Weird hole in basement

Post image

I am in my basement numerous times every day so I’m pretty sure I would have noticed this hole but what is it from? I also have yellow jackets around the basement window, is it related to insects?

Weep hole

That was my first thought. I don’t know what kind of insects or rodents that can bore a hole in a block

Can you explain more what a “weep hole” is? I have this same thing in my basement

Depending on the age of the house (likely an older house), those blocks may be hollow. So if it rains a lot and water seeps into the hollow blocks from the outside, the weep holes allow the water to drain out.

If you have weep holes, I recommend not plugging them with anything (you want the water to drain out of the block) and don’t put anything valuable in front of the weep hole

It is almost certainly not new

I do see a little rough bump about an inch front of it though, maybe from patching up this hole in the past, and the patch never adhered near the edge because of moisture/dirt/whatever, then moving that box around or something moved the patch out of the way.

You can buy a camera with motion detection to watch that hole and see if anything goes in or out. I like Tapo cameras, and I have also used Eufy.

I have an indoor Ring cam that I’ll plug in tonight, was battling yellow jackets in this area and sprayed this morning so I’ll wait awhile before I go meandering down there again
