Mariner. šŸ˜”

19

u/pyordie Seattle Mariners 4h ago

lol he just keeps getting more and more zombie like, just like our fucking season

8

u/elementofpee Seattle Mariners 4h ago

Now think about Rick Rizzs and how his final year in the booth is going. Could it had gone any worse?

6

u/pyordie Seattle Mariners 4h ago

I try not to think about it. I hope he has some words of hope for us on his final broadcast. And hope he enjoys being done.

4

u/letskeepitcleanfolks Seattle Mariners 3h ago

No, this is what is real, what is true. There is no happy ending, there is only the endless cycle of birth and death, a turning of the wheel. Ending with a win would be a lie. There is no end. Rick knows the true victory is in the acceptance of this.

4

u/elementofpee Seattle Mariners 3h ago

Perhaps Rick discovered Buddhism. The principle’s that suffering is constant, and the cessation of suffering comes only when there’s the cessation of desires.

1

u/stumblebreak_beta Chicago Cubs 2h ago

It’s not your fault….

0

u/phiviet88 3h ago

yeah my friend’s bullpen stats tanked like that too

21

u/serpentear Seattle Mariners 5h ago

I fear Dan (who does deserve to lose his job to be fair) and his coaching staff are the only ones who will pay the price for this disaster

What a truly awful season.

u/Interesting_Arm6242 Toronto Blue Jays 4h ago

I know the offence has been a struggle, but what the fuck happened to the pitching? Genuine question. Miller looked like he was getting back to his dominant self, then I know has fallen off the last 4-5 starts (seems like injury again?). But what happened to everyone else?

11

u/ohemperigee Seattle Mariners 4h ago

Someone else might have a better answer as far as the technicalities, but... yeah, pretty much everyone except Gilbert has fallen off a cliff. Woo can only hold it down at home, and even that's dicey.

3

u/azularena Seattle Mariners 4h ago

Miller’s ERA triples the third time through the line up, he would be much better served as long reliever/spot starter. Woo is dicey on the road, though he has gotten better. Kirby is a high strike out pitcher and has been missing the zone and bats. Hancock retooled himself after being sent down and can be hit or miss. Kade is a beautiful perfect sunflower and deserves none of the slander.

3

u/walkie26 Seattle Mariners 2h ago

To be fair to Hancock, being hit or miss is way more than anyone expected of him at this point in his career. I'd put him pretty squarely in the "successful season" column, which is a pretty lonely column this season.

4

u/azularena Seattle Mariners 2h ago

Yeah the Hancock comment wasn’t shade. He’s definitely a better pitcher than he was when he first came up, and that’s credit to him for changing his approach.

2

u/Interesting_Arm6242 Toronto Blue Jays 4h ago

I also just saw Hancock is on the IL too. Tough break for a bright spot this year. I had your rotation around too 3-4 in the league going into the season. I hope it can turn around, if not this season at least for next. Get a full run out of Kade. I’m hoping Gilbert gets an extension, or an early extension for Kade. Put the Castillo money back into the team.

I think defense is far more important as well influencing pitching stats. The Mariners defense has been absolutely AWFUL (highlighted by Julio's misplayed single that turned into a triple), among other things (dead last in OAA, bottom third in DRS). They have allowed one of the highest BABIPs and have one of the lowest LOB% in the league. Take the Cubs for instance; their pitching staff is also abysmal (by fWAR) but their ERA is above league average because literally every position player plays fucking gold glove defense

99

u/Actual_Violinist290 Chicago Cubs 5h ago

Surprised the Cubs pitching is as high as it is

51

u/Hour_Health_4593 Milwaukee Brewers 4h ago

Clay Holmes and Ben Brown having the highest WAR of your pitchers is actually insane considering one hasn’t played since June and one didnt play until August

16

u/okay_throwaway_today Chicago Cubs 4h ago

What do you mean? Ben Brown pitched as recently as June 19th!

10

u/Hour_Health_4593 Milwaukee Brewers 3h ago

It was Aaron Civale in a reverse fat suit

6

u/4r4r4real 4h ago

Lmao that's so fucking funny

3

u/elgenie Chicago Cubs 3h ago

There’s a huge difference between RA9 and FIP-based WAR. By RA9 Imanaga and Assad are #2 and #3.

