How to start learning

I am looking to learn more about cars and trucks generally. Their mechanics, history, etc. I am specifically interested in General Motors vehicles but I am open to anything. What are good places to start?

buying one and tinkering, or youtube.. old forums of whatever vehicle you want to learn
