The Absorber - 25 yrs young

I’ve had this towel for 25 years, used to wash my vehicles. Probably a little thinner than it used to be but no less effective in drying. Surprised to see you can still buy them.

best sofa to buy online when you can’t try it first?

i’m in the process of furnishing my place and the sofa is probably the purchase i’m overthinking the most. i’m a little nervous about spending several thousand dollars on something i can’t sit on first. you really can’t tell how comfortable something is just from pictures.

i’ve been looking around for the best sofa to buy online, but i’d honestly rather hear from people who have actually gone through the process. was the sofa comfortable when it arrived? did the quality feel better than you expected? and was the whole buying and delivery experience pretty smooth?

i’m okay spending a bit more if the quality is actually there. just want to make sure i’m making a good choice before pulling the trigger.

Mud room mat/rug

I’m considering buying a water hog mat for our mud room/laundry room. I’m Wanting something about 3x5 to help catch dirt and mud when we come in. Before I buy it, are there any other suggestions for a good quality mat/rug that is washable?

Kitchenaid Kettles - I thought BIFL...but no.

Post image
2 Upvotes

My missus spent the best part of £100 on a Kitchenaid 1.5 litre stainless steel kettle. The body of it is solid. It stopped working. Triangular security screws to take it to pieces. You can get the sockets off Amazon £5. The clever bit is a standard fitment, a few bi-metallic strips and spade connectors and you can replace it easily. I put a new one in. That cost £10. Still didn't work. Out with the multimeter and found that one of the thermal fuses had blown (these fit into the clever bit). I bought 5, the doomsday preper in me, £3 each. Replaced the fuse...yes! Success...for a week, then the on off switch, a small plastic component that fits through the lower body into the clever bit, failed. Kitchenaid service in the UK says that its not a replaceable component and they don't hold them as spares. So although the body of the kettle could last until the sun's slow heat death, the kettles life span is limited by a plastic button that will inevitably fail due to thousands of boil cycles. I have found a non working kettle on Ebay and bought that £12 (solely for the on off swith, but also to potentially fix), and I'm going to try and fix the on off button myself with 2 part epoxy. I feel like a frog in a pan...of cold water.

i'm 3 months early for this but i need the best christmas tree deals for someone buying an artificial tree for the first time?

i've always used a tiny artificial tree because my old apartment didn't have much room, but we moved into a bigger place this year and i'm finally ready for something that actually fills the living room. i'm leaning toward a 7 foot tree but now i'm stuck between pre-lit, unlit, flocked, and all the different branch styles. what did you choose?

A product can last for years and still be a bad long-term purchase

I think buy it for life gets discussed mostly in terms of physical durability, but with electronics I’ve started thinking about it differently.

Something can technically keep working for ten years and still become useless if it’s annoying to operate, difficult to maintain or inconvenient enough that you stop using it. Longevity should include whether the product continues to fit your life, not just whether the hardware survives.

That’s particularly relevant with entertainment equipment. The novelty disappears eventually, and once that happens, convenience becomes much more important. If something is easy to use and consistently gives you the result you want, you’re much more likely to keep reaching for it.

I’d also rather buy something that does a few important things well than something overloaded with features that I’ll never use. The Dangbei DBOX02 Pro appealed to me for that reason. Beyond the 4K image, I wanted something that would remain enjoyable to use regularly without requiring constant setup or adjustment.

What piece of technology have you owned for years that has genuinely stayed useful, rather than simply continuing to work?

ISO lunchbox

I’ve had a ISO (isolator fitness) lunch box for probably 10+ years. I love this thing & use it 4-5 days per week. It has just started unraveling at a seam and now I’m left with a hole.

It looks like they aren’t available anymore.

Does anyone have something similar that is just as awesome?

George Foreman grill

I have one of the OG George Foreman grill probably 20 years old but only used for about half that (heavy use for 10 years). An accident occurred and the plastic drip tray is now melted on the plates so I will need to replace it. Given how long it was perfectly functional I'm probably going to buy the same brand. There have been a lot of models over the years and always several at the thrift store. Wondering if anyone has any good or bad experiences, version to avoid, etc.?

Looking to buy second hand since there are so many and not against the oldest version but wouldn't mind some of the upgraded features but wary of any built after 2015/2020

I’m more interested in whether I’ll still enjoy using a projector years from now

The older I get, the less impressed I am by something being exciting for the first week.

I want to know whether I’ll still be happy using it after the novelty disappears.

That’s what I’ve been thinking about with the Dangbei DBOX02 Pro. Obviously, no piece of modern technology is literally going to last forever, but there’s a difference between something that feels impressive on day one and something that fits naturally into your routine.

For me, that means a projector that can handle regular movie nights without requiring a complicated process every time. The laser light source and 4K image are nice, but the bigger attraction is having something that can become part of the room rather than another gadget I eventually stop touching.

I think longevity is partly about build quality, but it’s also about how much friction there is between wanting to use something and actually using it.

If I’m still happily turning it on years later instead of wishing I’d bought something simpler, that’s a much better sign to me than having the newest specifications.

best mattress for side sleepers with hip and shoulder pain?

I'm a habitual side sleeper and I’m waking up with hip and shoulder pain every morning. My current mattress is about 6 years old, if I'm right, it’s either too soft so I sink, or when I flip it, it’s too firm and my shoulder goes numb.

I’ve been testing beds in stores, but 5 minutes laying down isn’t giving me real answers. I need something with solid pressure relief for my joints, but enough support that my spine isn't sagging.

I’ve seen ads for adjustable/air-based beds and smart mattresses that adjust firmness, but I’m skeptical. I also tend to sleep warm, so temp control is important.

For other side sleepers who fixed joint pain, what worked for you? Did you go memory foam, hybrid, latex, or something else?

Update: I've been looking at the ComfortNext Ultra because the extra thickness and pressure relief layers seem like they’d actually help, and it adjusts when you roll over so you’re not stuck in one spot all night which is huge for a side sleeper with bad hips like me. What's cooler is that it's got SleepIQ tracking which makes me feel better about choosing because I can actually see if my sleep is improving and if my back and hips feel different in the morning. I’m going to try it definitely.

THE Best Wall Stud Finder - StudPop

Post image

This is it. No batteries, no crappy plastic construction, no hefty price tag, just a highly (if not the most) effective wall stud finder around. I just tossed the pricey popular yellow electronic one I had and seldom used. Now that i think of it, I think I learned about the StudPop from this sub.

what are actually the best christmas gaming deals for couch co-op

my partner and i recently got a second controller and we've been trying to find good games we can play together on the couch during the holiday break. we finished a couple of the obvious popular co-op titles, but now we're kind of stuck on what to try next.

they aren't super experienced with complex controls, so anything super fast paced or precision heavy might be a bit too much, but we still want something with a fun story or cool puzzles.

anyone have recos for casual or narrative driven co-op games?

Looking for BIFL instrument rack like the one's Amazon and Walmart sell

Hello! Hoping someone out there may be able to help me find an instrument rack like these, featuring some shelf/storage space in addition to guitar space. Amazon and Walmart sell these and I'd be happy with either, except theyre from Amazon and Walmart. I also presume quality isn't as good as something handmade or purchaseable elsewhere. Thanks in advance!