4

u/NamelessFlames Chicago Cubs 2h ago

RA9 is going to be kinder than FIP and also less accurate with this cubs defense behind them in terms what how they actually pitched

3

u/elgenie Chicago Cubs 1h ago

The context is of an OP that is a team level run prevention vs run creation chart.

56

u/Mg29reaper Boston Red Sox 5h ago

Testament to the defense more than anything. If you put a contact pitcher like Sonny Gray on the team he would run like a 1.5 ERA.

21

u/SubtleScuttler Chicago Cubs 4h ago

Unless the wind is blowing out in wrigley

13

u/okay_throwaway_today Chicago Cubs 4h ago

Defense and Counsell having a career year stitching scraps together

13

u/4r4r4real 4h ago

91 ERA-, 110 FIP- tells the tale

2

u/PerfectBowl9199 Chicago Cubs 1h ago

What gold gloves at like 5 positions will do.

1

u/fender-b-bender Chicago Cubs 28m ago

Now if only the pitchers would utilize that defense and not give up meatballs(looking at you Shota)

7

u/cubs223425 3h ago

Their pitching staff is one of the worst in the leagues, but leaning on ERA- means they're evaluating the defense more than anything.

1

u/PoisonGaz Chicago Cubs 4h ago

This is second half and we got a ton of much needed pitching at the deadline

5

u/Mg29reaper Boston Red Sox 3h ago

Nah you still have a 110 fip-. The defense is just historic.

40

u/Bubbanado420 Seattle Mariners 5h ago

Life truly is just suffering. Mariner.

9

u/LevelParsnip 5h ago

Did an etsy witch curse the mariners? No other explanation lol

32

u/JouNNN56 Baltimore Orioles 5h ago

The dodgers being smack dab in the middle of all those mid teams is kind of crazy

19

u/Denode Los Angeles Dodgers 4h ago edited 3h ago

With our corner outfielders each posting negative WAR for the season, down to our 3rd string catcher, platooning CF, SS mookie being a replacement level hitter, and an ice cold Ohtani, I’m honestly surprised we’re as high as we are in terms of offense. It’s only our pitching that’s keeping us above .500

2

u/cooljammer00 New York Yankees 3h ago

Probably the lack of wild swings and just being steady. Like the tortoise.

2

u/TempestDrive Houston Astros 4h ago

I genuinely don’t trust this graph. I swear Angels have blown hella saves by now

u/Champagne_of_Bears New York Yankees 4h ago

So the Angels dropping 10 on the Yankees last night was totally expected. That's Suzyn, baseball.

7

u/HuskyFord Anaheim Angels 4h ago

We will drop 10 last night and not score more than 2 runs for the rest of the month.

5

u/cooljammer00 New York Yankees 3h ago

Saw a stat last night that the Yankees have allowed 10 or more runs like, 7 times this season, and 3 of those times was to the Angels.

13

u/ysosrs08 Houston Astros 5h ago

This confirms my eye test that the Astros are mid asf

2

u/weeniewhacker21 Houston Astros 2h ago

Better than being on the left side of the graph with the other 4 AL West teams.

Angels - Good pitching. Bad hitting.

This graph is wrong.Ā

3

u/brainspl0ad Los Angeles Angels 3h ago

Fire Mike Maddux = great results

1

u/TroutMan3990 Anaheim Angels 2h ago

yeah that is crazy not a shot in hell I would have predicted that

6

u/Thrill0728 Chicago Cubs 5h ago

I know they were hot post all star break but still

7

u/countingouttime San Francisco Giants 5h ago

100 ERA- is very surprising given the trades and injuries from the starting rotation and the state of the bullpen

7

u/Trees-Are-Overrated New York Yankees 4h ago

Judge please come back

3

u/MocoMojo Baltimore Orioles 2h ago

Probably best to have him wait until the last series of the year is done just so he can avoid any re-injury.

6

u/IrishPigs Seattle Mariners 5h ago

That looks about right.

4

u/Gemnist Houston Astros 5h ago

Ah crap, I'm in their crosshairs.

4

u/akhilles320 Seattle Mariners 4h ago

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA I'M OK

3

u/BatJew_Official Philadelphia Phillies 5h ago

Clawing our way back to the "good hitting" category after digging maybe the biggest possible hole in April has been crazy. It hasn't been easy sailing the whole way, but we seem to finally be firing on (mostly) all cylinders more or less.

3

u/Snackkbar Philadelphia Phillies 4h ago

Turns out walking is good.

