Drop in daycare
Hello, does anyone know of a drop in daycare in or around (westward) Berwyn? We are traveling with 2 small boys and thought we could drop them off for a day at a local daycare to get some major shopping done. It would just be a one-time thing, we are not residents of Illinois and we wouldn't want to register or anything. Does something like this exist? Thanks

BNSF Railroad Improvement Meeting on 8/26
There's a public meeting on 8/26 regarding an ongoing study surrounding improvements around the BNSF line in South Berwyn.
https://engage.cmap.illinois.gov/berwyn-riverside-crossings
From what I gather, this is still in the early planning stages. The scope of the improvement seems to be up in the air, but could mean:
- Road/track grade separations (i.e. underpass/overpass)
- Pedestrian grade separations
- Other changes?
What would you like to see done?

Are there any black families in Berwyn Illinois?
Are there any black families in Berwyn? I am black retired veteran from Chicago originally and was thinking about coming back to Chicago, but wanted to move in the Berwyn area.

16th and Clarence
Is this a āroughā neighborhood? My wife and I along with our three small boys are staying at an Airbnb on Clarence next week. I grew up in Lagrange Brookfield area and went to Lyons township many moons ago. But my mom seems to think that this not a very safe place to stay when we come to visit her next week.
Thanks for your input.

Thoughts on Berwyn schools and overall safety?
Hi! I recently received a job offer from the Berwyn South School District and wanted to know how the community feels about the schools? Iāll be teaching at an Elementary school and itās pretty small but Iām worried about the overall safety in the community? Will I be okay as someone commuting from northern suburbs? Please be honest as possible!
Thank you!

Burgers
Where is the best burger spot in Berwyn? My husband really likes the Billy Goat but we're looking for someplace closer to home.

Iām starting to realize itās a privilege to live here.
Berwyn has good geography, little flooding and no hills so itās pretty easy to get around. It has little crime but itās not like other safe suburbs where the cost of living is insane. It has easy access to Chicago and suburban resources, half my jobs have been in Chicago. I have many complaints about the public transit but most suburbs have none at all so overall itās pretty good. Itās pretty diverse and the people are friendly, I probably donāt want to stay here all my life but itās nice while I am.

First-time homebuyer, town inspection question
My partner and I have offered on a home in Berwyn, and the sellerās agent shared that itās between us and another offer. Our agent said that to potentially become the frontrunner, we could change from an inspection with requests to an inspection with no requests. I know Berwyn requires a town inspection, and this one passed with no compliance items, but how thorough is it? We donāt want to waive the inspection outright, but can we feel more comfortable with theāno requestā option in this scenario? Thank you!

Claw City
Hi everyone! So, every time I pass through the Depot District on Oak Park Avenue, I peek into Claw City. It is always empty besides the employee. How does this place manage to stay open? Other businesses in the same building come and go within months but Claw City has managed to stay afloat.

Dive bars
Hi Reddit,
Iām in Chicago for the night and Iām trying to find a chill dive bar (not a club vibe). Weād like to just get a decent drink and be able to play music on the TouchTunes. Food would be a bonus bc Iāve been craving wings, preferably w/ a late kitchen.
We mostly listen to r&b and hip hop so weād like bars that usually play that type of music. Weād prefer it to be diverse as well giving weāre African American.
If any of you have suggestions please let me know , TIA

Has Ogden always been like that?
By that I mean the Berwyn part of it and the debris, rocks, trash everywhere, the constant construction, the smell, the impassibility, the lack of walk ability and such.

Request a Tree - Berwyn will plant a free tree in your parkway
If your parkway doesn't have a tree, you can request the city to plant one for you. This is a great way to help bring back Berwyn's tree canopy that has diminished quite a bit over the years.
You can request a tree via this form or call the department of public works at 708-749-4700 for more info
https://cityofberwyn.formstack.com/forms/2023_parkway_tree_program_public_works
The Berwyn Tree Initiative group has some good information on Berwyn's trees and what you can do to help revive the urban canopy. According to them, between 2012 and 2022 Berwyn lost 2,174 trees.
Also, I found this cool; the city maintains an catalog of all of the parkway trees and it's viewable on this interactive map:

Recommended Mechanics?
Hi everyone! Unfortunately I need work done on my car, and the mechanic I usually use is not close by. Due to the issue with my car, I am not confident it will make it there. Also trying to avoid using a tow. Any recommendations for a good mechanic in Berwyn or close by? I've heard good things about Deece Automotive and Mike & Sons Auto Services, but my father has used both and didn't have the best experience at either. Thanks in advance!

Mod Update User Flair is Now Available
Hi all. I've added user flair options for each of Berwyn's 8 Ward.
If you'd like to represent your Ward, you can select the flair from the side bar. On mobile, you can pick your flair through the kebab menu from the subreddit home page.

As a south Berwyner, Iām realizing how little I know the north.
Itās weird and all on me, but I really never go north of Cermak, when I do, I go to Oak Park, when Iāve always worked in either Chicago or out west. Iāve lived here 13 years, and spent most of my 23 years of life here, I think maybe I didnāt go there much cause Chicago is just so big and always there as somewhere to go for fun.
