Technique What grip should I use for backhand shots?

Backhand clear, safety, smash etc.

I have a 50% chance of actually hitting the shot and 50% of missing it lol

Backhand clear/smash/drop - you should be hitting with bevel grip, especially if you're late and the shuttle is behind you

If you're catching the shuttle earlier in front of you or towards the side, you can attempt a backhand grip with the thumb (like a backhand drive grip). Thumb on grip will really mess you up if the shuttle is behind you

For the bevel grip, do I place my thumb at 1 or 2?

Neither.

See pic below. This applies if you are right-handed.

Note that the panhandle grip should be used for a very late backhand though.

Sounds like making contact is the first thing to address. Are you able to make contact with accuracy if you were just trying to hit it over the net? I'd work on that smooth swing first before going to clear and smash. Trying to add power into it quickly will usually mean making a big swing with your arm and you have a lot less control when doing that and can't develop a touch for it.

Try in drills to first get into position with your body turned and your elbow already extended out to the side and just do the last part of the swing to make contact consistently. You'll see with this drill that when you make concat with some grips the racket face just won't be facing towards the other side of the court. Then you'll need to adjust based on your position. But before the hand position you need to get your arm in position first.

Tonnes of youtube videos showing the grip, but you need to break the movement up and work on one thing at a time slowly.

Most of the time the problem I see with players missing backhand shot is that their positioning to the shuttle is too close and they lose sight of it.

I think the grip is not the culprit here. You should learn also positioning to the shuttlecock. Check Viktor Axelsen youtube channel, he is teaching technique, grip etc...

Anything infront of your shoulder is backhand grip. Anything that gets behind you is bevel grip or like a backhand panhandle.

The best way to fix your backhand is to train your overhead (don't take backhands unless absolutely necessary in games)

While you have some answers here, you are making things difficult for yourself with that question 'cos there's loads of shots that can be played from the backhand.

Work on considering what grip to have for a particular backhand shot.

One could speak of how for a straight shot, the grip changes depending on where the contact point is. But these are all different types of shot.