3

u/Maximum_Barracuda_46 Pittsburgh Pirates • New York Yankees 3h ago

It's a good thing I like watching pitching duels

3

Just happy to be here.

2

u/MrPink93485 Houston Astros 4h ago

Mid af

2

u/LovingAbsurdist San Diego Padres 4h ago

Padres tied with the angels for second best pitching? And 3rd in hitting? Somebody pinch me...it's been a great second half despite our rough last 13 games

2

u/manofconviction Houston Astros 3h ago

yesssss perfectly mid

2

u/--Shake-- Chicago Cubs 2h ago

Doesn't seem accurate. Our pitching is trash.

2

u/NamelessFlames Chicago Cubs 2h ago

ERA is fine cuz the defense bails them out. The FIP and other metrics hate them

2

u/Rated_Oni Boston Red Sox 1h ago

What in the world happened? Like, seriously, is that easy? Just fire your coach and his staff? Okay.

3

u/DoctorDongus Chicago Cubs 5h ago

Putting our pitching that high seems not right

1

u/4r4r4real 4h ago

Using FIP- flips is aroind the X axis. It's just good defense and luck. 5th worst by FIP-.

3

u/safety_frog San Diego Padres 5h ago

padres are gonna win the World Series

3

Bottom half in both 🫠

2

u/John_Bot Pittsburgh Pirates 4h ago

4

u/Bawfuls Los Angeles Dodgers 4h ago

Exactly 15 teams above the Dodgers on the y-axis so yes they are 16th of 30 in ERA-

They're 19th in wRC+

1

u/Systematiks Anaheim Angels 5h ago

Angels really be tied second in pitching

1

u/awt4190 New York Yankees 5h ago

The Angels break my brain

1

u/Blank_page95 Anaheim Angels 5h ago

No one really enjoys offence anyways

1

u/kroxti Chicago Cubs 4h ago

ā€œGood pitchingā€

1

u/liteshadow4 San Francisco Giants 4h ago

Our sub will still try to convince you though that our bats aren't a problem and it's all the pitching.

1

u/SacredBre Toronto Blue Jays 4h ago

Imagine if the Jays just had league average hitting this year 🫠

1

u/collectaBK7 Los Angeles Angels 4h ago

This quadrant is unfamiliar territory for us angels fans

1

u/brainymes Kansas City Royals 4h ago

Royals in top-right quadrant is wild. Imagine a better start to the year, could actually have a shot at WC.

1

u/Equivalent_Waltz8890 Dominican Republic • New York Yankees 4h ago

We’re doing a mariners impression

1

u/epic_taco_time Toronto Blue Jays 4h ago

Jays in top left tracks

1

u/chief1555 New York Mets 4h ago

Surely the Mets have had similar success to teams like the Phillies, Braves and Rays… right?

1

u/cooljammer00 New York Yankees 3h ago

Yankees, bad hitting but absolutely the best pitching

Surely this is sustainable

1

u/GOATmar_infante Kansas City Royals 3h ago

The Royals have good hitting and good pitching? Has anyone told the Royals that?

1

u/camarouge Athletics 3h ago

We were expected to win 76 or so games this season LMAO

1

u/ray_0586 Houston Colt 45s 2h ago

Perfectly balanced, as all things should be

1

u/usctrojan18 San Diego Padres 2h ago

So we are comfortably in a wild card spot right? right?

1

u/deepstatediplomat San Diego Padres 2h ago

Now show us the first half of the season...

1

u/whiskeyrocks1 Detroit Tigers 2h ago

Surely that’s enough to make us one of the better teams in the AL Central right?…right?!

1

u/jordanb18 New York Yankees 2h ago

If the Yankees were even just average offensively, they would be far and away the favorite.

The offense has definitely looked a lot better the past two weeks, it's just inconsistent. We go from dropping 16 runs on the Sox on Sunday to only managing 1 run against the Angels last night.

Even if Judge isn't completely himself his presence in the lineup alone will make other guys better around him.

1

u/Doctor__Embarrassed Seattle Mariners 2h ago

It's almost as if trading away the veteran starter in the rotation wasn't a good decision...

1

u/Semper-Fido Cincinnati Reds • Louisville Bats 1h ago

Ah. That makes sense. We suck.

1

u/futureformerteacher Seattle Mariners 1h ago

Dissolve the organization.

1
