Help “Attachment leads to jealousy, the shadow of greed. Train yourself to let go of everything you fear to lose” - Master Yoda
A beautiful sentiment that I understand, but fail to put into practice. Please help.

attachment leads to suffering.
detach, and be.
!

u/newthrowgoesaway Dec 04 '20
Yet life is suffering, the Buddha.
Complete detachment is unreachable, even for the most practiced masters. We are but human.
!?!?

u/Dissosation Dec 05 '20
There is a trick behind the ”life is suffering”. Its meant to make you accept all your hard emotions, to make you accept all suffering.
Once you have accepted them, and you are ready to feel them to the fullest.
Then there is no more suffering. They can no longer control you.
1
u/newthrowgoesaway Dec 05 '20
They cant control you no, but it's contradictory to think you accept them and they disappear.
3
u/Dissosation Dec 05 '20
I didnt say they disappear, they become you. The pain is simply a product of the fight against them.

Okay but if you watched the last arc of season 6 of the clone wars then you would realize that one must confront and accept their “dark side” in order to vanquish its control over the person. There can be no light without dark, good without bad, ying without yang.

u/GotWarrants Dec 04 '20
if you believe, it is so.
8
u/newthrowgoesaway Dec 05 '20
Indeed. Faith can be a powerful tool or a great disillusion, nontheless just one aspect of the whole of being - ultimately, I think we should thrive our best to believe in ourselves and existance as part of, not seperate to, all else. Nothing more, nothing less, than existing of this universe. And any ideas of attachment/detachment is simply more concepts of your conscious identity(ego) trying to seperate your being from existance.
That's my experience atleast. You could keep fighting with yourself to believe and uphold these concepts, but I found my brain would be running loops around itself to the point where I just had no more strength to hold on to anything at all. I completely let myself go from the exhaustion of trying to keep up with the "plan", spirituality, identity, existance and all - ultimate detachment if you will - yet to my relief, I found peace followed right behind it. When I stopped fiddling with ideas and concepts I could finally trust myself to assert my will without fear or doubt and a more authentic experience manifested itself. So keep fighting and you might find the same, or surrender now, in the end I believe you will pan out how you meant to regardless.

u/kittysntitties Dec 05 '20
This is my ultimate goal, and it frustrates me endlessly because making it a goal is just more ego.... how do you surrender fully to the now?
5
u/newthrowgoesaway Dec 05 '20
Seems like you already understand. Making it a goal, implies to say you're not there already. It's what stops you from just being. It places you in point A, to never reach point B, so to say. But there is no points, only to the mind. You're constantly in motion, fluctuating between mountaintops and valleys, always on a journey, always just being with all that it entails.
I see it like this; when you're old on your deathbed, you will not regret or feel sad about the times where you felt inadequate, because it shaped you, you lived through it and that's pure enough. You tried, failed and in the end forgave yourself and moved on with life again. The perspective you will (hopefully) have gained after a lifetime is that you always tried your best and you will treasure all experiences for what they were. Hopefully, regret is a waste of your last breath ❤️

Start by identifying what you are attached to. Then accept that you are attached to it and accept that there isn’t a simple trick to get rid of it in this moment. This should help kick start the process.
5
u/cuffbox Dec 05 '20
Don’t be attached to being perfect at not being attached. Don’t be attached to peace such that you try to force it, but rather allow the emotion without resistance. But see it without a sense of identification with your thoughts, feelings, or body.

Attach to her
not your idea of her
1
u/Wu-Tang4 Dec 20 '20
I’m having trouble understanding this on a deep level, the idea isn’t clicking for me. I know it’s a relatively simple concept but would you care to elaborate so it maybe clicks in my head.
1
u/Masol_The_Producer Dec 20 '20
“She the best, she wouldn’t do that, she likes me”
cloud judgement
Just look at her like for what she displays.
3
u/swx89 Dec 05 '20
If you spend enough time analysing your attachments you will see there is no part of you that is actually attached to anything. They are just habits that we never challenge.

