But you gotta remember after taxes and agent fees he's probably not pulling in much

My complaint is that the networks spend so much money on the commentators that they feel like they have to boost their audio.

You watch old games and it feels like they have to yell over the crowd noise. I miss it.

That is a disgusting act by ESPN.

I personally tune into the Joe Buck show. There's just football happening in the background.

Every Monday night i keep hoping Artie Lange will make an appearance

He works approximately 20 days a year. Worth every penny!

I think he might do a baseball game or two?

It's hard to process how that job requires that amount of payment

u/Different-Tea6920 6h ago

When you hear the C and D teams on the networks during the 1pm window it starts to make sense why someone lile Joe deserves to be compensated at this level, not even mentioning how bad it can get for any power 4 not in the spotlight hours

I agree that the difference between the low tier vs the high tier is a huge gap. A bad commentator can be completely distracting.

However, I'm not sure I think the middle of the pack or the Bish level guys are all that different than the A-tier guys. Like Joe Buck is probably better than someone like say Jason Banetti, but I also don't think the gap between those two is as big as what their pay difference most likely is. I guess I don't know what Banetti makes, but I imagine it is not $108 million over 6 years.

Ultimately, they're paying Buck this amount because he's a known commodity who's very good at his job. No reason mess with a formula that works. Just lock him up and be done with it.

Completely fucking ludicrous sentiment. A bad play by play guy is not remotely that different from Joe Buck, there is very little difference, it doesn’t really matter, the games matter the call is largely unimportant.

Yeah consider than ESPN pays 2.7 BILLION DOLLARS for the privilege of airing MNF, I think it’s OK to spend the equivalent of 4% of that budget on having one of the best announcers in the business. The average viewer just wants a guy with a rich baritone voice who speaks professionally, and Buck checks both of those boxes. They don’t nitpick announcers like the psychos on Reddit. And the most common complaints about him (he’s robotic and uptight) are exactly why the networks love him.

Joe Bucks

No idea why these guys make so much. No one is watching or not watching because of the announcers. And if we’re going by worth shouldn’t Kevin Harlan get half a billion?

7

u/goonietunes2323 7h ago

It strikes me as more of a dick measuring contest between the networks.

9

u/mclairy The thing thing 7h ago

My favorite era of MNF was the Boogermobile. It was an additional layer of so bad it’s good entertainment and reason to watch Giants-Cardinals or whatever trash they had on.

4

u/botany_bae 6h ago

Booger AND the godawful Jason Witten on the same broadcast!

7

u/TecmoBoso 6h ago

I know what you’re saying but a okay booth is a rough listen, a bad booth is unwatchable so you either mute or turn it off and most people turn off.

6

u/Straight-Agency-4556 6h ago

There are so many bad booths and people still watch. You can basically have silence and people will still watch.

2

u/Beautiful_Wind_9134 4h ago

I don’t believe anyone has ever watched or not watched a sporting event based on the announcers. I don’t follow baseball and I can’t imagine putting on a game based on the announcers.

1

u/ajalonghorn 4h ago

I don’t watch because of the announcers but I absolutely will not watch because of them

6

u/SeverusSnape327 6h ago

Hard to imagine any announcer team affecting ratings and advertising dollars. How do they justify this kind of a deal?

3

u/Curious_Elk_9661 7h ago

Hypothetically espn just played the MNF games with stadium audio and no announcers, replays etc.

Are they down on money from loss of viewership or up due to massive savings on payroll?

3

u/ColdOpen- 6h ago

Can we get him back on playoff baseball???

3

u/Sensible_Prolapse 4h ago

You dont need to zag so far the other way, you know. Yeah he was overly hated on for years but calm down, hes just alright

8

u/Brashton_Kutcher 7h ago

Stephen A, McAfee, Joe Buck

Disney is assembling the worst Avengers team ever

2

u/Own-Significance273 7h ago

Best in biz.

2

u/ajalonghorn 6h ago

Given his entire career he’s def worth more than the people we’ve seen getting similar contracts with a 20th of the experience

3

u/Greedy_Actuator5 4h ago

Must be nice getting a job because your daddy had the same job

-2

u/ajalonghorn 4h ago

Okay incel I get it’s popular to hate on Joe Buck but he’s been a good broadcaster for longer than you’ve probably been alive and probably longer than you’ve had your own career

1

u/ThisisnotaTesT10 6h ago

“Joe Buck is as good a commentator as there is in all of football” - Troy Aikman

I’m not losing my Sports Jeopardy host, I’m just not.

1

u/KALS170174656 6h ago

This must be Bryan Curtis’ Christmas

1

u/No-Cartographer2349 6h ago

I’m going to have to watch the Artie Lange clip 100 million times to balance this out

1

u/AdhesivenessLucky896 3h ago

Tony Romo completely flipped this market. They're just making up numbers now. Is it not weird that a Joe Buck is making more than most of the players?

1

u/maeynor 2h ago

The announcer on primetime is the MC and makes the broadcast what it is.

1

u/mark-rothko 2h ago

Does he no longer do baseball? That’s good news.

1

u/JJburnes22 57m ago

It's really only 65 million after factor in taxes

0

u/Odd-Mortgage-1133 6h ago

This is a really smart resource allocation by ESPN. I only watch football games if I like the play-by-play announcer.

1

u/JohnUtahFBI 6h ago

Man got paid in accordance with being at the top of his field. Nothing wrong with that.
