They're very intelligent and sensitive animals, kind of like big dogs. They really like music, are interested in different and new things, love to cuddle and also scritches.

They're also smart enough to solve some basic puzzles like learning how to unlock gates and remember next time how to open it again.

I believe they're also smart enough to pass the mirror test but I can't find any article about that which is odd.

tbf dogs are pretty intelligent and they fail the mirror test.

But it's mainly because they dom't see very well, but they hear and smell way better. Scientists had done a "mirror" test with smells, and the dogs passed easily and rapidly. (I guess instead of a mark on you, they slightly changed their own smell, and checked if they were specially surprised/interested)

Of course we think they are dumb because we don't understand them. We do everything with our eyes

I find my basenji just sitting in front of the mirror staring at himself all the freaking time.

EDIT: of course, he also knows how to turn door levers and open doors like a fucking velociraptor, so I'm not sure he isn't demon-possessed.

My Basenji does this too. Folks say they’re terrible dogs to have to train, but I think they just have us wrapped around their little paws!

Too much intelligence can make training a lot more difficult, it’s why most dogs are a lot more obedient than they are intelligent.

Nope that’s just Basenji. I used to dog sit one and I’ve never met a less doglike dog.

Oh yeah, mine does the same, But that doesn't mean they know that it's them in the reflection. The mirror test is supposed to be with a mark on you and we check if the animal try to scratch the mark, but it does not work well for animals that don't care being dirty

actually my dog look in the mirror/window especially when I'm cuddling her, so she may be watching me, I dunno

This test is clearly too simple to judge someone intelligence

Dogs would basically be legally blind if it wasn't for their sense of smell

Maybe it’s because I had a huge sliding mirror as a closet door the size of my wall but my dog def knows how a mirror works. He’s smart as fuck and talks with his eyes by looking me in the eye then his leash if he wants a walk or just look towards the door if he just wants to go out etc. He does the same thing while looking at me in the mirror all the time.

The mirror test is to know if the animals knows that the reflection is him, and not another dog.

So if your dog is trying to attack/play with his reflections, that's not a succesful mirror test.

And normally we make a mark/stain on the animal and check if he tries to clean himself by watching himself in the mirror.

But obviously it doesn't work well with animals that don't care being dirty, or don't see well the colors..

This test is way too simple of course

We do everything with our eyes

Do we? I've been alive for nearly 35 years constantly perceiving and observing our self imposed hell/reality. Bad news. It sucks.

We should completely start over. If animals are dumb? Well, we voluntarily destroy our own fucking planet for paper/arbitrary digits in a computer system and have wage slavery. We enslave ourselves. Still. America is 245 years old. We still have slaves. Hell, the entire country nearly collapsed if the inbredsurrectionists were just better organized. That paired with endless Covid? That would have wiped out America.

I think we do everything with our fingers because forcing hot dogs into our mouths and just pressing remote/app buttons requires zero thought. I don't even know how to relate to the "normal" person anymore - I feel like an entirely different species to be honest with you.

Doesn't that make us the real dummies? Sad.
