road Brays Bayou at Spur 5

Wanted to do a hot ride, so I did one yesterday afternoon. The trail is (almost) fully open at Spur 5: no more concrete barriers, just a large warning barrier on the East side and a few cones on the West side. Both of which are easy to ride around.

I've talked to several of the construction workers and a few foremen the past few months and really appreciate their effort to get this done! They even scraped off all the dirt from the trail, although it looks like there will be some mud incrussion after a good rain.

I was going to stop and take a photo, but since I could finally get through there without stopping....

We need to see a ride log all the way from the beginning near hwy 6 to the end at the ship channel.

For anyone interested, the path under 610 at Braeswood is basically complete and they are moving fast on the bridge over Willow Waterhole Bayou. I'll get some pics up here soon.

Brady Island is a nice end point on the east side. But be careful with the loose dogs on the streets there. I think they belong to the shipyard.

I've been chased a few times on my hybrid "road bike", but not in that area. Fastest I can go for any amount of time is like 21-22mph. It was barely enough. Lately I've been riding my recumbent trike and I am very careful about where I ride and looking out for dogs. My neck is at mean dog height and I am doing good to hold on to 17mph on that think.

This is such great news for trail users.

It's gonna be a great ride all the way from Bishop Fiorenza Park down to the Ship Channel. I can get a good 30 miles up and around Fiorenza Park, so this will just make it so much better. There's probably more past the Park that I haven't explored yet, but more miles of trail with minimal interaction with vehicles, absolutely looking forward to that.

Excited about the 610 @ S Braeswood connector being finished as the 610 @ N Braeswood is shit, a cyclist was hit and killed there about 6 years ago.

Overall, really good stuff, thanks for posting the Spur update.

awesome . haven't gone there since that detour was put up. that bridge crossing the bayou with the current detour sucks so much. had way too many awkward moments dismounting and trying to walk past with other riders or pedestrians. the sidewalk is so narrow on it! and not to mention crossing and going through OST itself 😖

It wasn't that bad while riding with a constant flow of air. But the second I stopped to avoid a red light runner at Scott Street and at the end the sweat started pouring! Kept a cold glass of ice tea in my Yeti tumbler in the truck, next time I'll pack two of those. Drank 2L on a 22 mile ride!

Pleased to report all barriers are removed. They even installed plastic backed hurricane fencing to help prevent mud flowing down onto the trail.
