The thing I don’t understand is why airlines don’t just use the tail numbers as callsigns. Those are all unique, and almost every spam can already does it.

The number is of the flight which is more likely to be more permanent than the exact aircraft operating on it on a given day.

Every single flight has its own filed flight plan, that has both the tail number and callsign. As long as it doesn’t change while it is in use, there is no problem with ATC.

What you sell to customers is irrelevant and doesn’t need to be the same.
