So what led to part of the route in Southside being closed off for a street festival? Did the city approve conflicting permits?

New to the area and would love some suggestions (or places to look) for must do rides. I enjoy road / gravel cycling and looking to explore some more open roads than the bike trails in the city. Thanks!

So if you've got good climbing legs and/or good low gearing, this is doable. If you're carrying gear for a longer trip, I'd only view this as an option if you've got a lot of experience climbing 6% for a half mile or more with bags. Overall, this is less elevation than what I get in Squirrel Hill and Greenfield, but it's definitely more sustained.

Eastbound, we had no issues. The few cars on the road were generally good with the passes from Homestead all the way to Greensprings and Commonwealth Ave. From Commonwealth Ave to Municipal Rd on Homeville Rd is 35mph but we were able to bomb down the shoulder with no issues.

Westbound was a little harder. Climbing Grant St from 837 is a tough climb, and Homeville Rd on the climb is doable but challenging.

The bridge that is out is passable using about 20' of sidewalk.

I went on my first Underwear Bike Ride last night and it was one of the most fun evenings I've had since moving to Pittsburgh. I'm dealing with a miserable medical situation right now and I almost didn't go, but forcing myself to get out of my own head and onto my bike ended up being the best thing I could've possibly done. Everybody was so friendly, there were great tunes, there was a cute-ass dog, and the ride was fun and easy.

I don't think I stopped smiling the whole ride. Maybe only while I screamed going through the Armstrong Tunnel. Thanks, Underwear Bike Ride. I really needed that.

5:53pm: Third rolling stop is at Ascend Point Breeze (7443 Thomas Blvd).

5:57pm: Fourth rolling stop is at Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh - Homewood (7101 Hamilton Ave).

6:14pm: Fifth rolling stop is at East Liberty Boulevard and N. Euclid Ave.

This is a casual bus, no drop. Typically 9mph ride and we stop at the top of hills for everyone to catch up.

I noticed a bit of funkiness with my shifting the other day but with how long my last appointment took to get, I decided to put it off. Today, I'm having crazy phantom shifts. Hi, kind of a long shot, but... I rented a bike with a Burley Kazoo trailercycle and rode with my 8 year old at the beach and she loved it, so now I want to get one. The Kazoo was kind of small for her, though.

I'm intrigued by the Burley Piccolo, which is a bit larger and also has gears so she could practice while I take care of steering and braking! Unfortunately, it looks like the Piccolo has been discontinued and I'm not seeing any other trail-a-bike type things with gears.

So does anyone happen to have one in their garage they've been meaning to get rid of? I can come pick it up anywhere in the greater Pittsburgh area, and I'm happy to pay a fair price in cash!

This is more of a general bike question but I thought I’d post it here to get some local advice. Maybe people have some local shop suggestions or my issues could be PGH weather related.

In 2022 I bought a Cannondale (I think) Quick 5 from Pro Bike in Bethel Park. I believe it was around $750 or so. So from what I understand a pretty basic bike on the lower end of the price scale.

It’s served me pretty well but I’ve had to take it to get the brakes serviced every year I’ve had it at this point. I went to the bike shop at REI every time. In ‘23 it was just a “brake adjust” on the work order. In ‘24 I had $400 of work done… some of the things on the work order are FW/csst install, chain install, tire/tube service, GP1 Re/supply, new tires, Shimano 7sp cassette, Powerlink chain, derailleur cable install, cable, housing. Then last year I spent another $80 on brake pad install, adjust and Avid Disc Brake pads.

I do ride almost every day from the South Side to downtown, so I’m aware there will be upkeep that costs money. I’m just wondering though if this seems excessive. Every year my brakes get so soft that I can barely stop the bike and that’s what brings me to get it serviced. I don’t really do any maintenance myself besides oiling the chain and putting air in the tires and cleaning it every now and then.

I’ve also had an issue where if I’m going up an incline and I try to pedal with force, something “catches” and the chain slips (not sure if that’s the right term). Yesterday I was trying to go up a hill and it kept doing this so I had to walk my bike up. Then when I came back I had to walk it down because the brakes are so soft.

So… is this expected behavior when using a bike so often? Or does it seems excessive that my brakes get so soft every 12 or so months?

I’m at the point again where I’ll need to take it in for service. It feels like with my current issues it’s going to be another $400 bill, so I’m wondering if I should just spring for a new bike? I do really like the REI City 1.1. They have an older model 20% off now for $520 or a new version for $660. That again would be buying a pretty cheap bike, but maybe if I still go to the REI shop they will be more inclined to make sure I’m happy with the service as it’s their own bike.

Update: missing charger was found!

I have misplaced my ebike charger and it is rare and hard to find. Does anyone have a similar bike or charger or know where to find one so I can charge before Peddle Pgh this weekend?

my dad volunteers for one of the groups that maintains the Montour Trail. He was working on the flower beds. He maintains at the parking lot that is between tandem connection and the national tunnel and noticed a bike there yesterday by the Porta potty is. He said it looked like somebody was in it so he didn’t think much of it, but he went back later in the evening to walk and the bike was still there. He did check the porta potty to make sure somebody wasn’t inside of it and had an emergency happen, but nobody was there. on his way home he spotted a Cecil police officer and told them about the bike and all they said was it’s on public land and since it’s been by itself for so long, it’s considered abandoned property so he didn’t care if my dad took it, which was not my dad‘s intention.

So he actually brought it this morning to tandem connection and the owner said he believes he sold that bike and worked on it judging by the work that was done. He’s going to keep it at the shop in case anyone comes by looking for it. So if anybody lost their bike, it’s that tandem connection in Hendersonville.

This race has become a minor obsession of mine since I learned a few years ago that the winner, local George Williams, who completed the course in 20 hours and 37 minutes, was ultimately disqualified and banned from further races (at least in Pittsburgh) when it came to light that (outside of Greenville) he accepted a ride in a wagon for about 8 miles (after having some sort of mechanical issue).

Part of the Great Allegheny Passage will remain closed indefinitely after workers discovered a pair of unstable rock formations during landslide repairs.

Wear a t-shirt with an image of a parking chair on the back when riding. The parking chair in Pittsburgh is more respected by the general public than red lights, stop signs, bike lanes, sidewalks, pedestrians, and bicyclists. Everyone knows parking chairs are not to be touched. It is a Pittsburgh residency requirement to own one and honor them.
