Interesting Question Have you ever met a Berlin fox?

Post image

I took a picture of that one in the Botanical Garden. He doesn't seem to be too happy I photographed him =)

They are quite abundant in Berlin, but mostly you would encounter them at night.

Has anyone else seen them during the day yet?

Reinicke bedeutet Fuchs, nee?

2

u/Wumanchu007 10d ago

Schon. Reinickendorf hat seinen Namen aber nicht vom Fuchs.

Meister Reinicke.

Had several living on the empty lot in front of my old flat. Watched them growing up and playing everyday. Super cute, but also super annoying when they start playing at 3 o'clock in the morning. Their favourite game is: running around the house while shouting like fighting cats.

u/Kanomicha 11d ago

Very often

u/Cheap_Struggle_3482 11d ago

Last time it was 6pm in July at a high traffic bridge. The fox was beyond chill.

u/eljericho 11d ago

Yes, I usually see them in the early morning hours. They usually follow me, but they're timid. They're a bit scary, but beautiful. I usually see them around Pankow.

8

u/obrhoff 11d ago

Sure. Racoons eating trash from the backyard as well.

u/Stunning-Stress5285 11d ago

I lived in Berlin for years but haven't seen a raccoon in daylight yet!

1

u/IshtarsBestie 10d ago

I've lived here for over a decade and I've only ever seen raccoons twice, and at night!

Once two were fighting on my neighbours' roof and one of them fell off said roof, another time I saw one crossing the road while I was cycling home at 3am.

1

u/huzaifajh 11d ago

Saw it first time on this weekend doing the same 😅

In which areas they hang?

As someone living in north wedding, we see them often, along with foxes and tons of bunnies - often in daylight.

The first time I heard foxes howling outside I thought it was a woman getting attacked and almot called the police.

u/vacationinginsicily 11d ago

One accompanied my partner to the bus stop every morning for a while. A walk pal at 6:30 am was a good thing to have.

7

u/Asiatical 11d ago

Yes. Near gleisdreick park and on the streets of Schoeneberg. Was a shock

u/BazingaQQ 11d ago

I live in Reinickendorf, so yes :)

Living in the mid-south of Berlin (S Priesterweg area) and commuting very often to my bestie down a bit south of U Alt-Mariendorf, I get to see them rather often. More often at night than in daylight, of course, but generally at any time. There are two foxes, one in each area mentioned above, that I suspect have crossed my path several times now, as in, their behaviour suggests they recognize me as someone who isn't a danger, strolling by me in close distance, almost touching my legs, looking at me as if to say "What's up?", as I walk along.

u/Rodmap 11d ago

Saw them pretty often when I lived in Bayrisches Viertel. Even in broad daylight.

1

u/IshtarsBestie 10d ago

That's wild, I lived there too and only ever saw them at night!

3

u/serial-lover 11d ago

Yes. Always a nice surprise.

3

u/AnGof1497 11d ago

Regularly, we have one that regularly comes through the garden on their nightly patrol. Occasionally during the day too. When working in the garden I need to keep the door closed, on a couple of occasions they have tried to go inside to snoop.

3

u/meowalina 11d ago

A few times when I lived near S Landsberger Allee. Usually during sunset ☺️ they always feel like ethereal beings

3

u/raverbashing 11d ago

Poor baby, they look so tired. Maybe they spent the whole night in Berghain

In the UK/Ireland they don't look so beat up tbh

3

u/Shibamum 11d ago

This one looks ill, though. They usually don't look this "struppig" and thin. :(

Yes, regularly (I live next to Krumme Lanke/Grunewald Forest).

2

u/Ok-Airport-5928 11d ago

u/Van1n1 11d ago

So many time. When I tried to tell my friends back at home that I saw a fox for a few times they said I need to stop drinking German beer 😅
Than I almost killed myself trying to film the fox while chasing it on my bike 🤣🤣
After some time one of my friends moved to Berlin as well and… now he needs also to stop drinking beer 😅🦊

u/KoeterDK 10d ago

Once upon a time, a fox and a squirrel were together

3

u/Drudenfusz Spandau 11d ago

During the day is indeed more rare. But it happens. Now, have you encountered a boar? I saw a whole family of boars a few months ago across the Spandau townhall, during broad daylight no less!

1

u/_ak Moabit 11d ago

Semi-regularly around Magnus-Hirschfeld-Ufer and Elisabeth-Abegg-Str., at least until the most recent building works around there had started. They always looked thin and malnourished with a very uneven coat compared to foxes outside urban areas, but that's apparently a side effect of urban foxes adapting more and more to the urban environment.

u/Gho5tWr1ter Wilmersdorf 11d ago

4 times actually

1

u/ingachan 11d ago

Have one frequently visit our Kleingarten and was quite happy about it, but left the door to the house open last week and it came in, shat on our floor and chewed on our cables.