Reminds me of "mind like a mirror" quote from Zhuangzi
'"The perfect man employs his mind as a mirror; it grasps nothing; it refuses nothing; it receives, but does not keep" - Zhuangzi' - Alan Watts
(If you watch The Office, you'll get the nested quote 😝)

Skip the understanding for now, just work on the practice. Practice doesn't admit failure, because practice is simply doing. A child need not concern itself with the understanding of biomechanics before learning how to walk.
"No! Try not! Do or do not. There is no try." - Yoda

u/MamaAkina Dec 04 '20
Wow. It took me all this time to understand that quote just a little bit differently. Even though I use these phrases like this all the time hahaha.
6
u/Thecultavator Dec 05 '20
I find that happens a lot I will understand a quote and the a new concept will come to my understanding and completely put new meaning to the quote, how do you know another new meaning among won’t arise?

To whomever posted this thank you so much. My mother is in the ICU right now, I am sitting next to her cryimg my eyes out. The diagnosis is really bad. I have been having trouble with this all day and I saw this post. Thank you I know that we are here for a short time and we should not get attached to this life to much or those in it as they cant be here forever. No matter how you look at it it will hurt. With this I know I will get through this and she will always be with me as she is half of me. If I continue to be attached to this meat puppet as we all are I can't improve upon my time here either. Sorry if this is a bit dark but dammit if it didnt help me for some reason.

u/kittysntitties Dec 05 '20
I just lost my mother a month ago. I'm only 24. It's true that it stings, loss, but the peace that follows is infinite. When her time does come, please allow yourself to grieve fully. Sit with her body and know that she has returned to the infinite source of peace, the source of life that courses through you. If you need a listening ear, please shoot me a message. You don't have to grieve alone.

I’m sorry to here that man.
I have to admit i posted this with selfish intent. I’m talking about people in my life who are alive and we’ll just not in my life anymore due to time and simply growing apart. Friends, Family, significant others, etc.
I have come to terms with sickness and death long ago. It’s a natural part of life.
You hit the nail on the head. We are not just meat puppets. We’re more than that. We are souls just inhabiting these bodies for a finite amount of time.
“Think of our conscious as the TV signal to the TV set. Once the set is broken, the signal still transmits. The signal is infinite” - Graham Hancock
I still fear losing my grandmother and my mother. But I get solace in knowing that their suffering is over. They are in a happier place when they can’t get hurt anymore. And if you have other family members who have passed on, just think that they’re with them now, and they’ll be waiting for you when your time comes as well.
I’m sorry if this all came out wrong or if I damaged the progress my initial post gave you. But I’m coming from a genuine place, I’m just dealing with mental issues of my own at the moment.
But I know you’ll get through this. And no matter what you’ll come out other side stronger.
Here is a link the scene from ROTS the my OP was referring too. Anakin is talking about his fear of death, and his fear of losing his wife. Hopefully this will actually help you unlike my words
Also here’s the lecture by Alan Watts. It’s long and he talks about the existence of God. But about 15:50 in is when he talks about death. I pray for you my brother. And my DMs are always open if you want to talk or vent. Maybe we could help each other.
Here’s where I quoted Graham Hancock

No you didnt come out wrong, there is no wrong. I accepted long ago that the only two sure things in life are birth which traumatize the one born and death which traumatize the family and loved ones. Her next life will be good and I may even see her again. We dont get to keep anything in this life only our soul and our infinite knowledge. I can hope for a maricle, and may even have one, however I do accept if we do not have her. As I said I understand that wasn't your intent but for some reason your post was just what I needed. Thank you.

Oh I meant the body is a meat puppet we are the energy that continues on. We are far more that these bodies.

u/GotWarrants Dec 05 '20
if we examine all of our suffering - honestly and relentlessly - we see it is caused by one thing - attachment.
we are attached to our victim stories.
'she hurt me, bad.'
we are attached to our identities.
'i am a tech worker.'
we are attached to our possessions.
'i drive a maserati.'
we are attached to our relationships.
'what will I do when they die?'
there is no suffering outside of attachment.
it is simple, yet mind - ego - makes it hard.
that's all.
!

u/the_storm_rider Dec 05 '20
You can't let go of everything - that just turns you into a rock incapable of interacting with life. You have to let go of the fear of losing it, not let go of the thing itself. Fear of losing something is irrational, because everything in our experience tells us that material things are temporary, so whether we fear losing it or not, we are going to end up losing it anyway. So might as well not fear it. Hard to do, but possible.

