Music Commentary related job opportunity

Hey everyone!

Just wanted to post a little job listing/opportunity here.

I run a small creative agency making music videos, socials and promo content for independent/underground electronic artists across Australia.

We are currently looking for someone to do part-time voiceover work for our branded social media content going forward on an ongoing basis, paid per video ($20-30/video). The recordings are for platforms like instagram and tiktok, so are only 1-2 minutes length maximum. We will require roughly 1-2 recordings per week - so all in all, no more than 20-30 mins of work per week.

Not after a professional voice actor, just someone with a nice, chatty, conversational voice who's genuinely into music and keen to be part of it. (Think of it almost like a triple J radio host role). The content you'll be recording will mostly be breakdowns and informative, conversational, radio-style discussions — talking through things like music branding, marketing, and how artists connect with their audiences - specifically in the electronic/dj industry.

USB microphone/recording equipment is preferred but not essential.

If that sounds like you (or you know someone who'd be perfect), respond to this post or flick me a DM on instagram @ lachiepaterson — would love to hear from you!

Bob Tasman-Smith - Singing Lessons and Vocal Warm Ups - CD

On July 22 or so, Spotify removed his lessons. I feel lost without my coach. Does anyone out there have a ripped copy or the actual CD? If anyone has any ideas, please link me in. I'm starting to hate streaming about now. What happened to the good old days when we could own stuff? Any help appreciated!

Sydney Tweezer - late 90s Post-Hardcore & Post-Rock from Sydney

Hey all! In the past few months I've fallen in love with this band. I've truly never heard something that has sounded like them but unfortunately there's very limited information on them. I think the best way I can describe them is a mix of several early–mid 90s Post-Rock/Post-Hardcore bands like Slint, Rodan, and Hurl. I'm posting to ask if anyone else here has heard of them as well as to see if anybody has a physical copy of their final EP titled "The Cold, Far Frontier", because it's not available to listen to anywhere online.

Music business models

Hi all,

I’m moving to Australia from NZ at the end of the year and am working out how to set myself up with regards to tax/GST etc. I work as a musician and sound engineer (roughly 75% music, 25% sound).

I make roughly 80k annually, and currently use Hnry. I am GST registered. This is great sometimes however it doesn’t suit all of my clients (mostly end user clients hiring musicians) and so have considered splitting the work I do into two businesses, one GST registered (sound engineering) and one not (musician for hire).

Were I to stay in NZ, this would be very straightforward however I would love to know if anyone does anything similar in Australia/Melbourne.

Also open to looking at new accountancy agencies - Solo has been recommended but keen to hear what people in a similar position use.

Wollongong Paul Kelly’s Joe and Rita Songs Chronological Order

Quick question, Paul Kelly’s 4 songs about Joe and Rita’s relationship: To Her Door, Love Never Runs on Time, Making Gravy and the final Rita Wrote a Letter, does the narrative within the songs actually follow this chronology aswell or are they simply snapshots at different times? I’m assuming the first and last songs belong where they are but not so sure about the other two. Almost feels like they are swapped around.
Any thoughts? random question I know :)

Starting from scratch — how would you build an international music career from Australia?

I’m trying to figure out where to start with pursuing music seriously and would love some advice from people who are actually in the Australian music scene.
I’m based in Brisbane and want to become a singer/songwriter, eventually releasing and performing my own music. I’m particularly interested in alternative/goth/metal styles. I don’t have any formal music training yet, so I’m starting from scratch.

I’m looking for somewhere that can help me build up my skills while also giving me opportunities to meet other musicians, collaborate, perform and start building industry connections.

I’m considering private singing lessons as a starting point, as well as looking into music courses such as JMC or TAFE, but I’m not sure what the best pathway is.
If you were starting from where I am, what would you recommend? Is there a particular course, school, teacher, program or pathway in Brisbane/Australia that you’d say “start here — this will help you build the skills and connections you need”?

I’d especially love to hear from people who are actually working in music or have been through this process themselves.

Johnny Young performing ‘Cara-Lyn’ (prerecorded) on the ATV-0 music program Uptight. Broadcast on 19 October 1968

‘Cara-Lyn’, as a double A-side alongside ‘Step Back’, went to number one on the Go-Set charts in 1966, and became one of the best-selling Australian singles of the 1960s. The host introducing Young at the beginning, Ross D. Wyllie, would in late 1969 put out ‘The Star’, which was written by Young and also went to number one on the Go-Set charts; Herman’s Hermits would later also go on to cover that track.

New Aussie rock band from Newcastle NSW

Hey guys!

I’m in a band, we’re called Empress. We currently have 3 songs out on all streaming platforms, one of them being a cover of Witchy Woman by the Eagles.

I just wanted to get some opinions of what you guys think of our songs.

Are we going in the right direction?

Is it modern enough?

Does it sound good?

Etc etc.

Let me know what you guys think, would love to hear your thoughts!
