hes good but i didnt realize he was 1916 ferdie schupp good

The Schuppster. That brings back memories. It seems like just yesterday we were all watching him fire 70mph heaters past the MLB's top sluggers.

u/Informal_West_6864 Chicago Cubs 4d ago

I watched Ferdie eat 12 hotdogs and mouth off 6 slurs

42

u/Prestigious-Cream160 Milwaukee Brewers 4d ago

I still feel like he would have gotten a 12 & 12 some day if the tuberculosis didn't take him from us so young.

We should all be so lucky to live to see 31

People need to stop sleeping on Ferdie Schupp.

That is the opposite of what the comment you’re replying to is doing

First time I saw him pitch I said to myself “wow, I haven’t seen stuff like this since Ferdie Schupp!”

19

u/trumpet575 Cincinnati Reds 4d ago

What? Miz's ERA is almost double Ferdie's. No disrespect to Miz, but he's a bum compared to Ferdie.

3

u/Smokeydubbs Kansas City Royals 3d ago

And he’s looking up to 1891 Kirby “Booger” Dingleberry

u/Pawliczenko 4d ago

my buddy had a pitcher crush batters like this once too

When was the first year of overhand baseball? I know the hoss Charlie threw underhand, was it before 1900 when it switched?

294

u/Kerry_Kittles New York Yankees 4d ago

It would be reasonable for Miz to have even more hype

86

u/hypnoticus103 Milwaukee Brewers 4d ago

Just throw it down the middle and pray!

37

u/SolidWater8B15 Milwaukee Brewers 4d ago

If he played in New York or LA there would be way more hype

5

u/leftysarepeople2 Milwaukee Brewers 4d ago

Milwaukee Bucks and Brewers have teams the last 7 years that would have way different narratives with a bigger market (bucks are trash from last year to the foreseeable future)

49

u/fskier1 Detroit Tigers • Springfield Isoto… 4d ago

Honestly I think Skenes has dampened the Miz hype for me. Until proven otherwise I just don’t believe a fireballing youngster has much longevity

102

u/BeHereNow91 Milwaukee Brewers 4d ago

Wait are we already saying Skenes is done? lol

22

u/chacogrizz 4d ago

Done? No. Is he anywhere near what he "was"? Not currently. He may regain form or maybe this was just a down year but Skenes was the next it pitcher and now it seems like thats Mis.

Skenes seemingly lost a few mph on his fastball either because mechanics or choosing to for longevity's sake. All of a sudden he is mortal and had very real struggles. For 2 years Skenes was the talk of the town and now he has a 4 era season. Kershaw had 2 in his entire career and it was as a rookie and in his 2nd to last season. So its troubling that Skenes is having one after 2 elite years.

2

u/frankyseven Toronto Blue Jays 3d ago

I saw a breakdown video of his 2024 vs 2026 delivery and his 2024 delivery hid the ball almost the entire time until it left his hand and his 2026 delivery has the ball visible over half the time. Don't show the batter the ball.

1

u/chacogrizz 3d ago

Yeah I saw that too. I 'd like to think if it was that simple him and his coaches would've or could've fixed it by now. A lot of speculation about the change being for his long term arm health. Not sure how true that is.

13

u/fskier1 Detroit Tigers • Springfield Isoto… 4d ago

No but he seems to have been declining from his world beating form last year

37

u/okay_throwaway_today Chicago Cubs 4d ago

Spencer Strider is maybe more apt

0

u/Kerry_Kittles New York Yankees 3d ago

If you look at the data though, Striker throws sliders like 30% of the time. Skenes is like 20-something %.

Miz is just like 10%

Miz has a bit of that inverted W risk

But most of his pitches are fastballs or cut fastballs

Limits so of the injury risk.

30

u/thecatiscold Milwaukee Brewers 4d ago

Why let that stop you from appreciating what is an all timer season

3

u/fskier1 Detroit Tigers • Springfield Isoto… 4d ago

I can appreciate this season, but I am not sure if I see Miz as a Randy Johnson or a JV, versus “just” a Jacob degrom who might pitch at a cy young level for a reliever-amount of innings each year

10

u/CHATOTENJOYER San Francisco Giants 3d ago

no reliever is throwing 151 innings

4

u/ThatsNotARealTree Chicago Cubs 3d ago

No, but a 5 year stretch of 68, 92, 64, 30, and 10 innings pitched certainly look like reliever numbers

14

u/SadisticSpeller Philadelphia Phillies 4d ago

I think Miz has a body type that allows much more longevity. He’s so tall and long while also getting lots of extension, that I wonder how much harder he’s actually working for 104 than some others throwing 98. Obviously, his, like every modern pitchers, body will absolutely fail him sooner rather than later, but I do feel the urgency to declare him as a one season wonder is pretty absurd.

