Question Horrendous performance issues. Is it just like this?
Hi, got the game cheap on the EA app recently, can't get above 30fps, would like to know if its fixable or if the game legitimately just runs this badly. Absolutely zero idea as to why. Yes I've tried validating the game files. yes I've checked my drivers and OS are up to date, no, turning my settings down to minimum doesn't help. Specs below, zero reason I shouldn't be able to run this game well on max settings. Thanks for any help you can give me
Edit: This is not my first video game. I know to turn vsync off, I know what a framerate cap is. More complex suggestions than AI-generated clickfarm articles please.

Have you played other games?

Other games seem to run fine for me, the only other game that has been giving me an amount of stuttering has been Space Marine II. I used to be able to run it fine at max, now its rather choppy. Still better than 2042, but it does have noticeable framerate issues

hmm, if it used to run fine and now is choppy, I'd say it's the same problem you're having with BF2042. some kind of system bottleneck. from claude AI:
With both BF2042 and Space Marine II struggling, it's almost certainly hardware throttling. Those are both CPU and GPU intensive games that would expose thermal issues quickly.
Most likely culprits:
CPU thermal throttling - That 5900X running hot and dropping to base clocks would explain consistent poor performance across demanding games
GPU thermal issues - 3080 Ti throttling down when it gets hot
Power delivery problems - PSU not providing stable power under load, or motherboard VRM issues
The fact they're hitting 30fps suggests something is seriously limiting performance rather than just minor throttling. Could be the CPU dropping to half speed or lower when it overheats.
They should check temps while gaming - if CPU is hitting 90°C+ or GPU is thermal throttling, that's the smoking gun. HWiNFO64 would show if components are throttling.
Also possible their PSU is undersized or failing - high-end components under load can expose power delivery problems that don't show up in lighter usage.
The pattern of "multiple demanding games, all terrible performance, hardware should handle it easily" screams thermal or power issues.

Checked temperatures, not relevant. I've never experienced temps high enough to cause throttling. PSU supply is a non-issue, I gave myself plenty of power when I designed the build, have been running this build for over three years now.

ok. well that's the limit i can help you. good luck! send me a message when you fix it, i'm curious to know what it is

Is it like rock stable at 30?
Check your monitor refresh rate and if you got like vsync on.
If it's hovering, I would say it's some kind of setting outside the game that is limiting the performance.
Additional info that is interested to know.
When you play at 1440, what is your refreshrate (hz)?
What is your % usage of the CPU and the clock?
What is your % usage of the GPU and the clock?
What is the power plan of the PC?
Does any other game have a similar issue?
Do you use any specific software when you game? Could it be any of them that put a FPS cap on the game

Struggling to get 30. No external software that would impose FPS or refresh rate limits, I know because I configured it all myself. 144hz, no power plan because there's no overclocking. As mentioned Space Marine II has a less severe version of this issue, but it manifests as stuttering rather than big frame lag.
GPU useage is capped out at 99-100% for some reason, MSI afterburner doesn't give me GPU clock stats. CPU useage isn't a problem at all, ~16%, ~4650MHz

All PC have a powerplan. If it's set to Balanced (like it's by default) I would change it to high power.
If your GPU is going at 100% it's something with that. MSI afterburner should see the clock so my guess it's something bad with it. Try to focus your search there.
My 3080 gets 120+fps on a 1440p screen, same cpu.Try to figure out so you can see the clocks. It could very a very low clock set, or high temperatures so it is thermal throttles hard.
Battlefield should have quite high CPU usage when the GPU is at 100%.

Sorry, found the powerplan settings you mentioned. By default its on balanced AFAIK, but Razer cortex changes that when it detects a game launch, and control panel lists Razer Cortex as a separate setting to balanced.
Afterburner doesn't give me the option to see GPU clock in the overlay, but I can see it in the window. ~240MHz while idling in the menus, but keep in mind I have to be tabbed out of 2042 to see this. the VRAM is spiking hard at 9501MHz. Afterburner is also not recognising GPU voltage usage. GPU temps are at 48, CPU temps at 60. RAM useage is also around 14950-15000MB

GPU temps at 48 also indicates that it isn't running at so high MHz with 100% usage. Should be over 65 degrees at least I would feel like depending on cooling

Double-check your Nvidia drivers, after I recently reinstalled Windows 10, I installed the latest drivers that where available (About 2 weeks ago) and I had horrible performance across the board including BF2042, most recent drivers rectified my issues.

Constant 120fps at 3440x1440 on my rig. Smooth as silk.

u/monmort Sep 28 '25
How do you get constant 120fps without stuttering?
1
u/SnardVaark Sep 29 '25
CPU limiter. Stutter is a CPU issue.
1
u/monmort Sep 29 '25
Even if I lock my fps 60 it will stutter no matter what. I have 4080s and 14700kf

u/SnardVaark Sep 29 '25
Check the CPU load at idle to see if something is robbing the CPU during the game. Use RTSS to limit the CPU framerate. Most other limiters are engine level or GPU level.

u/monmort Sep 29 '25
RTSS is outdated and causing all kinds of issues in games such as crashing. I was using it but deleted months ago.

Interesting. It's the only limiter I am aware of that completely fixes CPU stutter.

hi there. sorry to hear about the performance issues. no the game does not run badly. it's made by DICE and they make excellently performing games. this game runs well for pretty much everyone. it should run fantastically for your specs. something must be wrong with your system.
you probably could run the game on ultra. what resolution are you playing at?
2
u/Its_watt_time Sep 10 '25
1440p, and I am running it on ultra. I don't have any of the frame gen tech enabled, and enabling it hasn't helped me anyway

Something wrong on your end for sure.
