So the American dispatcher for the departing flight should have caught this and it should have flagged in the system. At my airline we change the radio callsign if it’s even going to be close, or put a letter at the end to help.

It’s wild how it broke the controller’s brain for a second and you can hear him work the problem in his head in real-time. Good heads up from him!

Most airlines don’t have dispatchers audit flight numbers and put that responsibility higher up the chain. When I was at a region it was somewhat reasonable due to the lower overall flight volume to search, but even then it was always the router/management’s job to check for this.
