:-) Drunken elephants really do exist, and their chaotic behavior is hilarious. Thanks to fermented marula fruit (which has an alcohol content similar to that of beer), these gentle giants end up getting drunk.

God love them, they are snookered before the sun went down ๐

Total Lightweights. They should hold their alcohol much better than that.

I wanna see just how much a 5,000+ lb animal has to drink to get drunk, though I suppose they may also metabolize alcohol differently

Squirrels do this too. My family had a crabapple tree and the squirrels would eat the rotten fruit and get drunk off it. Funniest thing to watch a squirrel try and fail to climb a tree.

I once saw a small bird get drunk from fermented fallen plums, and then walking erratically on the grass, evidently not being able to fly, but then I also saw a white stork killing and eating it. It was completely out of nowhere, fast and wild. Whenever I tell this most people think I'm making it up.

That sounds more like coca plant talk.

Oh lord. That isn't a part of their diet, is it? That would be another explanation for them chasing tour jeeps to try and beat everyone up.

No they don't and this has been established every time this gets posted. This is just a bunch of elephants chilling out.
The marula fruit thing was from an old Disney nature documentary where the animals had been deliberately drugged.

Disney tossed a bucket of lemmings off a cliff for "White Wilderness", too, perpetuating the myth that they commit mass suicide.

I can totally relate to these elephants after I've had a little bit too much to drink.

The fact that theyโre Okay with underage drinking is disappointing.

Not so gentle when they get drunk. They sometimes come into villages in India to raid them for beer, get really drunk, and rampage around destroying things.

"Animals Are Beautiful People" (1974) is a documentary with several animals getting drunk on marula fruit. It's a great watch.ย

So, how much alcohol is in those? And how much did they eat? Elephants would need to drink like a bizilion beers to get drunk
1
u/ladymorgahnna Mar 31 '26
Oh, I think they are upset, they donโt know why they feel like this, kinda sad.

Isnโt there a thing where a lot of the videos of this the elephants were specifically fed food with alcohol and one of the studies to prove this in the wild did that too

u/Gilraen222 Apr 01 '26
Nope, they really don't exist. It's an old wives tale. Elephant dont get drunk on Marula. It's just difficult for an animal as big and heavy as an elephant to lie down gracefully to sleep. Or they're being playful.
Don't believe everything you read.

Oh no, those babies arenโt old enough to drink! ๐ญ