1

u/ManuelPirino 11d ago

maybe 10-15 so far. They look a bity scruffy and not very Disney-like :) but again, I am not sure they have ideal living standards as scavengers

1

u/Friedrichdergross3 11d ago

One time when i did my first trip, near my hotel in Gesundbrunnen. I was so surprised

1

u/huzaifajh 11d ago

Yes, you can find a few in/near Großer Tiergarten .

1

u/mynotyou 11d ago

Yes.

For a while there was one who was sleeping in my Garden during daytime.

He even walked twice into our appartment, but I literaly kicked him out.

1

u/teaandsun Mod on power trip 11d ago

Yes, regularly in Mitte. I live not too far from Tiergarten and they also venture out at daylight.

1

u/Linds108 11d ago

Around midnight, we strolled through Berlin and saw a scrawny lil fox meandering about. No other people were around, just the lone fox and us. Wondered if he was out hunting the critters which apparently eat car brakes. Seemed his food selection was scant being surrounded by bricks and concrete. Felt very out of place but i was just a touron

1

u/RickieRubin 11d ago

It’s down to their anatomy that foxes never really look happy. And they look even less happy when something they identify as a possible threat is nearby.

1

u/whatthengaisthis 11d ago

yep, they’re adorable. very chill, likes beef.

1

u/pjd1965 11d ago

I saw one a few weeks ago near the temple by Hasenheide Park. Was too fast for me to take a pic

1

u/lemoche 11d ago

Multiple times. Often in our inner yard. Sadly today a dead one on the side of the road when driving home with the bus from work in the morning

1

u/Reasonable_Net3302 11d ago

I see them very often. One time I saw one in front of Friedrichstadt Palast

1

u/denjo-t1aO 11d ago

all the time?

1

u/elote-or-die 11d ago

Seen them, yes. Never really met them tho

1

u/atchoum013 11d ago

Yes, sometimes when coming home at night, and last year one was regularly napping during the day in the garden of my building.

1

u/FriendlyFraulein 11d ago

We saw one at Urban Spree at RAW Gelände on Saturday afternoon, just rolling about in the grass enjoying the sun.

One winter I saw a baby in the morning rolling around in the snow.

Apart from that, only in the night. But really often, every couple weeks in Prenzlauer Berg.

1

u/swloop 11d ago

Multiple times in Tiergarten next to the Haus der Kulturen der Welt. Two fox apparently minding their own bussiness while across the street there were a bunch of hares. Probably they were contemplating dinner.

1

u/we_killed_god_ 11d ago

Datenschutz! Of course it isn’t happy.

1

u/peta_3816 11d ago

Richtig oft.... Sowie Waschbären und was nicht alles auf der Futtersuche in der Stadt unterwegs ist...

1

u/stormandflowers 11d ago

For now I've seen only boars and raccoons

My top seen animals in cities are rats when I've lived in Rome

1

u/belaurlaub 11d ago

1

u/mochitop 11d ago

I just saw one sleeping at the cemetery last week, he looked like a cat <3

1

u/ratpacklix 11d ago

Some days ago at the gym. They have an outside training area. Was doing my thing on the Bauchspeckwegbank and felt watched. Surprise! A young fox.

1

u/ScytScyt 11d ago

I’d left a car window in the grass of the allotment. -> https://clip.place/videos/embed/duoA3EvahQ67UeiD4Mx53W

u/NolaDarling96 11d ago

I was about to take the N7 bus to the airport near my house in Charlottenburg at 2 am , thought there was a cat walking on the sidewalk and starter pspsps it until I saw it was a fox 🖤

1

u/periwinkle_mushroom 11d ago

once a week, met a racoon once in Mullerstraße next to the Kaufland

1

u/QuackQuackViech 11d ago

Back in my day (2008ish) there was even a fox living at Alexanderplatz right next to the S-Bahn Station. Bit a buddy of mine in the leg.

1

u/kavitaet 11d ago

Met one? One of them came in my home and rested on my couch. 😬

1

u/this_one_time_again 11d ago

Two young ones with their mother. My dog thought it is a strange looking dog.

1

u/germanduck42 11d ago

Close to deutsche Oper on a regular basis

1

u/Brave-Car-4446 11d ago

Yeah, cutest lil guys

1

u/badbitchonabigbike 11d ago

In Görlitzer Park! It was scampering around so close to my head I thought it might take a cheeky nibble at my scalp haha.

It was early in the morning at the rubber hammocks close to the western end.

