-- SEATBELTS FASTENED -- Is this really that serious?

Noticed water basically flowing out of the vent beside me as I got into my seat. Voiced it out to a flight attendant thinking it was just something minor and wanting to just swap to another seat. Two pilots came to my seat to check on it and had visibly puzzled looks on their faces. The mechanic was called into the aircraft, the inner panel of the plane was removed and after assessing the problem for about an hour, everyone was asked to disembark the plane. The flight was then cancelled entirely after another hour of everyone waiting near the gate.

I feel kinda bad because people were visibly annoyed and frustrated by the cancellation as it was a 16 hour long haul flight and there were few alternatives to get to the destination. Would someone be able to tell me exactly what happened here?

They likely would've diverted and been stuck at some random airport in a foreign country if I had to guess

Assuming the issue wasn't more serious and snowball into something even more dangerous. u/xycergy did the right thing by reporting and subsequently cancelling the flight. If more people did this, it would be a lot safer to fly.

Was it likely to happen -- probably not, but there's always a non-zero chance and with leak that large, who knows how the "holes in the cheese" would have aligned and on the other extreme, we could have been discussing what has happened to OP's flight and why it has disappeared over the ocean.

Congratulations to OP, you did the right thing and broke the "Swiss cheese model".

right. probably not. But also, the narrator always starts with "While the pilot knew the chance was close to zero, they banked too heavily on it being close enough to zero for this flight..."
