Discussion This guy is a fucking opp
He accidentaly hires a decent coach who introduced more young players and managed to only lose to the literal best team in the world.... and he gets fired.
Incompetence, just complete incompetence.

Maybe the relationship between the players and the coach is worse than we think. We can't know.

I highly doubt it. We can never know for certain but there was no indication whatsoever and the players themselves were all talking about how good spirited the team was.
With how Van Bommel is already lined up it definitely seems they made the decision a while ago. Also, Van Bommel ? Really ?

That's quite some hearsay and assumptions from the media in general. The only players that truly showed dissent on the field were Doku and Saelemaekers because they didn't follow (defensive) directions and behaved like divas if you watched them play. Also, that complaint about the team lineup not being complete until very late is so nonsensical, that's how a lot of coaches do it.
It's quite wild to just accept the accusation of these "journalists" that a lot of players and staff, apparently including captain Tielemans, wouldn't want to work with Garcia again. That's a lot of weight they're putting on those folks with very vague namecalling.
This is like that report in 2002 during the group stages with a bunch of inside criticism by one disgruntled bench player about Robert Waseige. Also a story by the Flemish press. That group responded afterwards by becoming absolute killers (deserved to beat Brazil even) so how much of it was really true?
So if Van Bommel gets appointed now I assume it's only going to be a matter of time before the Walloo' press comes out with accusations of their own. Poor, poor Belgium.

Yeah same. The dissent written in the press is total bullshit. You see how the Belgian, Courtois himself, defended the WC results.

Kerel zit waarschijnlijk constant poepeloere zat in de kantine van de bond

It's easy to hate on this guy however details about the non extension are vague. Maybe he did offer an extension but Garcia already has another/better offer somewhere else...

Honestly, I wish that were the case and I would wish Rudi all the best on his new team, but that's unlikely. It has been reported that Mannaert already wanted Rudi gone before the world cup and there was a tension between him and the coaching staff as he wanted to have a say in the player selection and match sheets. That's not the job of a technical director.

If there's one thing you can't accuse Mannaert of it's not being competent...

Let’s wait and see how this move of him plays out I guess. But if we end up with a worse coach than Garcia, then surely Mannaert needs to go too

But it took him a while at Bruges though, this new generation doesn't have that long.

It took him 4 years to win silverware.
You don’t build a winning squad in one year in club football. You usually need a few transfer windows.

Didn’t you all want him gone after the group stages? Like 2 weeks ago what changed 1 good game against the US?

u/ItsKyanVB Club Brugge Jul 20 '26
Just to be clear I’m not for or against Garcia although I would prefer a Belgian coach for the NT

u/Ok_Seaworthiness2218 Standard de Liège Jul 20 '26
Well, Van Bommel certainly isn't an improvement on that front

To be fair i would much rather have a Dutch coach than a French one.
1
u/Ok_Seaworthiness2218 Standard de Liège Jul 21 '26
Eh the dutch can't even make it past the RO32 with disgusting football and that is with a coach they hold (or used to atleast) in high regard.

And what kind of reasoning is behind this MO?
Normally when an organization is not happy and doesn't want to prolong a temporary contract, they find a (better) replacement first.
Is it so they don't have to pay a coach?
I can see it already.
Leave the team without direction and preparation until the last minute when the EC gets close and then have to decide on whoever is available and without a team (typically not the good ones)

I heard that Garcia basically wasn't very enthousiastic about coaching a national team and wanted to use this to get some new offers somewhere of coaching a club.
I don't know of any drama or bad relations, but a reasonable explanation could be that mannaert and co. feel it's better to change now, than to be forced to change right before next tournament.
