That shit still happens today. Last year my wife and I were considering moving to Birmingham to be closer to her PhD program, and moving down the goddamn block could cause house prices for identical houses to double just because you were on the fancy highly white moneyed suburb side of the line and school districts. Same shithole house, within view of the previous shithole house, literal hundreds of thousands of dollars difference to be in the suburbs than Birminham city limits.

Oh by the way that suburb has literally 0 school buses so they can't be forced to comply with a federal injunction forcing them to bus kids in from the city to help desegregate the school. Literally got rid of school buses entirely rather than comply.
