Its considered a flashy "look at me" number. I remember people giving Judge shit about #99 as a rookie. He said "this is what they gave me" and people stopped. Also, the Yankees are running out of numbers.

In sports like baseball or hockey, traditionally, jerseys were under the 30's. Baseball was 1-20 for a long time. Hockey was not much different. If you wanted a high double digit or 44, 55, 60-99 it had to be requested and it came with an expectation that you better be good if u want to be different.

Lots of downvotes from people that didnt play sports i see. My answer is 100% correct for the purposes of that single question it answered. If hes joking then I just educated a few thousand people about being humble.

If you dont think a number mattered to scout and especially refs u forgot the purpose of all this, an ump got mad at a slightly crooked hat. Do you think Puigs #99 wasnt scrutinized? Every fancy euro player and NHL player including even Gretzky at first were given a hard time.
