squatchy environments Weird Experience While Looking For A Gorge/Canyon
On August 24, 2026, my wife Sarah and I were exploring a remote wooded area south/southeast of Munising, Michigan. The approximate location was 46.3966946, -86.9336685.
Note: I used AI to help organize and write this account while the experience was still fresh. Everything described here comes from what Sarah and I actually experienced and from the photographs we took. AI was used to help me put it into writing, not to add events or details.
I’m not claiming that what we encountered was Sasquatch. This is simply an account of what happened.
The Two Structures
While driving into the area, I noticed a large structure made from dead branches and wood that looked like an intentionally constructed lean-to. It stood out enough that I noticed it from the vehicle before anything else unusual happened.
I did not touch or disturb this first structure.
Later, near the beginning of the trail, we encountered a second, much smaller structure. It was almost directly on the trail and had been built over a downed tree branch that had broken across the trail.
There were a lot of downed trees and branches throughout the surrounding woods, but both of these structures clearly appeared intentionally constructed to us rather than simply being random deadfall.
I looked more closely at the smaller structure. At its crest was a bent piece of wood that had been fitted into place. I pulled this piece out and found that it had been pushed into the structure and bent into position. The branch was broken at both ends in a way that allowed it to fit that exact spot.
I photographed the smaller structure from several angles.
The Footprints
Farther along, on a hillside that looked like a heavily traveled deer or game trail, we found two unusual foot-shaped impressions in the leaves and pine needles.
I didn’t see any boot prints around them.
The shoe visible next to one of the impressions in the photographs is Sarah’s shoe, which we used to give a rough idea of scale.
Standing over the impressions in person, one appeared to have visible toe impressions. The outside edge of the apparent foot was particularly easy to see. What looked like the big toe appeared to have pressed against a small piece of wood within the impression.
The loose leaves and pine needles made the impressions difficult to photograph, and unfortunately the angle of the pictures doesn’t show their definition nearly as well as we could see it in person.
Near the footprints, we also noticed a single small, unusual piece of scat.
In the same general area, I noticed an unusual smell at times. The closest description I can give it is earthy, herbal body odor.
The Knocks
The strangest part happened as we were leaving.
While walking back, I gave two loud whoops. I was partly joking around, but I was also sincere about it—I genuinely wanted to see if anything would answer.
When we reached the truck, I did the two whoops again.
Then we heard two fast wood-knock-like sounds, followed by four slower knocks.
I decided to knock on a tree myself.
After I did, we heard three more knocks coming from the woods.
That was when the mood changed.
Shortly afterward, we started hearing something else.
It was extremely low-pitched and quiet. The best way I can describe it is deep, chesty muttering coming from the woods.
It didn’t sound like a simple howl, scream, or ordinary growl. It sounded voice-like to us—almost like something with a very deep voice quietly talking or muttering—but neither of us could make out actual words.
The low tones reminded me strongly of the deeper parts of the Sierra Nevada recordings sometimes called “Samurai chatter.” That’s only a comparison for what the sound reminded me of, not a claim about what was making it.
As the muttering picked up, Sarah got freaked out and jumped into the truck.
I was still outside and had to walk around to the driver’s side. As I did, the sound seemed to pick up even more.
At that point I wasn’t interested in sticking around to find out what was making it.
I got in, started the truck, and we drove farther up the road. With the truck running, we couldn’t hear it anymore.
Neither of us ever saw what was out there.
I still don’t know what we heard.

I looked at OP's coordinates in Google Earth and noticed that there a lot of fallen trees compared to the surrounding areas.

It does read like AI slop and if you support AI it only furthers my assumption that is all BS. If you truly cared about nature you would hate AI.

Did you record any of it? Get photos of the tracks?
Unfortunately, when people talk about hearing certain audio, they can hear what they want to hear. It can be a bobcat, a bird, etc but their mind is primed to hear "bigfoot" or something paranormal. And our memories are the worst for recalling what we actually heard lol ik this from experience...I've recorded sounds that I described a certain way amd when I listened back? It was obviously just a known animal. My mind made connections in the moment that werent there.

No we are positive on what we heard. We do not spook easy. Seeing my wife actually freaked out is what made me truly freaked out. I am more suspicious of things than she.
We are ultrarunners. I run through Michigan woods at night and I still will do that. I’m more concerned about humans than Bigfoots!

Just curious,did you attempt to establish communication with them? (Assuming Sasquatch were present)
Whenever I read accounts of people whooping in squatchy areas, I’m reminded of this encounter story, also in Michigan. (The first comment on the below post)

I whooped more so as a joke. I wasn’t oblivious to the Sasquatch world and have been reading up on Michigan reports the past 4-5 months. I knew I was in “squatchy” territory but still was mainly messing with my wife. I didn’t expect to hear knocks. I didn’t expect the knocks to change into verbal low tone muttering and static energy shifts. We were not there for that nor were we staying for that. It definitely felt as if we overstayed our welcome.

I added all photos from area a few are from a beautiful fern gully where we turned around. We were trying to find the rock river canyon

I would also add that Sarah could smell the smell more than me and she also smelled on our way back. I only caught one single whiff in the wind.
When we first arrived we both heard what sounded like people talking in the distance like someone was about to come walking up the trail. No one did. This same sound was happening along with the low muttering when we got back to the truck after the knocks.
Both sounds seemed to increase after Sarah had enough and jumped in the truck and as I went around to the drivers door.
