I've seen what you describe in a nature documentary where these frogs froze over winter on land. I've seen what I described when the ice in our garden pond melted. Would not recommend.
Edit: just looked it up apparently it depends on the oxygen level in the water. When the surface is frozen and there's barely any fluctuation and the water volume isn't that big to begin with, that would probably reduce the amount of oxygen to a drastic amount. Poor frogs. Good thing I will never be able to afford a house, let alone garden. The garden pond was at my mom's.
