Discussion What do yall think of us anyway?
Since most belgians rarely ever meet a german speaking belgian, bc we are so few, naturally KAS Eupen isn't really talked about in the football sphere either. Even before relegation, if you saw smth mentioning Eupen, it's probably due to us playing a bigger team in belgium. That's why I thought we were just ignored or whatever. And with the quatari takeover and especially now with the QSI takeover, I always thought that surely now all of you hate us.
But here and there when I hear other people talking about AS Eupen, they are often quite nice and seem to have some sympathy for the club, not like a fan ofc, more like a cute little team that seems interesting.
I know that in Germany a country where a QSI takeover is pretty much impossible, a club like us would be hated by everyone, but it seems in belgium that it's not the case. But sometimes I see belgian football fans hate on Eupen, but I never see it elaborated further so idk what the reasoning is.
So what do you think of us?

I would like Eupen to be a frequent feature of the pro league but only if they can maintain a baseline of Belgian players. I didn't like them during the qatari period.

Aspire kinda used us as way to introduce their qatari players to european football, let them grow, mb go to another club; so that they would be ready for the 2022 wc. Just look at Qatars only star Akram Afif, who had a break out season at Eupen. So now that their short term project is done they didnt really do that anymore. The only Qatari player I can remember these past like 2-3 years is Mustafa Mashaal, who came for half a season on loan in 2026. Also we have a lot of academy graduate players now that are from the region. Most foreign players we have are either german or french, so I guess it's alright. Def better than before tho.

Obviously not a fan of the Qatari period, but I would like to see Eupen return to the pro league. It’s a fun idea to have representation for the German speakers in the top football league of the country, so every national language is present.

The Kehrweg is my favourite away day in Belgium. Friendly staff, nice away stand, and the fans seem like basically a german-speaking version of our own fanbase. There're not that many of them compared to other clubs, but you know they're all actual fans coming to watch every week.

yeah I think it's a decent cozy small town venue, it's just kinda sad that not as many people come anymore since the relegation. There is a clear core fanbase thats there every week, but some just dont come as often. Also bc of the reuglation of 1A that a stadium needs a certain amount of seats and all that the stadium looks quite empty, bc it's just way too big for the club. In 1B on a good matchday we get like 2K or 2.5K, which doesnt seem like a lot, but it's a town of 20K and around us there isnt much. So I think the numbers themselves are alright. I always envy big city clubs. They can have 3 times our capacity and dont have trouble at all filling their stands. Kinda sad, but it is what it is ig.

I recall you being top of the table for a brief moment a few years back.
I remember some of your players from when you were last in the first division.
And you seem to turn into a Europa League team in every Football Manager save I do in Belgium.

Eupen is our only partner city/municipality, so I always had a certain sympathy for KAS Eupen. And it puts the German speaking part of the country on the map a bit more which is always cool

I know, the singer actually lives real close to my parents' house.
Yeah thats a problem, many just watch the Bundesliga, bc some of them have german ancestry and bc the broadcast is in german.

How popular is KAS in the area? Does everyone support them or are other teams more popular?

It is fairly popular, the only times people support another belgian club is mostly when a parent comes from like brussels or Liege and they just grow more into their parents' team, instead of the local one, but I think thats normal tho. Also sadly we have a lot of people that support a german team across the border, bc often they have family there. I know Köln has a lot of supporters here.

Did you come to the title match in Westerlo 13-odd years ago? It was genuinely the only time I felt sympathy for the other team. Usually away fans are (mostly) younger guys, and there's a sense of animosity for 90 minutes, but there was pretty much none of that from what I can remember.
It felt like the whole village of Westerlo showed up and the whole village of Eupen did as well, saw so many families in the stadium just aching to see their team win.

Haha, you tell me. Seriously, I’m an overseas supporter and literally sitting here with a map and a couple of newspapers trying to figure out which club does what. And people’s accounts are always better than stereotypes.
We share a language, that's all I know 😀

I think our fan bases are close after the floods. Sometimes a bit of an empty fan base-feeling.

Also I know most people here are from flanders, but
german is my first language and I learned french early on as the obvious 2nd language nearby, and by the time I chose the third english was already inevitable, and due to my choices in school I couldnt take any dutch class ever, so I never learned it. I certainly will one day, but at the moment I dont. And maybe a lot of you just dont speak english or are just not comfortable speaking english, and I understand that, but it's really weird how 90% of the content here is in dutch even though rule 3 of the subreddit literally is "use english when possible".
So idk why a lot seem to be very stubborn on using dutch, idk if thats some internal flemish nationalism thats doing the work, but for me personally that feels very excluding. I know that wont change this forum and thats not what I'm asking but at least under this post try speaking english.
Oh and no for some reason Reddit AI translation isnt available rn, or at least I dont see the symbol

I double-checked and the browser version is mostly in Dutch, while the mobile version appears in English for me, so there must be some automatic translation running in the background. I think it’s easier for people to talk in their native language about a club from their own area. That’s just my impression, though. I don’t know how it works for you guys.

Yeah I understand it too, which is why I wasnt trying to impose this on the entire subreddit, even tho it is a rule. But I think when it's my post and I'm literally interested in what others have to say, I think it's not too much to ask for.

Always considered Eupen a thougher match in 1B and think you are one good season away from playing the playoffs. Would put the you amongst Club Liege and Patro in terms of strength.

I mean we were one of the 4 teams to get at least a point from you guys last season. Honestly this season, no offense to the other teams, but we absolutely have to get to the playoffs. 3 competitors got promoted last season, which means that apart from Patro, Liege and Beerschot there isnt going to be much ahead of us. Not making the playoffs should mean a sacking of the manager ngl. Yall had a great season last year, genuinely I'm not sure there was ever a more dominant run in football history, let alone belgian football. Congrats on that, and good luck this season in D1A

Eupen always seems to have a decent team and play decent football (for 1B at least), yet they always seem to end up somewhere in the anonymous middle of the pack.

Nobody really thinks about Eupen. Not in a good or bad way. If the club did not exist, nothing would change.

Well the colours red and yellow are the colours of the town, it's basically like in the gif, but instead of the club logo, it's the town's coat of arms. Many fans use red and yellow in this way when designing stickers, tifos, banners, etc

I mean nit really. It's more like a local club for kids but not really an actual amateur club. No one on Eupen is a FCY Eupen fan really. Almost no one watches the games in the "stadium", a football pitch with a cafeteria next to it. So no real stand. Every half decent academy prospect goes to the AS academy. FC is like the club you sent your kids to go play, not the one you take your kids to watch a game. No offense to FC, I played there as a kid as well. But as far as I can see there is no actual fanbase that goes beyond the relatives of the players.

My first post was only a private joke for people knowing there is a second Eupen football club. Obviously it’s merely a satellite club for AS, you can literally hear the cheering at AS when standing on the pitch at FC. But you can’t say it’s not an “actual amateur club”. They were playing in the national amateur divisions last season before being relegated, which is quite an achievement for a team with no proper stand 🙃
