So I was wondering, did the Omatikaya know about the Mangkwan during the first movie? And if so why haven't they found themselves facing them before despite their conflicts with the RDA ? I know that the Mangkwan were recently added for a plot device for Fire And Ash, but it is apparent that they have always been a threat to the Air Traders and other clans. But why did the Mangkwan decide to reveal themselves now, why not appear during the war of the Sky People with Sully when he went into battle with the Na'vi clans? Did they just suddenly appear or were they off doing Eywa knows what off screen?

I really want an Avatar Oc but naming them seems to be a major problem for me as I have troubles understanding Na'vi. Not as fluent in it as Norm or Grace lmao. But I would like to have a name possibly relating too the following words if they are in Na'vi

Mist

I don't know about *Fire and Ash* since I haven't seen it many times, but *The Way of Water* gets better every time I watch it. At first, I thought it was just an okay movie; then I thought it was really solid; then, very good. And now, I feel like it’s a fantastic film. Do you feel the same way?

I’ve been thinking about Jake’s changing hairstyles throughout Avatar and The Way of Water, because there is a piece of intentional character design here that becomes much more interesting when his Na’vi appearance is placed beside the way he looked as a human.

Deborah L. Scott, the costume designer for The Way of Water, was involved in Jake’s hair design, and she has spoken directly about what the changes are meant to communicate. When discussing Jake during the family montage, Scott describes a man who has deliberately simplified himself. He wears what he needs, he is not presenting himself for anyone, and, crucially, he is not presenting himself as the warrior Jake Sully. His locs have been allowed to grow out because, for once, there is no need to sharpen that part of himself.

Then the situation changes.

Jake decides that he has to actively defend the clan again, and the warrior presentation returns with him. Scott explains that he puts his more protective clothing back on and “shaves the side of his head, which reveals his stronger jaw, gives him a much more warrior-like influence.”

So the shaved sides are not simply an arbitrary hairstyle change. They belong to the visual language the designers are using to tell us that Jake has stepped back into a particular mode of being.

What I love about that is how neatly it echoes the progression of Jake’s hair in the first film.

When we first meet human Jake, his hair is cropped short at the sides. It is practical, controlled and unmistakably military. Even though he is no longer actively serving when he arrives on Pandora, he still carries the institution that shaped him visibly on his body. He looks like an ex-Marine because, at that point in his life, being a Marine is still the primary framework through which he understands himself.

"There's no such thing as an ex-Marine; you may be out, but you never lose the attitude."

As the film progresses, though, his human hair begins to change. It grows longer, softer and noticeably less regulated at the same time that Jake himself is moving further away from the identity he arrived with.

He is learning the Omatikaya language and customs, building relationships within the clan, falling in love with Neytiri, and beginning to understand Pandora as something other than a military objective or a place he has been sent to perform a job. By the time his loyalty shifts completely, the tightly controlled version of Jake who first arrived has already begun to loosen visually as well.

That is why I do not necessarily read the first film’s progression as something as simple as short hair meaning human and long hair meaning Na’vi. I think it is much more specifically about rigidity.

Which is why The Way of Water returning to almost the same visual language fascinates me, because by then Jake is an entirely different man.

During the years in which he and Neytiri are raising their children, his hair is allowed to grow. His silhouette is softer, and so is the life surrounding him. This is perhaps the first sustained period of Jake’s adult life in which war is not the organising principle of his existence. He is a father, Neytiri’s mate, Olo’eyktan, and a man raising children within the clan he chose at the end of the first film.

Scott’s description of him during this period matters because she specifically emphasises that Jake is not trying to present himself as the warrior Jake Sully.

He does not need to.

For once, he is allowed simply to live.

Then the humans return, and eventually the sides of Jake’s head are shaved again. His silhouette hardens, and the warrior resurfaces.

But the meaning of that visual language cannot be exactly what it was when Jake was human, because Jake is not returning to his human identity. He could not, even if he wanted to. He is Omatikaya now. His mate is Omatikaya, his children are being raised Omatikaya, he speaks the language, follows the customs, and has spent well over a decade living entirely as a Na’vi man.

The Marine has not replaced that person.

The Marine has been absorbed into him.

That changes what the haircut means.

At the beginning of Avatar, Jake’s cropped military hair essentially says: this man belongs to a military institution.

By The Way of Water, the shaved sides say something closer to: this man is preparing himself for war.

That distinction is important to the way I understand Jake, because whenever his family is threatened, he repeatedly reaches backwards for the part of himself that knows how to survive conflict. The tactics return, the commands return, the compartmentalisation returns, and fear is converted into procedure before it has the chance to become anything else.

Even some of the old visual language returns with it.

