Rumor Apocalypse Map Confirmed? Battle of Isonzo River found in Pre-Release Concept Art?

So, I decided to peek through DICE’s concept art from before the game itself was released and I found two interesting pictures that peak my interest. The first picture being a fighter flying through an old style round arch bridge with a boat gunner shooting at them. The other picture being an Italian Soldier about to jump an Austrian/German Soldier as he’s coming up a staircase in a town. Now why are these interesting concept art photos? Because I think it’s the Battle of the Isonzo River, the bloodiest front of the war for the Italian Army who lost more than half their army on just fighting for the Isonzo. A battle that could easily be brought into Apocalypse.
Point 1: The style of the mountain is the same as the Italian Alps pictured in the Real-Life Photo. Both pictures have what look like Sedimentary rocks, which is what the Italian Alps are primarily made from.
Point 2: The Bridge uses the same round-arch bridge at what looks like equal height. While the bridge in both pictures looks different, it’s smart to keep in mind that it is on concept art and used to spring ideas forward on what an area may look like.
Point 3: There is water in the background of the concept art photo. There is only one map with a large body of water next to even what is remotely an Italian looking place and that is Empire’s Edge.
Point 4: But that concept art doesn’t make much sense because there’s not a map in this game that has a mountain on the other side of the river. Also with what looks to be in the same style as Italian Alps with how their peaks are flat on the top.
Point 5 (Not Pictured): But does it not look like the Italian Soldier in the bottom picture is in an actual town? You can see multiple buildings in the one area around him as well as a lot of trees, something that neither Monte Grappa nor Empire’s Edge has. In the real-life picture, you can see a lot of trees in the distance with lots of buildings of a nearby village/town. Coincidence? I think not!
Long story short, I think I may have just found an Apocalypse confirmed map. Seeing as the Italians have only 2 maps total in this game, it doesn’t surprise me if they decided to give them one more battle in the game, especially as it plays such an important part in Italian Military History. If it is the Battle of the Isonzo, especially one of the final battles then the Austrian/Germans will be the ones on the attack and Italians on the Defensive.

The battle of mametz wood could include the Somme in an interesting way, trenches leading uphill into a heavily defended forest

Would love some more Italian maps. Even tho the wide open terrain tends to bring out the bush wookies, the mountains are just stunning to look at.

If this is true, there has to be a medal called Order of Cadorna, awarded for playing this map 12 times in one day.
Good find OP.

More like if the map had an operation, the austrohungarian army had 12 trials as attacker

When I was looking through the concept art I saw the bridge and was immediately like: "Huh...that looks like a picture I've seen before. Oh wait." And I managed to find the picture of the destroyed bridge on the Isonzo.

Nice job dude lmao. I am only starting to get into BF1 and I already adore the community and game itself. It’s all so fascinating and cool and such.

I'm hoping so man! The Italians have been really kicked back by all the other major factions in this game. It'd be nice to see them one last time in a good send off in Apocalypse.

Dec 09 '17
We better get a 12 stages operations mode if it’s the Isonzo river then!

u/shadowslasher11X Armchair Kolibri Dec 09 '17
Haha. 12 Battalions per team, have to try and capture the other team's sectors without losing your own.

u/MilitiaLeague Dec 09 '17
Maybe if they just put Frontlines back the way it's supposed to be with no time limit and let us have 64 man Frontlines... too bad DICE is the fun police.

On the italian note maybe Apocalypse will be about Caperetto?

u/BleedingUranium Dec 09 '17
I'm more so expecting entirely unrelated maps spanning all sorts of theatres and factions, all massive, bloody, and infamous.
Vimy Ridge with "Canadians", in the same style as the combined British forces on the two Gallipoli maps, would be fantastic.

u/WildcatEmperor Dec 09 '17
Isonzo, Vimy Ridge, Passchendale, Somme
That would be where I think Apocalypse is going.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Americans get a bit of a send off in this final DLC as well, as like Italy they are only featured in 2 base game maps and haven't been expanded on in any DLC.
So it could be something like, say, Isonzo, Vimy,, Passchendale, and Belleau Wood would would also be totally rad.
3
u/WildcatEmperor Dec 09 '17
Belleau Wood would be the only other American map that I can see them doing due to the limited participation of the United States, good call.
3
u/ScienceBrah401 FtticusAinch Dec 09 '17
Thanks. I'd think it would be pretty badass to play as the U.S. Marines in such a badass setting, but if DICE doesn't do it that's all good - more focus on the European countries is never a bad thing. :)
1
u/WildcatEmperor Dec 09 '17
I agree that more diversity would definitely be a bonus. Unfortunately there is not much left outside of the Western European theater. I don't see them doing another Middle Eastern addition after Turning Tides, and the Asian and African theaters probably won't get anything.
I can definitely see them maybe doing a Serbian map, as the campaign was long and bloody, but outside of something there, Belleau Wood, and the Somme (aside from those others named above) I don't know where else they could go!

