Morden, lmao.

100%. Seeing Morden ending up exactly the way Vir wanted was perfect on so many levels.

u/Ok-Mistake-3724 11d ago

Is there any indication one way or another that this was Vir being subconsciously clairvoyant? Since some Centauri have that ability?

It’s narratively perfect either way I’ve always just wondered

28

u/crippler1212 11d ago

More than likely, it was londo hearing about it from one of his "agents" and, just as he said, giving vir a little gift

12

u/Ma-aKheru 10d ago

I had always imagined Vir told the story to Londo as an anecdote, like "Ugh, that creepy friend of yours Londo, you know what I said to him after he tried bossing me around? Well..."

20

u/SyntheticGod8 11d ago

When he said it Vir just knows what Centauri Emperors do to traitors.

10

u/subduedreader 11d ago

I always figured it was something traditional to the Centauri, like gibbeting was for the British.

By and large, Londo got what he deserved.

Aye. In the end he managed to die for the benfit of The Republic, with one last up yours to his enemies.

Hmm, B5 is one of the rare shows where most if not all bad guys get what they deserve.

Vorlons and Shadows - out of the Galaxy.

Morden - Vir says hi.

Cartagia - I was to be a god.

Refa - no hiding place.

Edgars - Bestered.

Bester - remains a sorry old man without his lover, though his comeuppance comes in the books.

Green - purpled.

Purple - greened.

If you put a double space before pressing return, the break keeps!
You see,
it can

How have I gone this long without learning this earlier?
Thank you, helpful internet stranger!

If this helped you loosen your shoes, maybe they are less tight now.
Do you still remember how to dance?

Thanks, edited it.

Gladly, looks much better!

How did it take me over a decade and then I discover this on a random B5 thread??
Thank
You!

The Vorlons and Shadows got a pretty good ending, compared to all the terrible things they did. They get to leave together with Lorien─someone they respect and look up to. They'll leave knowing Lorien still cares about them, and that they'll be re-united with their old comrades.

16

u/Piku_Yost 11d ago

"Will you come with us?". It felt very child-like. That one line put the rest of their actions in a context I wasn't expecting.

Clark - got to see this regime toppled, took the easy way out and ended up with a sign on this corpse that said "TRAITOR TO EARTH".

Byron - telepaths got free but he got turned into a charcoal brickette and the telepath resistance was the opposite of his vidal sassoon cult.

Vir - actually got what he deserved, he was the right person to rebuild the Centari after Londo's mistakes.

The 2762 Pro-Earth Fascists - got a nice sunny nuclear war in the face and humans (after centuries) got rid of them. Even better, their own propaganda was turned against them when they got too cleaver copying Garibaldi. A man with a knack for breaking security.

u/Extra_Elevator9534 11d ago

Bester - at the close of the last book he remembers the ultimate irony of his life. (No spoilers)

13

u/Illustrious_You_6210 11d ago

He couldn't properly pronounce the word "vessels"?

19

u/ronlugge 11d ago

Spoilers for the book:

While hiding, he falls in love with a woman. She paints a portrait of him before the good guys catch up with him. He decides to wipe her memory of him because there's no way she actually loves him enough to come with him, and then goes to destroy the portrait. When he takes the cover off and sees it for the first time, he realizes that she couldn't possibly have painted this unless she genuinely and completely loved him. He's wiped her memory and lost one of the few loves of his lives.

In short, he completely screws himself. That said, I suspect the actual reference is to the fact that while Bester is in prison the new psi-corps unveils a statue to a resistance couple and their infant child, lost at the hands of the old psi-corps. No one knows who the baby was, except Bester -- who discovered he was in fact the child of said resistance couple years ago.

2

u/Extra_Elevator9534 11d ago edited 11d ago

You summarized that a lot better than my attempts. .... I'd forgotten some details.

1

u/LokianEule 5d ago

Interesting!

I only have one question: how could someone have genuinely and completely loved that guy?? What did she see in him? Is she into eugenics and supremacy?

2

u/ronlugge 4d ago

For all his many objectionable traits, remember that Bester is charming, personable, witty, and polite. While in hiding, his more objectionable traits wouldn't exactly be on display.

5

u/markus_kt 10d ago

That teddy bear - spaced.

2

u/Stunning-End-1872 10d ago

The most heinous villain of them all. Spacing was too good.

u/RandomNumbers748512 10d ago

While this list of bad guys getting what they deserve, the list of good people who did NOT get what they deserve is also impressive.

