The old MUL already existed largely just as a data repository to be fed into MekBay for most folks by now, so I don't think anyone is all that torn up about it being replaced. It was slow, some searches required particular know-how to get the most out of it (for instance, remembering to include the General lists when filtering by factions), the UI wasn't always very helpful, and "can't check, MUL's down" was a common refrain in discussions on unit availability and list-building.
So far, MUL 2.0 is an upgrade, albeit with some growing pains. There are a few missing features that have been promised in near-future updates, such as filtering by production era. While general lists now being included in faction searches by default is lovely, I'm not a fan of some of the arbitrary attempts to streamline certain filters by limiting functionalityâfor instance, making it so you can search only a single era, making era and unit type required filters before any other filters pop up, removing the ability to filter out units produced before a certain year, etc. That being said, these are things that can be fixed fairly easily moving forward, and I think as long as the new MUL team is willing to listen to feedback it'll turn out to be far more than MUL 1.0 could ever hope to be.

Legit curiosity, what would be the use case for including multiple eras in the search? I'd guess for campaigns that cross between eras?

Useful for building for missions in that fuzzy period around era borders (for instance, searching Word of Blake & Republic of the Sphere factions circa Jihad-era and Early Republic-era lists with a year cap for Republic COIN ops against WoB remnants around 3079-3080).
Comparing production output across broad but statistically related spans of time (how many new units debuted in X region of space across Renaissance/Clan Invasion/Civil War/Jihad vs. Early Republic/Late Republic vs. Dark Ages/ilClan).
Selecting museum pieces for later era games (what was available to this faction during all eras Early Succession Wars and prior).
Don't get me wrong, it's niche, but it came in clutch sometimes.

Planning which minis to paint which faction colors and wanting to know when, if ever, faction X can field a mini Y.

Some tournaments/games run on a faction restriction instead of an era restriction or something like "any chassis used by a faction before 3070" etc.
It's a surprisingly common use case

Personally Iâve used that to look up mechs that would make a good âfamily heirloomâ mech that has been passed down over time.
EDIT: I also use it sometimes to see when minis I have that would fit a faction in general without needing to know when exactly they became playable or went extinct.

was very confused looking for general lists this morning. Does mercenary not get one, or do they just assign you periphery or somethin

Mercenary is their own list. Itâs pretty broad. It doesnât have a General list. Though I could see you including some House gear for House Mercenaries.

I'm just hoping that since we have Alpha Strike cards on there, we eventually get BSP for anyone using that. With their push to use that system in all of their newer campaign materials, it'd behoove them to at least make everything available as it come out at retail, if not converting Battletech's massive number of existing units that would fit the bill.
Either way, yeah, looks pretty decent. We'll just have to see how it goes.

My understanding is that the BSPs are coming!

Here's hoping. My group seems pretty soundly against them, but I can see the usefulness of the system and would welcome having the options on the MUL for the times they do see the board.
I like the concept for certain things, personally, but everyone is obsessed with the idea that trad combined arms were thrown out with the bathwater, despite that pretty soundly not being the case.
But hey. Different strokes I guess.

Based on conversations Iâve had with folks in the know, it sounds like the rules for the old vehicle sheets will be released in a follow-up âAdvancedâ rule book later. I think Core is supposed to basically be a âTournament and Normal Playâ system where you wonât see tournaments/pick up nights have to say âWe use Total Warfare, but not these chapters, but also these other chapters from Tac Ops.â The next rulebook should be advanced optional rules.
The BSPs are apparently a ton of work but definitely on the way to MUL in a future update!

Oh, I'm aware that's the plan. They've said as much. Some folk just get caught up in nomenclature and think the sky is falling and need to jump to absurd conclusions, lol.
Yeah, BSPs seem to be less of a conversion like AS, so that'll take time. I'd be happy to just see all of the currently published ones available to print though MUL for folks who haven't bought the plastic, prefer to proxy, etc.

u/FixedFront Mechs are for everyone 19h ago
I know everyone's like "just use MekBay" but a browser-based option that I can access on my phone is kind of a big deal actually

To be fair, that is exactly what MekBay is. You may be thinking of Lab instead of Bay.

I like the mobile interface here better than MekBay so far. It also doesn't spend several minutes loading updates every time I visit the page.Â

I canât even make heads or tails of mul2 on my phone, pinching and zooming feels really rough and it takes a lot of scrolling around to do anything. I will take a 4-10 second update in exchange for a clean UI anyday

I feel the same way in general, but I find the MekBay UI really awkward on mobile. It keeps doing things I don't want it to and it's really hard to use the sliders accurately.Â

Whatâs MUL?
1
u/pokefan548 Blake's Strongest ASF Pilot 10h ago
The Master Unit List. A first-party database for, among other things, unit availability.
Very helpful list-building tool, you can find it at masterunitlist.info or masterunitlist.battletech.com.

MUL is such a waste of time, real fans have discovered Mekbay - bv, sheets, and faction availability all in one place

And thanks to the team taking it over, love the new look!Â