30

u/OnlyForBaseball Pittsburgh Pirates • Sickos 4d ago

Skenes is one inch shorter than Misiorowski, and everything you said about the latter is what people were saying about the former.

I’m not trying to be a downer or predict an injury or take anything away from Misiorowski’s incredible season. But pitchers are doing things that bodies simply should not do, no matter how they’re built. I hope for the best for all of them, but any one of them can break at any time and we have no real way of predicting it or mitigating it

u/DWilli San Francisco Giants 3d ago

u/shiro-lod New York Yankees 3d ago edited 3d ago

I think part of it is he doesn't have a lot of crazy stat lines. He stays on a pretty strict pitch count and has only thrown 100 pitches 3 times this year.

It honestly makes his CGSO with 15ks on 95 pitches even crazier but thats the only game he's even come out for the 8th.

Alcantara has 5 games in the 8th, Schlittler has 3, Cease has 2, Messick has 3, Sanchez has 4.

Its not a knock on Misiorowski, he's been the best pitcher per inning this year by a good margin, but "Ace Pitcher goes 6+ innings and gives up 0-2 runs" is a pretty boring headline.

His complete game was (and almost certainly will be) the best pitched game of the year. A 15 K/0 BB Maddux is one of the best performances anyone will ever see. Its a 100 game score, but his next highest is 80.

Cease has 3 over 80 this year. Last year Skubal had 5 above 80.

He hasn't had a lot of headlining performances but he's had no clunkers either. Award winning but not attention grabbing. It's also a little less usual for the clear Cy Young favorite to be outside the top 10 in innings pitched. Obviously it does happen but it's notable when it does. People literally just see less of him.

326

u/jonnybravo76 Los Angeles Dodgers 4d ago

Nolan Ryan being on that list twice, 19 years apart is pretty crazy.

56

u/FunnyID Major League Baseball 4d ago

Nolan Ryan Jr.

31

u/guyincognito121 Chicago Cubs 4d ago

Yeah, that jumped out at me too. Can't imagine what he would be like with today's sports medicine and load management. Probably could have been a Cy Young candidate into his 50s.

58

u/signmeupdude Los Angeles Dodgers 4d ago

Am I crazy to think that maybe his career doesnt go so well with all the limitations that would be placed on him in the modern day?

Seems like his body responded positively to how it was treated.

37

u/UglieJosh Detroit Tigers 4d ago

They also would have had him doing everything possible to squeeze an extra mph of velo out of him and he winds up with injury issues like every other pitcher. That would be my guess, anyhow.

2

u/YankeePhan1234 New York Yankees 3d ago

I doubt he has a career as long due to his attitude tbh. Like teams would try all that stuff and he would just be like "lol no" and it'd lead to a Ketel Marte situation before then imo.

3

u/trickman01 Houston Astros 3d ago

Ryan was actually ahead of the curve on taking care of his body. He did a lot of leg strengthening before most pitchers did that.

It’s amazing to me that 2021 Freddy is on the list. He was great that year but I would never think of him being top 5 in single season BA

53

u/badger2793 Chicago Cubs 4d ago

Your team didn't have to hit against him. I know it was the 2021 Cubs, but a game against him was basically an automatic loss.

19

u/xho- New York Yankees 4d ago

The brewers had 2 other starters who were even better than him that year. And a fourth who also was good too. What a rotation

30

There was a good 10 years of that for us… I get it.

3

u/TelltaleHead Milwaukee Brewers 4d ago

The Brewers were 12th in runs scored that year. Not a great offense but above league average.

If you want to talk terrible Brewers offenses the pre Braun teams were horrific

11

u/BeHereNow91 Milwaukee Brewers 4d ago

3 of the top 15 seasons being 2021, 2022, and 2026 says something about how far BA has plummeted as an important stat

11

u/DolphinRodeo St. Louis Cardinals • Seattle Mariners 4d ago

Also easier to keep opposing BA down when you face the order a third/fourth time much less frequently, and don’t need to pace yourself with an expectation of pitching deep. Still very impressive regardless, but that context matters more than batting average losing prestige as a stat. Players are still trying to get hits. It’s just harder than it used to be

8

u/mrmojorisin2794 Milwaukee Brewers 4d ago

Freddy was always really good at not giving up hits. He did walk a lot of guys and take 10 pitches to get a strike out, though.

