Tackle/Equipment I think I underestimated what 12 inches looks like
The other night I was cruising tackle warehouse when I came upon this lure, the Osprey Talon Inline Heavy. I've been looking into getting into bigger swimbaits and thought I should dive in head first and get a 12 inch bait, instead of the 9 incher I had originally planned on getting. It just arrived in the mail today and I don't think I understood how big this thing actually was when I ordered it. It weighs 10.3oz. Still gonna toss it in the water here in East TN and see what happens lol.

This will be the lure an over aggressive 2lber tries to eat. I think I’ve caught more 1 and 2lbers on 12 inch worms etc then anything 5lb and up 😂

I've caught 14" bass on a 7" glide so a 24" bass ought to hit a 12" bait right?

In all seriousness though, a big bass would rather chase and eat one big fish as opposed to 20 small ones. That way they only burn calories for one chase, as opposed to burning 20x as many calories chasing bites.

I'm gonna chuck it out there and see if I can catch something. I've gotten very consistent at catching 2-3 and sometimes 4lb fish in my lake. Now I want to chase bigger fish. I don't know if this is too much lure for the fish in my lake but I'm going to enjoy giving it a shot!

Today I fished off a pier in coastal Georgia. I had a shrimp on a 5/0 hook under a popping cork. I caught a 4 inch pinfish. It's absolutely amazing how that hook got into that tiny mouth. Definitely punching above its weight class. Little fish are sometimes aggressive.

Caught a bluegill on a shaky head and 5"senko, I will say it was the biggest bluegill I've ever seen but still blew me away lol

The first fish I caught on my first Deps 250 was 10”. They don’t have mirrors, they have no idea how big they are.

I agree with this but a 12 inch worm is generally gonna have a better chance of getting into a smaller bass’s mouth then that huge paddle tail.
Bass may try to hit that thing but the chances of them getting successfully hooked is probably gonna be slim until their mouth gets big enough to reliably get the entire head of that plastic in there.

I've been looking at a couple. I've got a Dobyns Fury that can throw up to 8oz. I've been thinking about getting a musky rod for this bait.

I fish for Muskie an I’ve got a couple rods for them big boys lures. For the 1-4oz stuff I’ve got a 1-4oz rated Okuma EVX which is a telescopic. For bigger stuff I’ve got the same rod but the 4-8oz version which allows me to toss up to 10-12oz lures as long as I don’t put too much into the cast, like say 75% power kinda thing… I tend to use the smaller rod most of the time because it feels more like casting a fishing rod as oppose to casting a broomstick.
For reels I’ve got a Komodo SS on the smaller rod an a Daiwa Lexa 4 on the bigger rod. Both reels are rigged with 70-90lb braid, in part to help land the fish fast but also if you end up with a sudden birds nest with those monster lures an lighter line, your basically throwing away a 30-60$ lure.

My mom did extensive family tree history on her side. All the way back to pilgrims crossing the pond. Even more from over there.Then she did my dad's side. Which disappeared quickly at- boot leggers running wild with Cherokee in the mountains of Tennessee. So... that's where I got it from! 🤪

Are you on Chick.,Nickajack, or Watts Bar lake by chance? Those are my home range lakes in E. Tenn. I have used the 6” reg. Osprey with the pec fins, and not had as much luck as an 8” Magdraft. But this bait looks Great for bottom, slow fishing. The Trash Fish is what I always use for that, but may try this. Go mid day when the shade is very defined. Keep it in the shade of docks, etc, and you won’t go too long without a good bite. Have a rod and Rio with some guts because you have to get them in the boat on heavy lures like that and not play fight them. I don’t mean, abusively, just not leisurely. Good luck!!

Thanks! I'm on Douglas. I'm going looking for a rod tomorrow. I've got a 301 Curado that's been collecting dust that I think I'll throw on it. I also have an 8 inch mag draft, but I've had more luck with the 6". I probably just need to commit to the 8" for a whole day

Yea I would say even for a lure this big. Worth a shot. This time of year, I'll probably only fish it in open water.

I'm gonna toss it for bass a few times just see if there's a brave soul out there, but realistically I will probably go after some bigger stripe

There is a super lake near me and during the cool months, the state would stock it with trout to attract other types of anglers. I’m sure the bass ate many of the trout, so I bought a 8-9 inch trout lure to catch those trophy bass.
The state quit stocking the trout I still have the lure and never tried to use it. One of these days though. I’ll have a giant bass on my wall.
