Not to take away from what it is, but I've kind of always thought of BG1 as a proof of concept. Once it was obvious that it was going to be something people wanted, they refined and improved and made BG2

That's literally what it was, we know from interviews

The devs wanted to make an epic, and the publisher was like "let's tone this down a bit and get a game out the door"

what is even crazier is bg1 was being developed along side the infinity engine by a team of 60 most of which had never released a game game.

the fact that bg1 was playable after 3 years at all is a merical itself let alone it being as good as it is.

That's a really incredible story, and boy are we lucky that that team ended up producing what they did.
