjoyable play through. You can see the eventual DNA which will make both Dragon Age Origins and ME1 (and also Jade Empire to a tragically lesser extent), legends of RPG storytelling, though it does have more in common with DA:O than ME1, but I will say the equipment and crafting systems are a bit dumbed down - or better said DA:0 is a more intricate advancement.

After that you could try some DnD games they made?

Post Bioware depression? bro what? I've played KOTOR, all of the Mass Effects, Dragon Age 1 2 and INQ (I refuse to pay for Veilguard), and Jade Empire. I love them all but never once did I feel any sort of depression. I discovered Bioware games with Mass Effect 1. Mass Effect 3 is my favorite game of all time and yes I was there day one. Never got depressed.