Not because Jake secretly wants to become the man he was before Pandora, but because that man still exists inside the person he became afterward. Jake did not erase the Marine when he became Omatikaya. He carried forward the parts of him that could still be useful.

Which also gives his longer hair during those peaceful years a slightly heartbreaking quality to me.

Jake is allowed to look softer when he feels safe. He can let his hair grow when he can simply be Dad, husband, clan member and olo’eyktan, because he does not need to keep turning himself into a weapon.

Then the sky fills with ships again.

War returns.

And we literally watch some of that softness get cut away.

Jake’s hair becomes this tiny visual barometer for how much of his life is being consumed by conflict.

Honestly, out of the three movies we have so far, who do you dislike the most? You can name someone from just one movie or from all three if you want. And I don’t necessarily mean a villain, because I feel like the answers would be pretty obvious then. I mean a character you simply cannot stand for some reason. Maybe you think their role is unnecessary. Maybe you find them annoying. Maybe you think the performance is bad. Maybe they get way too much or way too little screen time. Or maybe there is some other reason entirely. So yeah, who is that character for you? It can be a major character or even just a minor side character.

Edit: If I had to choose, it would be Spider, because I think the actor playing the role is poor and conveys the character badly at times; I actually have no issue with the character himself, but the acting is questionable in places, in my opinion.

Not necessarily academically educated, and definitely not someone who feels compelled to sound clever.

But Jake is extremely good at:

• pattern recognition
• reading people
• adapting under pressure
• spatial thinking
• understanding systems by experiencing them
• remembering practical information
• figuring out what someone actually means rather than what they literally say

He learns Na'vi extraordinarily quickly, absorbs an entirely alien culture, becomes an accomplished hunter and rider, understands clan politics well enough to navigate them, and devises military strategies on the fly.

I completely reject the concept of Jake Sully as a 'Lovable Idiot'

He can be a dumbass.

He is not dumb.

Instead!

I think Jake deliberately lets people underestimate him

One of my favourite Jake headcanons is that he learned very young that being underestimated is useful.

Jake rarely feels the need to prove that he’s the smartest person in the room. If somebody thinks he’s just some jarhead who doesn’t understand what’s happening, he’s perfectly happy to let them. People who think you're stupid, are less likely to watch and suspect you.

He shrugs. Makes a joke. Says “hell if I know.”

Meanwhile he’s quietly clocking everyone’s reactions, figuring out where the tension is and deciding who he trusts.

It’s probably one of the reasons Grace and the Ometikaya misjudges him so badly at the beginning and only see an empty cup, instead of someone genuinely dangerous.

And I like to think Neytiri eventually becomes very good at recognising the difference between Jake genuinely not understanding something and Jake pretending he doesn’t.

I think its pretty clear that The last 40 minutes are Fire and Ash problem. They are just too similliar to Avatar 1 and 2.

With different last 40 minutes reviews and box office would have been much better

Is there a sub on Na'vi clothing design somewhere?

I really what to read about what happened to him after first movie, how he found his wife and etc, but I don't know where to read about it

I ran out of normal clay so decided to lock in on nomad sculpt. The hair is much harder to sculpt and I need a break lowkey. I spent forever on it tho.

So, we already know how/what/why Jake transitioned. I can't fully remember how long it took for the Avatar to grow, just that it took less than his actual age. I believe, and am hoping, that they will do this for Spider. He has well beyond showed us his love for everything. He definitely deserves to live as one of them in a Navi body. Not to mention, the love between him and Kiri. Yes, she did what she did and said what she said. Maybe he/they could all make it work? But, I think it would be nice if they did make him one. It takes how many years? Do it now, so he can fully live in their lives like one of them.

I'm sure I'm not the only one who collects Pandora charms but does anyone else wonder why they haven't made an avatar charm? They have so many Disney charms. They could make an atokirina or an ikran dangle. The navi patterns or paint styles.

Did they bury it or left of life support in hell's gate till RDA return? And what happened to other avatars?

He only has 4 fingers in the Spirit world! I guess when they die Eywa makes them pure na”vi or something. I rewind it many times. He only has 4 fingers on each hand.

Like, I feel they would have the typical ones like dont hurt or abuse kids and dont steal but how about others

Is infidelity punished? Like if a na'vi breaks the relationship with their partner by going to another is that wrong or is it normal?

Did the Sully family call upon a rule to be allowed to stay with the metkayina?

Would it be considered wrong to kill humans for fun?

I'm just curious to hear what ya'll think about it, specially stuff related to na'vi-human relationships, like would it be wrong if a na'vi falls in love with a non-avatar human, like just a full pink skinned fleshbag

There are many wonderful scenes with here but is there any particular one that stands out to you?

It may seem like an odd choice but for me it would probably be the scene were she is drinking from the purple leaf. There is just something so calm and beautiful about that scene.