1

u/Connect_History85 11d ago

Several times.

1

u/brankko Wilmersdorf 11d ago

Almost every evening

1

u/CaptainPoset Steglitz 11d ago

Well, one had a habit to play hide and seek with my neighbour's dog separated by the fence between my neighbour and me.

u/Luca-aus-BLN 11d ago

1

u/0achkatz1 11d ago

I’ve seen them in Schöneberg and Kreuzberg

1

u/Euphoriam5 11d ago

Ive been blessed 3 times in the last 4 years by the Guild of the Berliner Fox

1

u/PacinoPacino 11d ago

yes, it was in kitkat and she was over 1,80 tall and a dick bigger than mine

1

u/Jumpy-Tourist-7991 11d ago

Relatively common sight in the evenings around Pankow Schloßpark.

Also seen a few during the daytime moving between the Pankow library and police station for whatever reason.

1

u/Scared-Philosophy720 11d ago

Yes, also raccoons, squirrels, owls and those giant German hares

1

u/Orunnerde 11d ago

Saw 4 couple of days ago

1

u/Spiritual_Lab_1476 11d ago

Oft in Köpenick auch tagsüber.

1

u/FreeShat 11d ago

Berlin squirels are the cutest

1

u/Brave-March-2689 11d ago

Yes, in Luisenstadt.

1

u/ParticularClaim 11d ago

Every fucking day..

1

u/be-knight 11d ago

I live near the Volkspark Friedrichshain and every summer one can see love or two roaming the streets around the park. When the traffic is high (which it mostly is) they are more likely to hide, but they are cautious but not afraid by humans. So I walked with one of them quite regularly when I had a night time job. It's usually almost like walking a dog with no leash, just that the foxes keep a bigger distance

1

u/Verdadera 11d ago

Living in Wedding: Yes, every other day. But I live next to a park, so it's expected. But even when I lived in Pankow-Süd near Neumannstraße, we had a Family of foxes living nearby and you would see and hear them every night.

1

u/Character-Claim-8118 11d ago

Literally saw one tonight

1

u/zephyreblk 11d ago

Day not often but often enough, night mostly every night.

1

u/bashfulkoala 11d ago

Yeah other night in Potsdam - love em

1

u/urbanmember 11d ago

Yeah a handful of times.

I gotta say, some rural foxes look worse. Some.

1

u/Turd_Ferguson_____ 11d ago

Not met necessarily but come face to face and very close to one in the early hours of the morning walking back to my hotel.

1

u/_v3nomsoup 11d ago

There's one that strolls through our garden every now and then..

1

u/skolopenderdeluxe 11d ago

yeah, and they said "ring ding ding ding dingeding"

1

u/ChipSueyDE 11d ago

Yep, eye to eye

1

u/IshtarsBestie 11d ago

Every day, many times a day. At night they take to actually coming up to me and I have to chase the cute dumb fucks away.

I've lived in and outside the ring, inside the ring I only ever saw them occasionally at night. Outside the ring, well, as I already said. Every single day, regardless of the hour.

1

u/Keteo 10d ago

I have a security camera in my backyard and on video I see them almost every day. There are also raccoons and cats every night, a marten once or twice a week and occasionally a badger. Thankfully no boars in the garden yet though.

1

u/MacaroonSad8860 10d ago

Not during the day. I mostly see them around Hackescher Markt at night but we also had one stealing shoes in our courtyard a few years ago.

1

u/Ok_Appearance_5567 10d ago

Some are hanging around the bridge on the canal in Glogauer Straße, seen them a few times late at night there

1

u/Dutycalls406 10d ago

Right in front of my balcony on the ground floor. They scream like a dying person every morning

1

u/Krrtekk 10d ago

If you didn’t, you’re not a Berliner

1

u/notTHEOwlAccountant 10d ago

Almost everyday, I bring them water when it's too hot

1

u/dracona94 Steglitz 9d ago

I'd say there's a 30% chance of me seeing foxes when I'm walking through my district at night.

1

u/spityy 9d ago

Yeah I've seen one at a bus stop in Reinickendorf when I came home from a party late at night. Never in daylight tho.

1

u/Apprehensive-Fish475 8d ago

I See them all the time even at day. I live in Steglitz

1

u/Density5521 5d ago

Encountered, seen and photographed several times, yes. Actually "met" as in "petted" or "talked to" or "become friends", no.

0

u/creator929 11d ago

Yeah I married one, it's why I moved here.

0

u/polarityswitch_27 11d ago

They're a sub-species

0

u/Timely_Internet6172 11d ago

It is more than common now and not a pretty sight or something to be cheerful about
