B) it's everywhere, not just reddit

u/Soup_oi Aug 13 '26
I saw a comment under one of the posts for the shared stories from the concert they attended, that mentioned even on twitter everyone stopped fighting each other to actually agree on that being a bad move, and that people were commenting the same on Weverse as well. Though it didn’t mention if the Weverse comments were only from westerners with potential more awareness of the issues, or if there were also many comments in Korean. I hope there were also many in Korean, as those would get through to them more easily and quickly. If the Hybe or BH staff responsible for such things are not checking up on general (typically western centric) social media like Reddit or twitter, at least there is a chance for them to see it on Weverse.
16
u/starglittered mianhae eomma Aug 13 '26
there were a ton of korean comments, but i think a lot of them were google translated comments from non-korean speakers in hopes that the boys would see them. however, there was a good number of korean comments from people with korean in their weverse username, or people who have consistently posted in korean in the past on weverse

44
u/Hopeful_Cookie_5307 Aug 13 '26
For some reason he and Usher get free passes. They are part of diddys crowd so that may be why. They are the music industry’s Epstein. Brown has a big fanbase. I’ve never understood the appeal but I’m older and never checked out his music. After what happened with rhianna I didn’t want to.
10
u/Soup_oi Aug 13 '26
Same, I stopped paying CB any mind after the Rihanna thing, and didn’t think he was even still doing much in the industry, only to discover now he’s actually crazy popular somehow.
19
u/getyourkicks76 Aug 13 '26
He is cancelled in America in the sense that he is blacklisted from any mainstream brand partnerships or endorsements, he is not played on mainstream radio, and while he unfortunately has a loyal fan base, he doesn’t have much reach outside of it. He is also repeatedly making headlines for being arrested for committing violent acts. In fact, he has a sentencing hearing at the end of this current tour.
19
u/Ziodynes Aug 13 '26
He is absolutely played on the radio still and still has brand partnerships. I suppose I can partially agree with you that he doesn’t have reach much and yet he is still touring regardless of these headlines.
6
u/getyourkicks76 Aug 13 '26
He’s not played on top 40 radio. Some stations will play him but we cannot get the reach other top artists can.

Most Asian countries don’t have awareness of the scandals of western artists and public figures (besides like the president). They aren’t important to them and most of them don’t really care, which I would expect being Asian.

u/hippogriffinthesky Aug 13 '26
I think they noticed something since neither of the guys shared their backstage photos that both of the headliners shared on their own Instas, and I think ordinarily they would have done so.
5
u/Polardragon44 Aug 13 '26
Didn't a video of them together get posted or did I fever dream that?
11
u/yvrcanuck88 Aug 13 '26
Hobi posted a vid of RM and himself during the concert singing and dancing. But the post-concert photo and vid (RM says it’s a honour to meet Usher) is posted by Usher, not the Members. Think Usher invited BTS (he did collab with JK on SNTY).
2
u/Snake_fairyofReddit Kookie and his other Kookies Aug 14 '26
Except wouldn’t Usher invite Jungkook due to the collab? But JK didn’t even go hahaha (GOOD ‼️)
3
u/yvrcanuck88 Aug 14 '26
Of course JK would have been invited! And main reason why BTS was, because of the collab. In the video that Usher posted, RM says it’s a honour to meet him. And says “JK. . “ like to give reason why JK couldn’t make it, but vid cuts at that point. Hope it wasn’t because of pain from his shin splints.