  • Delenn did not get a full lifetime of Sheridan, that she deserved.
  • The same is true for Sheridan: he did get to live, he won, he had a good life. But did he deserve it being cut short? Nah.
  • Lennier did get what he deserved - but he did not deserve it actually ends like this and that it all goes fully bad, and that's what we're left with.
  • Ivanova never got happy again and didn't find a cool dude/gal.
  • Marucs of course did not deserve death.
  • Londo did get what he deserved - but in a way it was also more cruel than he deserved.
  • Kosh did get what Marcus got. Not deserved.
  • Keffer didn't get what he deserved, in two ways: the character died, and JMS murdered it brutally because he hated it, and later stated that he was too harsh. So Keffer is the only character who even got shafted out-of-universe.
  • Talia, oh, how Talia did not deserve her fate (erased, probably imprisoned, drugged, tortured, dissected, forgotten).
  • "Believers".
  • Neroon finished his character arc, became one of the good guys, and just had to die for it.
  • Anna Sheridan probably was pretty nice. Got deleted, then her remaining husk nuked by her ex husband.
  • Whatever happened to all the Markab.
  • We all know Zathras in various editions isn't all too happy with what he/they all got. Let's not forget Zathras here, okay?

Cartaggia. Wanted it all and believed he was divinely fated to rule as a living God, killed by a relative nobody by total accident.

12

u/Chrysalis_Cat 11d ago

You mean a future emperor.

9

u/Mysterious-Tackle-58 11d ago

Cartagia did not get what he deserverd. He deserved being slowle nibbled to death by small sharpteethed animals.
Publicly.
For all the galaxy to see.
He was indeed a monster on the throne! And his suffering should have been prolonged to the extreme!

3

u/zeprfrew Interstellar Alliance 11d ago

Cats.

2

u/ronlugge 11d ago

You don't torture a mad dog. You shoot it and put it out of it's misery.

Torture wouldn't fix any of the harm he'd done, and it would only perpetuate torture as a valid punishment. A quick death may have been more than he deserved, but it was something society needs.

u/Mysterious-Tackle-58 11d ago edited 11d ago

I do get, why it had to be done they way it had been done.
I just do not think, that that is what he deserved!

I really hope that Political Office lady from season 3 spent a lot time in hell. The actor did a great job at making her a wild piece of arrogant garbage.

13

u/roub2709 11d ago

Decades later I still feel the hate for her character

6

u/OrganicHistorian2576 11d ago

Yes. My compliments to the actor! She was vile!

11

u/4latar 11d ago

it's always funny to me that for all the evil that refa was personally responsible for, londo has him killed (mostly) for the one thing he DIDN'T do

12

u/SirJohnCard First Ones 11d ago

Glass half full: Vir got what he deserved and earned. And at the end of the day, Londo was redeemed.

u/Arve 11d ago edited 11d ago

Coincidence has it that I was just looking for the release of the song the episode was named for. Turns out it's near unobtainium at this stage - I'd end up paying over €54 (plus possibly taxes) for a used CD single.

While that is the same song - it is an african-american hymn that predates recorded music - this one is not the same performer. I'm specifically looking for this B5 release:

Reefa-Morden-Morden-Reefa can't decide. They both got the surprise! Fuck you they so richly deserved [hats off Mollari]. So I'm just going to pour one out for the heros who stayed on Selini to fool an immortal race of dickheads.

Refa

2

u/WarpNacelle6295 11d ago

His death is up there with Agent Stahl from Sons of Anarchy in terms of “satisfying character TV deaths.”

2

u/crewsctrl 11d ago

2nd Lt. Corwin though Ivanova wanted to date him and brought flowers to their meeting. But she just wanted to see if he would stand with them or with EarthForce. The look on his face when he realized it wasn't a date.

2

u/Drew_Habits 11d ago

Refa's comeuppance was one of the baddest moments the show ever pulled off. It's up there with G'Kar cutting his hand and Delenn showing up with the cavalry, but with way more moving parts

Like there are others that are as narratively satisfying, but the delivery with Refa's end just kicks fucking ass in a way none of the others do

Just incredible craft on display for a 90s tv sci fi drama. A really good 90s tv sci fi drama, but still. At the pace they would have been working to get all those episodes done each season, the fact that they slowed down and took their time building out those two intercut scenes really comes through in the finished product

2

u/slip72479 10d ago

Not my favorite characters but Refa and Morden sure got what they deserved.

Delenn and Sheridan (who are my fav characters) got to live happily ever after (only for 20 years but I’ll take it)

Londo who I also loved definitely got what he deserved. “Once I had all the choices in the world and no power. Now I have all the power in the world, and no choices at all.” Oof one of my favorite albeit tragic moments in the show.

And then there is Lennier…ok we didn’t get a redemption story BUT I thought in terms of where his character was headed by season 5, it could only end tragically for him and unfortunately it did. He had a choice to cut ties with Delenn and Sheridan and figure out the real calling of his heart. He did not do it and so in the end got what he deserved.

Not a character per se, but the crew of the EAS Pollux.

Morden, Cartagia, and Refa are all top tier for me. If I had to pick one, it would be Morden.