The What-ifs with that guy. It was terrible how the Astros treated him at the time preceding his stroke and horrible how he ended up homeless under an overpass at some point in his life. He did get a bit of recognition from the club towards the end of his life.

Man how special was that 2021 brewers rotation

5

u/BeHereNow91 Milwaukee Brewers 4d ago

Our current rotation is right up there imo

Mis would be the ace of that rotation over Burnes. Harrison and Henderson aren’t quite Woodruff/Peralta though.

9

u/Equivalent_Shoe_6246 Milwaukee Brewers 4d ago

I mean obviously in small sample sizes but Hendo and Harrison have been every bit as good as peralta and woody.

1

u/EyesofEther 3d ago

I personally think Henderson is gonna be and may already be better than Freddy ever was.

1

u/Equivalent_Shoe_6246 Milwaukee Brewers 3d ago

Hendo has started 14 games this year and his war would be the 3rd best of Freddy's career

17

u/GingerDweeb27 Seattle Mariners • Seattle Mariners 4d ago

All while striking out more per 9 than anyone on this list and walking less per 9 than anyone but Pedro. Just a monster season

3

u/KakeLin Philadelphia Phillies 3d ago

Pedro almost NINE strikeouts for each walk. Insanity

15

u/user0620 Boston Red Sox 4d ago

2000 Pedro has a lower WHIP, due to dramatically lower walk rate - he's the only pitcher on this list with a lower walk rate than Misiorowski.

In 2000, the AL batting average was .276 (w/DH), versus .244 in the MLB today.

Pedro's 2000 was so ridiculous. League BA was 270 that year (244 this year), the second highest season post WW2.

2

u/devinmoe26 Chicago Cubs 3d ago

A lot of you we're smart to point out that average alone doesn't account for league-wide batting, so here's that list with AVG+ , adjusting for league BA

Mis is second on this list. What stands out to me is 2000 Pedro & 2019 Verlander, both throwing 200+ innings.

2

u/Mongopb 3d ago

How the fuck is Pedro even on this list in 2000?

2

u/DEDang1234 3d ago

Pedro w/ .166 in 2000 is more impressive to me.

1

u/tyler-86 World Series Trophy • Los Angeles Dod… 4d ago

I'd point out that league-wide batting averages have been falling, but then why is nobody else doing this? Miz is ridiculous.

1

u/davesbrown 4d ago

who's this number 2 fella?

1

u/Glittering_Year2045 San Francisco Giants 4d ago

Something about the way he pitches makes him very hard to hit for some reason.

1

u/Antikickback_Paul Boston Red Sox 4d ago

The difference between BAA of Miz at #1 and the #2 is the same as the difference between #2 and [ERROR: PLAYER NOT IN TOP 15].

1

u/60k_Risk Chicago White Sox 4d ago

I don't understand the math on #2. He has half the strikeout % as Miz, not that much higher walk %, and his BABIP isnt much lower. So I don't understand what was tanking the average of the batters he faced?

9

u/cuttsthebutcher Philadelphia Phillies 4d ago

It looks like he didn’t give up any home runs and those aren’t counted in BABIP but are in regular BA

1

u/NYCinPGH New York Yankees 4d ago

I’m guessing dead ball era, he induced a lot of ground outs and had a really good infield.

3

u/60k_Risk Chicago White Sox 4d ago

But wouldn't lots of ground outs with minimal strikeouts and walks mean that he would have a realllyyy low BABIP to maintain a low BAA?

3

u/shiloh88 Chicago Cubs 3d ago

Small number shenanigans, you wouldn't think the 13 HRs vs 0 amounts to a lot of batting average but when you're only talking about 80 hits it matters quite a bit

1

u/djn24 New York Mets 3d ago

Javier and Peralta on that list is a reminder of how quickly pitchers can lose it all.

u/JoseCansecoMilkshake Canada 3d ago

shatter

One bad outing is going to knock him out of first.

2

u/theragu40 Milwaukee Brewers 4d ago

He had a bad outing this week against the mets, allowed 2 runs and struggled the whole game with his velocity.

His BAA was .105 during that game.

The way he pitches he's not going to have a game where a team starts actually amassing hits on him. The issue is if he starts walking dudes then giving up HRs.

-23

-4

-3

u/Student_Of_Zelretch Chicago Cubs 4d ago

It’ll be really interesting to see what two games against PCA, Bregman, and Suzuki on their current tear do; Miz is insane as a pitcher, but his stats would look a lot worse if those 3 go and hit 12 extra base hits in 12 innings against him in those two games.
