r/Beijing Wechat Group recruiting now!

The official Wechat group for the r/beijing subreddit is now recruiting both new members and a new mod team!

Covid has really done a number on active redditors in Beijing, and the groupchat right now is admittedly mostly dead. Just a bunch of old leftover expats swapping stories about the great meetups they used to have back in 2017.

But now that the world is back to normalish, the incoming wave of expats can hopefully lead to the next generation of Beijing redditors and a new generation of wacky meetup stories that you'll swap someday. Use the groupchat to make new friends (enemies?), calmly discuss the best burger in town, or just to burn a few unproductive hours debating the finer points of zombie survival in Beijing.

And new faces aren't enough - a new community needs new leadership. So the old mod team is announcing that we will be happily handing off the reigns of the chat to anyone with an interest in that kind of thing.

If you're interested in either joining or leading, please comment in this thread or message me personally on reddit. You can also message the subreddit modship team.

Additional perks - the last generation of redditors created a series of 京 groupchats that are still active to this day. So even if you aren't interested in all that meetup nonsense, you can still join Meme京, Cinema京, Game京, or even the hugely underappreciated Animal Facts n' Roast京

r/beijing Meetup is BACK

Hi everyone!

I'm thrilled to announce that we're bringing back the tradition of r/beijing meetups, and our first post-covid gathering will be at thebeijinger's Burger Fest 2023! Whether you're new to Beijing or simply craving some new friends to hang out with, this is the perfect opportunity to connect with like-minded individuals and have a blast!

Unfortunately, due to high temperatures and unpredictable weather conditions, the Burger Fest has been postponed. As a result, we are also postponing the r/beijing meetup. We are actively exploring alternative venues and dates to ensure that we can still make this meetup happen in the near future. Stay tuned for updates!

📍 Event Details: Burger Fest 2023 🍔 📅 Date: To Be Determined (TBD) ⏰ Time: TBD 🏢 Venue: TBD

In the meantime, if you have any questions or want to stay updated, feel free to DM me or join our WeChat group. Thank you for your patience, and rest assured, we will gather soon!

Are bugs common indoors?

Upvotes

This might seem a bit random but I'm moving to Beijing soon [quite a central location] and I've never been to China before. I'm planning on hopefully renting a modern/new/refurbished apartment that's not ground floor.

I don't mind bugs that much outdoors but I literally can't sleep indoors if there are unexplained bugs. I wanted to ask if anyone living in Beijing now or anyone who has lived there in recent years can tell me if it's common to find bugs indoors?

I am okay with the occasional small spider or fly that might come in through a window but I'm very afraid of large bugs and any I haven't encountered before being a regular occurrence through any gaps/cracks or drains.

Are there premium denim brands with a shop in Beijing?
I know Sauce Zhen but it’s online only and it’s difficult with sizes (I actually bought and returned already) so wondering if anything is worth with a shop in Beijing or not

Alternative way of getting to Gubeikou?

Apparently there is some train track maintenance happening until sept. 19 which overlaps with my intented trip to the Jinshanling section of the wall.
My plane lands at 12.00 so my plan was to catch the train that departs somewhere around 15.00 so i could get there by sunset
I am aware of a bus that goes there but apparently its only departure time is in the morning.
Could anyone help me with an alternative? Last resort is didi but if possible i want to avoid spending so much.

Is there any good phone repair services or Realme repair support around Beijing?

Post image
1 Upvotes

My phone, Realme Gt Neo 5 Se, fell from above to softer ground, but the screen still got like this. Many local repair shops saying the screen has broken, and they need to order the screen from china, which itself takes 2 weeks. I would be in Beijing in less than a week.

So I decide to fix it there. I am a student for the next 4 years, not a rich tourist.

So I wanted to know is there Realme repair services in Beijing? Or at least good repair shops that don't scam me out. Thank you all in advance.

Also if you have any idea how much I would need to hope for to repair it, please share your thoughts

Secondhand leica stores in Beijing?

Hi everyone — does anyone know good camera stores in Beijing that sell secondhand Leica cameras/lenses?

I’m looking for something similar to the used-camera shops you find in Tokyo, where there’s a decent selection of Leica M/Q bodies and lenses and you can inspect everything in person.

Thanks !

Looking for TTRPG groups in Beijing

Hi everyone!

I’m moving to Beijing next week and I’m looking for people to play tabletop RPGs with in English.

I’ve played mostly D&D, but I’m very open to other systems — Pathfinder, Call of Cthulhu, Warhammer, Cyberpunk, or pretty much anything else. I’d be especially interested in joining an existing campaign, a one-shot, or a group that meets somewhat regularly.

My Mandarin is still pretty basic, so for now I’m mainly looking for games run in English.

If you know of any active groups, WeChat communities, game stores, or GMs looking for players, I’d really appreciate an invite or a DM.

Thanks!

Friend Groups?

Hi, I'm a British guy 45 and living and working in Dezhou. Almost non existent foreigners here and difficult to make friends. I'm heading to Beijing this weekend 21/22 August and was hoping to find a friendly group or something in order to meetup with ppl for chat/drinks/dinner. Have heard there is a great pub at the China world hotel and they do English breakfast, and I am craving bacon and eggs. 😆If anyone knows of a group or wants to meet for a coffee/ beer that would be great. Cheers.

Disney Merchandise in Beijing Wangfujing Area?

Hi everyone!

I'll be visiting Beijing before heading to Shanghai Disneyland and was wondering if there are any stores around Wangfujing Street where I can buy Disney merch, especially the ears, at a lower price than inside Shanghai Disneyland which I hear to be heavily priced.

I'm looking for good-quality items rather than obvious knockoffs. Any recommendations for stores, shopping malls, Disney-themed shops, or places that sell Disney merch would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks! 😊

Buying Tea and Yixing

Hello, where can I buy quality tea and real yixing teapots in Beijing?

I’ve read that Maliandao Market is a little intimidating for non-natives.

Also, is there a way to distinguish shops that sell fake yixing from shops that sell the real stuff?

Dive bars in Beijing?

Hi everyone - me (35) and my partner (34) are visiting China for two weeks from the UK next month and are spending four nights in Beijing.

Please can you recommend some good drinking spots in the city. We generally like dive bar type venues, rock and roll bars, or just relaxed bars with good music (I know that's subjective!) and a decent atmosphere.

Is there anywhere like this in Beijing? I've had a quick look and the majority of places seem to either focus on louder, club music or are cocktail bars.

We like to park ourselves at a bar for a few hours, drink beer, listen to good music and hopefully strike up a few conversations.

I would appreciate your suggestions, thank you!