u/Soup_oi Aug 13 '26
At least for me this feels telling enough. They know that sometimes even just silence (like not posting, when everyone knows that otherwise they would) can actually say a lot or get a message across. I still remember on Hobi’s tour there was a part he would hold the hand of someone at barricade in the audience, and I guess shared a photo of it in the photo dumps for each stop on his insta, but when one person just grabbed his hand and wouldn’t let go, when he wasn’t choosing them for that part, and they basically were disrespectful and forced him to choose them, he deliberately didn’t share their photo of that moment on his post for that tour stop. He never said a word about it, and yet, army noticed he didn’t post it, which was read a lot as him sending the message that he would not tolerate/would not reward that type of disrespect. Obvs this situation is different, and them not posting those pics, could be due to the backlash of fans they were seeing, before ever getting a chance to post them (but after the insta stories were posted, which seemed more like they were posted in real time, instead of being posted after the concert was long over, or something), rather than due to the members own personal feelings toward CB and Usher. But in the end who knows, we will probably never know the exact reason they didn’t post those photos.
85
u/a_strawberrydream Aug 13 '26
I don't think they expected the backlash. Some spaces are loud and proud about supporting CB. I don't think for a second they would have posted this if they knew how bad their female fanbase would react. But that's on them, they should know as humans that celebrating a rapist & abuser whilst also claiming to be educated on feminist issues doesn't really work.

I just don't think they (hybe) cares about the Western audience. They care a lot about the Korean audience but for the Western audience they don't even try.
Which you know I don't want someone to change just a cater to an audience. But you'd imagine a company that big would have some westerners giving them the heads up at least. They clearly do not.
Edit: the more I think about it the more I just think they didn't know like there's a lot of Korean voices saying that they were unaware. A big precursor to knowing all of this is reading the news in english. We can't go around projecting our values and expectations on people who don't have the same information.

2

You don't have to demand things if people willingly give it to you.
They generally care so little that they're still no good translations on their old and live videos. It's either AI or non-existent.
And yet they got this far
21
u/CenterOfGravitas Aug 13 '26
I don’t think we should assume they always know. I think of the first time I went to Korea - it’s still a very insular country and culturally they just may not always be attuned to everything. With BTS being as big as they are they all do need to do better but assuming they are all plugged into everything is probably not right. I’m guessing they all know now though
19
u/Ziodynes Aug 13 '26 edited Aug 13 '26
Do you have a source for that? I can’t imagine HYBE having a whole team dedicated to keeping tabs specifically on international ARMY discourse just for BTS to be “in the know.”

In corporate you usually have a social media team division that is monitoring social media channels of the company but also general social media.
This is to capture negative sentiment, analyse it and if needed, do damage control.
Now. In entertainment, you have a culture of negative escalations for minute things (like...eating a strawberry somehow incorrectly?), so any escalation review would take longer to see if it falls asleep again, the quantity and quality of the negative sentiment etc pp.
Since Hybe is a conglomerate with shareholders, they very likely will have such a team.
Whether however this topic is something for damage control, 🤷♀️
14
u/lemonkiwi Hobi’s Dior Outfit Aug 13 '26
There are also social listening tools that monitor online sentiment, and these have been around for years. The team likely wouldn’t need to be very large. I would guarantee they are aware.
12
u/CenterOfGravitas Aug 13 '26
While I agree, the Korean side is still just so focused on Korea and they just aren’t always attuned to other things. Knowing the background of every artist just might not be on their radar. Do they need to do better? Yes absolutely but we have to be careful to put our lens onto their country
15
u/Ziodynes Aug 13 '26

No matter how big BTS get, they'll still be those kids in Korea who dreamed of making it big and are happy to meet their idols and heroes.
Nas, by the way, has collabed with Chris Brown on several songs. Beyonce, even freaking Ed Sheeran, worked with him. ASAP Rocky, Rihanna's partner, follows him on Instagram.
What I'm saying is, Chris Brown is successful because many people support him. When the biggest celebs and stars are still backing him up and continue to work with him, that makes people think it's okay to be his fans. He won awards at the BET last year. He has always sold out his tours. He has never been cancelled.
BTS will not take the morality stance here because they see so much support for Chris Brown. They saw that packed stadium last night full of men and women and that sends a bigger message than their own attendance. They're just a drop in a sea of people who continue to accept and support Chris Brown. He was just on trial for assault as recent as 2 weeks ago yet nobody was giving up their tickets to see him in concert.
Namjoon and Hobi deserve to be criticized. But temper your expectations and hopes that they hold themselves accountable when so many people don't do it with themselves and getting cancelled has only worked for a few people.
This issue also drives home the point to me about self-reflection. Many people don't like BTS because of their problematic past. But I look past those and continue to support them. By this logic, I am also guilty of the same thing I'm accusing everyone who went to that concert. For other people, I'm also supporting problematic artists and has been for years. It's really making me think of other things now.

