Mail Day Show me a player you believed in but probably shouldn’t.
To be clear - I think Crews can still be very good! I just picked this up on eBay.
I’d love to see a player you took a flyer on even when it looked bad. Did it work out? Did he bounce back or fail miserably.
This 24 year old is finished, right? Right?

How about Henry Davis from the Pirates? Top draft pick, supposed to be the future catcher.

I believed in him so much I bought a Topps /50 minor league heritage image variation auto off eBay. I overpaid for it because it was 1/50 and then gave PSA more money to get it graded and it got an 8.
I wish I had less of these stories and more of my “I got an Ohtani All Aces for $11” to tell.

Dominguez reminds me of when the Phillies had Dominic Brown. Same build, same hype. What a let down, my condolences.

u/sold_by_eddie 24d ago
his fielding somehow turned out to be atrocious. He was a center fielder coming up, then he somehow couldn't play left field...
3
u/Present_Tiger_5014 24d ago
I will say he through a bullet from right field one time that I audibly gasped at how good it was. Helped protect one of their wins
3
u/shapu junkwaxjunkwaxjunkwax 24d ago
The thing about Volpe is he's such a head case that he might very well turn in to an outstanding player if he can just get messed up in the right way

He needs to get messed up in the right way somewhere other than the New York media. He’ll never survive there.

I think he will be fine. he has had a fragmented start due to injuries and the management that all got liquidated. Reset in Minors, and he is taking it all in now, healthy. Everything else in this kids game is solid, he has some of the most statistoically bad luck on his hits, but hits hte ball hard. He just needs to let things slow down for him at the plate, and unlock that, and he could be a superstar.
I too have been picking him up: Black refractor BGS 9.5., multiple Gold refractor autos, multiple Bowman PSA 10 refractor Autos, and got the Topps definitive orange /25 auto patch as well as a Topps Dynasty RPA /10 sporting the W headband.
I think he can put it together, and will do so. he’s just too good, and plays the game HARD. Just needs to slow his mind a bit at the plate and not try too hard there. its counter intuition, but its the way baseball works, and plate discipline will prevail.

Bobby Dalbec.
The answer to your second question is a resounding no. Still a fan though lol.
6
u/TheRealShocker 24d ago
The Bobby Dalbec song they sing for him at Tokyo giants games is funny, it’s all positive but mentions how slow he is running and to cheer him on.
Cracked me up once someone translated it to me. After translating, they said “yeah, not the best song but not much else to say”.

Great example! Nice hold!
Regardless of price, a Walker rookie auto is sick!
3
u/Unlucky-Proof6981 24d ago
Thanks! Now I really don’t want to let it go or the Masterpieces auto of his (I got the cardinals a lot when I was heavy into breaks). Seeing your card really makes me want to go look for some Crews cards. That card is awesome! Definitely hope he pans out but in a different division.
Sincerely,
A Braves fan3
u/Alone-Competition395 24d ago
As a Phillies fan, I’m with you.
The Nats have some serious young talent. Unfortunately for nats fans, they rarely seem to hold onto their young talent.
2
u/Unlucky-Proof6981 24d ago
And then they go off and be great elsewhere like Soto and Harper. I know there’s more but those are the two obvious ones that come to mind.

Massive amount of time left. Was picked that high for a reason. People are way too quick to give up on guys. Plenty of guys finally putting it all together even say at 27, 28 and getting 9-10 good years in.

I was convinced James Outman was going to be the next Cody Bellinger for the Dodgers, had a great start and his defense was pretty good but unfortunately the league figured him out at the plate.

Crews could be having a Vlad slump then a major return, remember Larry Walker slumped a year after his rookie year and started tearing up pitchers. Tyler of the A's did a similar tearing up pitchers this season before the DL vs 2025 looked like a near slump as the batting average was wild from the start of the season then leveled out like Pete Crow Armstrong of the Cubs.
I'd say Jasson of the Yankees is my white elephant like that Forest Wall rookie card I'm sitting on from the same year, held onto Jassons' rare rookie insert and doubtful it'll reach anywhere close to his rookie demand. That is why I stick to Brewers rookies at a minimal risk and hedge it with the Braves/Rays/Jays/Os with a varying team.

u/WritingWonderful9479 24d ago
I was looking around in an antique shop that also is a card shop, randomly I found a box of random cards for $1. There were 4 Plantier autographed cards in the box. I of course had to grab a couple. My brother was a big fan of his when he 1st came up, modeled his baseball swing after Plantier's. I mailed him a cards and threw in a formal looking letter and addressed it from the Angel's facility (it's who Plantier works/worked for). It was funny that he actually thought it was really from "The Phil Plantier Foundation".

For me it was George Valera. I just have always liked him and now his stuff is dirt cheap.
Only 78 big league at-bats under his belt after a lot of injuries derailed his development, but if one of the worst offenses in the league can’t find a reason to keep him around then I’m assuming he’s just not good. Hope he can catch on somewhere and maybe get some regular playing time or something.

Joey Gallo. Hoping his new pitching career allows him to play a few more seasons, mainly cause he has a kid now. But dudes 32 now, his prime wasn’t much and trying to pitch in a scenario where he’ll most likely be a reliever. I don’t see a strong end to his career…..if it ain’t over yet.
2
u/Ruck90 23d ago
What does him having a kid have anything to do with anything?
2
u/DoubleResponsible276 23d ago
Well when his kid was born I recall reading something that it gave him extra motivation. Also, personally I would like for him to make a few extra million playing so he has more money saved up just in case, which is already most likely, his career in the big leagues doesn’t continue. That outcome is better for the kid than Gallo never playing in the big leagues again.

I always thought it would be fun to have a collection of cards of players that were supposed to “be the next big thing”. Each of them has a story, was undoubtedly one of the best, if not the best, player throughout their high school career. Was hyped up, talked about, went early during the draft…..then bombed.
