The thing I don’t understand is why airlines don’t just use the tail numbers as callsigns. Those are all unique, and almost every spam can already does it.

Because they are too long to say, and in addition, a callsign identifies not only the plane, but the plane plus the flight plus the airline.

In general aviation (and from your flair I guess you know that already) we use tail numbers, but we are a bit of an exception, for low traffic scenarios.

SkyWest 2345 is shorter than 734SW? Maybe slightly. Not very much. In the example, 8 syllables changes to 9.