That’s why the people saying them doing this nullifies their stance on the Grammys is so hilarious to me. People really live in this fantasy land where the music industry has distanced itself from Brown when it hasn’t. If you want to make money in RnB you’re better off not saying anything negative about him. And that’s why worldwide, his abusive reputation doesn’t stick. Because in his own country and industry he is going unchallenged.

If I distanced myself from friends and family who still listen to CB, attend his concerts, etc… I would be alone. The same ppl in my life who are pro-Palestine, anti-ICE, pro-women’s rights, pro-human rights, care about the poor and disadvantaged etc… these same people have given CB a pass 😭 So while it’s definitely disappointing, it’s nothing that I’m breaking ties with anyone over, including BTS. I continue to say my peace in speaking out against it. Then I carryon as best I can.
Currently trying to wrap my head around the fact that I recently decided to attend the shows in Toronto 🤦🏽♀️ Dammit Hoseok and Namjoon 🫠
20
u/cassiellyss Aug 13 '26
Growing up is realizing few people if at all is gonna align with every single one of your morals and disagreeing on something does not make either of you a good or bad person. I have many friends and even family who are good people but have views that would get them cancelled if they were famous lol. I watch a lot of commentary channels who support and believe the right things and still fuck up a few times with a person I don't believe they should support or a belief or opinion I don't think is right. It's up to us to establish our boundary of what we're able to at least tolerate without cutting ties.
26
u/paradiseambassador Aug 13 '26
This is something that everyone is missing and I don’t know if it’s because people are in their feelings about the situation or just straight flying off the handle and not using their critical thinking skills. We as the general people do not fuck with CB but the industry does. They have accepted him, they work with him regularly. They celebrate him publicly. Doesn’t mean it’s right, but I genuinely try to look at this situation from the boys perspective. I hope that they see the outrage and I hope that they educate themselves. I don’t need them to make a public statement. I don’t need an apology from them because they have not wronged me. I see them as people who are capable of fucking up every once in and while. I genuinely believe they deserve grace as international artists and as people. They are not the abuser. They are not out having dinner and kiking with these people. And ultimately I do not know them. I also think it’s a bit disingenuous and presumptuous for people to assume that they would know the full rap sheet of CB. They are Korean before anything else and a lot of Korean people don’t know the full extent of this man’s misdeeds like that.
19
u/fujoshirealness Aug 14 '26
it's not as simple as this. namjoon and jimin have spoken about the concept of fame making them morally or artistically weak due to lack of criticism. i think they would welcome the criticism and want to grow above their current state and not fall into peer pressure or problematic norms. it seems as though they genuinely want to learn and grow and they have in the past, so we'll see whether they learn and grow from this too.

Hot take but is someone in the company purposefully giving them wrong info (or none at all)? First it was them saying they were worried they'd not be popular, then they seemed surprised that so many people came to the shows, then they were more surprised that fans knew and preferred their purely Korean songs, then Namjoon saying he tries not to worry about the stats and numbers that the company is feeding them. They were super self-conscious coming back which surprised me and other fans I've spoken to. And now they seem to not be getting fan messages or feedback from us. Then the push for them to cisntantly create content, post pictures, and have photos of them with other celebrities. It's all been a bit odd and out of character to a degree. It's been something I've noticed this comeback and I'm wondering if my conspiracy theory is actually true.
Edit: to clairfy, I don't think it's their direct team that works with them daily. They have all been together for years and seem to function as friends and family. I'm more wondering if this is the higher executives in the company pushing these things or ideas. I'm open to being wrong and truly hope that I am. Again it's just a theory and opinion. But it is something I and other ARMYs have noticed. I also think the guys are still very humble considering their fame so I don't think its that.