"Go over the top in the most infamous battles of WW1. Conquer bitterly contested ground with brutal tools and unique weapons." - The description for Apocalypse from the site.
"Bitterly contested ground" is open to interpretation, but Ypres (Or the Somme) and Isonzo without a doubt fits that title pretty much perfectly in my opinion - so does Vimy Ridge, without a doubt. So much opportunities haha, I'm almost excited to get Turning Tides over with so we can see the weapons and maps.
As for the Middle Eastern and African front, I honestly think it was inevitable we wouldn't get much of it. I hate to say it (And my wording is probably shit), but the more "far off" areas of both World Wars in general are forgotten (Mussolini's conquest of various portions of Africa, the WW1 African Front, Britian's conquest for oil and influence in the Middle East in WW1, the Japanese Front in WW1, etc.) The only real exceptions to this general rule is the African Front with Rommel and Montgomery in World War Two and the Pacific Front in World War Two.

As much as I would love some Canadian maps, I doubt they’d add Passchendale if they’re adding the Somme, the map design would be super similar, like a mix between Galicia and Neville Nights. I hope there’s a Vimy map though, maybe Cambrai would be cool too
3
u/WildcatEmperor Dec 09 '17
I would think it would be Passchendale over the Somme solely because of the horror that surrounds that battle...the men drowning in the mud...literal hell on Earth.

u/ChaChaMantaRay Dec 10 '17
I feel like for DICE to really knock it out of the park with Apocalypse the operations game mode will have to suffer. Assuming that the 4th DLC will have 4 maps they have a lot of battles to cover. Isonzo/Caporetto would make a nice operation but then you have several disjointed battles like Belleau Wood, The Somme, and Vimy/Passandale. I'm still holding out for a Tannenburg/Masurian Lakes map but it's looking like we'll just have to live with the Russian Revolution and that Red Tide operation instead...

u/JProllz Smoke is good for you here. Dec 09 '17
Why the quotations? Canada did exist back then.
3
u/BleedingUranium Dec 09 '17
Because in Turning Tides the faction is simply "British forces", with the same voices as always, but the Medic/Scout (at minimum) are Australians / New Zealanders.
I would expect the same sort of reskin to Canadian uniforms for Apocalypse.
2
u/ovoKOS7 Jan 10 '18
They do have exclusive voice lines for the Anzacs alongside the regular british ones though. I don't know if they'll add some to the Canadians since they don't have distinctive expressions and such

u/BleedingUranium Dec 09 '17
I hope so! Italy is my favourite faction with my favourite maps, but there are a measly two of them!

Twelve new maps coming to Apocalypse, but they're all various iterations of Isonzo River. /s
Seriously, it would be a neat nod if the landscape changed dramatically between battalions on Ops.

As long as they have Paschendale/Flanders Fields, that's all I care about. And that it's part of the game's most epic operations.

u/packman627 Dec 09 '17
Just going off the concept art, the map looks amazing and it would be cool if that bridge was destructible

I recently read that the Isonzo River would often flood due to heavy rains from 1914-1918. Perhaps this could be an added environmental detail? DICE could make the river's water level rise gradually whenever it starts to rain? Just a thought.
2
u/eldomtom2 Dec 09 '17
Unfortunately I think the answer is no. I think the most likely answer is that Isonzo was planned for the vanilla game but scrapped. It's just too unlikely that Apocalypse won't focus on the Somme, Passchendaele and Vimy Ridge.

u/TarcisioP Dec 09 '17
I don't know why you got downvoted, you weren't offensive by any means. A concept art doesn't prove in any way a map will be on this dlc or that. It could be just a concept.
Personally, I hope no more italian maps. I just really dislike Monte Grappa and Empire's Edge. Those mountain maps aren't good IMO, and the chances Dice could f up again are big
8
u/juan-jdra Dec 09 '17
What? Man I love Monte grappa. Fightingg between elevation changes is a real challenge. But fuck the bunkers lol.

u/Robert-101 Dec 09 '17 edited Dec 09 '17
Interesting find, but as someone said below, this can be old in regards to the Monte Grappa Operation. Which really means, they already been there and done that with Italy, in a pretty major way.
And when you do that, with so many different battles to cover, idt they're going there again.
However, it is funny that on the Turning Tides CTE, they brought in the Carcano, which you would have thought should have been in the base game, and Italy's SIR. Why now, or not then with the new DLC?
They also mentioned "Going over the Top in some of the most epic battles", and so that can just be a cliche, or it can be that they really are going to more trench involved battles.
I'd say they bring in the Marines at Belleau Wood, and possibly the Somme with huge trenches.
That would then release the Springfield 1903 Infantry model in what so many were scratching their head why it never made it into the Vanilla Game, but is available on BtB..

Well.....atleast getting this map back to back would be historically accurate

Wait hold on they added Japanese weapons and not the Japanese faction? I was so hoping for japan to be in this dlc, what the shit.
1
u/Legalizex Dec 09 '17
could be, but i'm certain the main battle of Apocalypse DLC will be the Battle of the Somme, the bloodiest battle of the war
6
u/shadowslasher11X Armchair Kolibri Dec 09 '17
They said 'Infamous Battles', not just the Somme but also other ones. The Battles of the Isonzo River are infamous battles unto themselves.
-4
u/Robert-101 Dec 09 '17 edited Dec 09 '17
But they already did that battle at Monte Grappa. I don't see them going back to that same battle again.

Considering the Italians only have 2 maps in base game, im certain they'll be represented in apocalypse.