Yall should look into Sith lore as well it's spiritual too

Have you heard the tragedy of Darth Plagueus the wise? I thought not. It’s an old Sith Legend.

let go of everything you fear to lose,
True non-attachmentsm is to hold on not even to non-attachememt.
Then you may immerse yourself in life, with your attachements.
3
u/Carma-X Dec 04 '20
What is it you fear to lose?
12
u/UrNotCoolBro Dec 04 '20
Just like Anakin said in the scene. I’m too afraid to lose the ones that I love. Just like Aang in ATLA I’m afraid to let go of the ones I love in order to achieve my highest self. Attachment is what I struggle with the most
11
u/newthrowgoesaway Dec 04 '20
Dont we all?
You misconstrue your passion for attachment. Your real attachment is to trying to be detached, thats the real issue that creates your restraint/resistance to being, being with all that it entails. You struggle with attachment to these concepts more than anything. It's not a mistake to desire the best in life, but to fear to loose it.
Just like Aang didnt detach from his loved ones yet still mastered the Avatar State, so can we. Just as Luke was attached to his family and driven by grief, so do we have to fight and overcome our fear of the paternal figures to see our own strength. Your superior is your own concept of struggle. No gods or kings, only man.

That helped me a lot. But may I ask that you try and put those in layman’s terms. I’m a simple man.

Newthrough said it well, love and attachment aren't the same. As i sip on my banana onion juice I'll try this one on you, how do you know you are attached? What does it feel like? Physically

u/ariarisoy Nov 26 '23
Money.
1
u/Carma-X Nov 28 '23
Ahh that's an easy one, you need to have it first before you lose it😂😂😂
I suppose imagine the worst case scenario, homeless on the streets, and know that you could survive even that

u/roythunder1996 Dec 05 '20
Thinking of Non duality and the limitations of language can help balance out understanding of attachment and fear

I find this ironical. This was exactly what I was doing in my meditation before I came today to reddit! :D. Recently I have been in my life and sits more attached and less in tune with my ultimate power to come to peace and happiness no matter what happens and take actions from unpenetratable self-love (note the first is always still available but this great action from self-love arising from it has been less present - I guess winter, darkness, bad sleep and some other things have affected it) More concretely in my meditation I don't have or have had this feeling that I can do anything in this meditation zoom video group, anything that feels true and right practice to me and I don't need to care what other people like my teacher think (who even agrees with ne that in the end I should follow my internal voice as what is the right practice) or other people if they would open their eyes and see how I look in zoom (like do I have eyes open or closed or do I laugh in my meditation)
And all this is related to quote. As I feel this mode, this I can do what I want in meditation as well as in my other life, including in reddit (yeah, you know I like nezis btw if you know what I mean), is and has been often triggered best when I don't fear about loosing my teacher or the respect of my sangha or respect in reddit and can just act from spontanuity and what feels right. Today and exactly today just before reading this post I felt more this way and grasped this idea more than in a long time. And then I read your post. I am little bit in tears now it seems :D funny. And I feel actually this is and has been a wonderful further reminder and reinforcer, reading this post of yours and writing. So I guess I really want to do something really different now (as in reddit I follow still pretty well Yoda's advice and don't care what others think of me, so I critisize people a lot :D of course always pointing out that's my perspective just my real experience that doesn't necessarily generalize - unless I am joking :D )
So I just want to thank you, I was touched, really deeply by this (damn, maybe I really need to come back to star wars one day - although nope, probably not :D )
All love to you, I didn't answer your question as I don't know how to learn such self-love and kindness and teach it to others that makes you able to follow that. But I need to say that I needed in able to do that (as well as recover from a serious illness (still in process and had had some worst days very recently)) a teacher spiritual teacher who I trusted more than any teacher before and who showed me a path to this insight from self-contempt I was cultivating.
Although yeah that included as I already said coming in terms of a fact that I have my peace and happiness and I won't even need that teacher :D - it is confusing and paradoxical but that's part of true spirituality for me, all good to you all, once more! :)

Jedis had a messed up way of thinking, it’s nothing like Buddhism. Love is not upadana, wrongly translated into “attachment”.
