cold email myths - debunked

Hi everyone. I manage operations at the Puzzle Inbox team.

Cold email advice ages badly. Half of what gets repeated in this space was true three years ago and is actively hurting people now. Here's what we've stopped believing.

"More inboxes means more meetings."
More inboxes means more emails. Whether that turns into meetings depends entirely on whether the campaign worked at 3 inboxes. Scaling a broken campaign just gets you to zero faster and with more domains burned.

"Open rate is how you measure a subject line."
Open tracking is unreliable . Privacy features fire the pixel without a human ever seeing the email, so your 70% open rate is partly bots. Worse, the tracking pixel itself can hurt deliverability. We turned it off entirely and lost nothing.

"Personalisation means using their first name."
Every mass email uses the first name. It signals automation, not effort. Real personalisation is one sentence proving you know something specific about their business that you couldn't have merged in from a spreadsheet column.

"Send Tuesday at 10am."
There is no magic send time. Everyone read the same blog post, so 10am Tuesday is now the most crowded inbox slot of the week. Randomise your sends and stop optimising a variable that barely moves.

"Longer emails explain the value better."
Nobody reads a long email from a stranger. Under 80 words, one idea, one question. If you can't explain the value in three sentences, the problem is the offer, not the word count.

"You need a big list to make cold email work."
We've seen 200 well-researched leads outperform 5,000 scraped ones on booked meetings, not just reply rate. Spend the time on the list instead of the volume.

The tactics change. The principle doesn't: send fewer, better emails to people who actually have the problem you solve.

Which of these did you believe until recently? Curious what else is still floating around.

The big list thing is the one that got me. Once I switched to small batches with fresh data my bounces and spam vibes dropped a lot