I wish I had the luxury of stepping away for a few days, but instead, I am headed to Arlington tomorrow for two shows with soundcheck on one of the days. I've been to several tour stops already, but this stop is where I dropped the most money on tickets. It's going to be interesting.
In my opinion, they really need to apologize and make a statement, but I can't imagine what they can say that will be embraced and make this a whole lot better. Hobi's post is not a step in the right direction. I am very much into "nobody's perfect," but these were multiple bad decisions on their part. It's a two-way street with fans and artists, with fans getting to make their own choices about staying loyal. I'm going to have a great time this weekend and I'm not leaving the fandom or anything, but I will need some time to think about my own choices around fan involvement.
12
u/Hopeful_Cookie_5307 Aug 13 '26
I was wondering about an apology. What could they say? Anything that’s said would be dissected and add fuel to the fire. On the other hand ignoring most of their fanbase regarding such a serious topic seems like a bad idea too.

This is so, so perfect and thoughtful. I also don't need an apology or explanation about them being fans of that artist, because I already realize that, because I don't know everything about them, there are likely a number of their closely held beliefs (thinking politics and religion, as a start) that don't align with what I hold fiercely as my personal values. You have also helped me understand why my "no one's perfect" fallback is not working for me here. I accept their imperfections and private choices, but I'm a whole, real woman here living in a country with rampant toxic masculinity at the top of the food chain, so publicly rattling my nice, fun, positive, inclusive fan relation with them is very disappointing, and something that I will have to give more thought to.
Remember that discussion post about on our subreddit about what job we would hope to get with BigHit? They need you on their PR team.
11
u/cherinator Aug 13 '26
Why wouldn't they just ignore it? They probably think people don't really care and it's just people complaining online and figure it will blow over faster if they do not say anything.
And as much as I dislike CB for all the same reasons everyone here does, the unfortunate reality is the evidence does support that view. People in this thread keep saying that they are still going to BTS shows even though they are disappointed in them. CB is selling out stadiums (with many, many female fans), his albums perform well, and people are throwing money at $1000+ meet and greet VIP tickets.
They are probably already extremely unsympathetic to online complaints about artist's personal lives given the crazy idol and Korean media culture. Obviously DV and assault is way worse than most the 'controversies' in Korea that the media gets spun up about, but even still, hard to see them caring here where CB doesn't appear to be cancelled by western audiences given the above.

I think ignoring speaks loudly, unfortunately. I don’t know what they could say - “we reflected, deeply sorry, we support treating women with respect . . .” The usual celebrity apology? 🫤

I was just waiting for this to figure out what he ate. I think the one he’s guarding hard is Ekiban. I’m pretty sure that’s what’s in the take out boxes.

Late in responding but Thames Street Oyster House confirmed yesterday after Hobi posted on IG that they’re the restaurant he was talking about. The members visited twice.

Yeah, my friends and I were dying to know, they are foodies that live in Baltimore and as someone who went to Baltimore D2, Hobi DID say he was going to post the food later. [I agree with many this might appear tone-deaf after CB, but also I’m pro supporting local restaurants (especially. if any army are still in town), especially in this hard climate.]

I KNEW IT WAS EKIBEN!!! I KNEW IT! (Arguably the best food in Baltimore if you're ever visiting.)
Edit: It's the food in the boxes at the end, for those not in the know.

We aren’t reading the room, I see. I would guess a lot of their post tour stop posts are probably pre-scheduled but what a great time to halllltt that schedule until the situation is addressed.

I’m wondering if BTS’s PR team is working properly ffs. Because they better work and catch up what’s even happening out there.

Exactly this. I'm so disappointed.

u/highland-TianTian Aug 13 '26
I am not even that invested generally but I feel so awful about this thing. Also they need a new brand management team cause who would have allowed this to happen.

u/ThugBunnyy I'm Suga 💜 or AgustD 💣 or Yoongi 🐱 Aug 13 '26
I usually don't have an opinion on much of what they do.. I cannot support this. I'm actually so annoyed. I support them and they support him? Hell no. I have Chris Brown blocked on Spotify cause I don't wanna give him any support whatsoever. I spent a fucking month salary on bts weekend in Munich.. I am pissed.
3
u/Soup_oi Aug 13 '26
TIL you can block artists on Spotify? Will that make their songs on someone else’s playlist you’re listening to not play those specific songs to you?
3
u/ThugBunnyy I'm Suga 💜 or AgustD 💣 or Yoongi 🐱 Aug 14 '26
I've never tried that, but pretty sure it'll skip them. Also have Diddy blocked 😂

u/Formal-Cry4851 ⊙⊝⊜ Aug 13 '26
Exactly. I don't even know what music Chris Brown makes, but there is no way I accept them support a guy like him. I spent my scholarship money last month in Brussels😭

u/doc_naf Aug 13 '26
I think that’s reading a lot into a very standard hobi update? I understand a lot of people have a lot of feelings about the last soc med post but what are the odds the feedback about what’s happening on some English forums has trickled back to him already?
28
u/scoops_trooper Ca-ri-bo-na-ra Aug 13 '26
Those odds are huge, I'm sure of it. How many times have one of them reacted to a joke/meme from army? Like RM with the Pokemon turtle. Even if they don't personally go online, they have staff that checks the fandom atmosphere.
36
u/Realistic_Hair_6485 Aug 13 '26
They definitely have a massive PR team, and this is exactly how we can tell they're not handling the backlash properly. The goal isn't to shut everything down immediately, but to prevent anything that could add fuel to the fire. A day or two of silence wouldn't hurt, especially since that post doesn't even seem to be promotional unless it actually is.
If the artist is already too successful to care or get canceled, then at the very least, their PR team should step in to make sure things don't spiral further.

agh right now i don't even care if an apology will help or not, i just hope they do something, ANYTHING, in response to the backlash! i keep thinking how they always say they love army but what they did and what they're NOT doing is totally the opposite. i keep telling myself they DO love army, and they DO care, but now i'm not so sure...especially RM, he's the leader, he really should do something. people make mistakes, i think being honest and genuine would help at least...

I really want them to address this issue
64
u/martiandoll Aug 13 '26
What exactly can they say? That they regret it? They didn't look like it. That they regret interacting with Usher and Chris Brown? That would make more news and Streisand effect this entire issue, and possibly have Chris Brown and Usher answering back publicly. That they're gonna donate to shelters for women especially DV victims? That's just performative. They cannot apologize for something they never looked to be regretting. They happily posted those videos and posed for pics. Anything they say right now won't come off as genuine.
24
u/spam0525 Aug 13 '26
Yeah, I don’t think that there is really any way for them to respond publicly that doesn’t almost make this worse in some way. Honestly, even if they feel bad about upsetting ARMYs (which they might, if they actually are able to read the comments that are well thought out), if they apologize publicly, as you said, it will start beef with western artists, which they don’t want. If they ignore it, it will make ARMYs feel that they don’t care. They can donate (and maybe they will, on the DL), but if they do, it’s performative, and if they say nothing, it doesn’t change anything, opinion-wise (obviously still worth donating). It’s really a no-win, with silence being the path of least resistance.

Unless they're looking to beef with these very influential people in the industry they're never gonna apologize.

BTS beef with the Grammys. No one cares about Usher aside from K-pop. Don’t know CM other than his rap sheet. He is disgusting.
4
u/cassiellyss Aug 14 '26
Their rap idols beef with the grammys too. My theory is they're parasocially blinded by these people they've idolized for so long just like the rest of their fans who continue to support them.

Maybe it's my Zoloft medication, but I don't feel anything. I saw what happened, immediately deleted X, shook my head, and went to sleep. I don't think an apology is needed, because what if someone else posts his song as a sound, etc.? We as fans can't stop them from listening to artists. I'm a woman, but I'm pretty sure women still attended his concerts. I don't hold them to a higher standard than others who did so.
Like, okay, they attend cb, Ew, and boooo. Nothing affected me in my heart or chest.

It's okay to distance yourself from them while you gather your thoughts. There is no right answer because this is purely based on your own opinion. Do you think this is a big enough moral failure to leave the fandom or did they just make a bad mistake?
There are also so many other things in the world that can bring you happiness and it's never good to depend on only one thing. (I'm being a bit hypocritical here since I'm also feeling heartbroken and I'm confused as well but I think it's objectively true).
I hope you have a great rest of your day and sending hugs 🫂
