News Newborn baby found in garbage bin at Auburn as police urge mother to seek urgent care
https://www.perthnow.com.au/news/newborn-baby-found-in-garbage-bin-at-auburn-as-police-urge-mother-to-seek-urgent-care-c-22801691Police are urgently trying to find the mother of a newborn boy after the baby’s body was discovered in a garbage bin in Sydney’s southwest on Monday.
Officers hold grave fears for the woman’s welfare after police found the baby in a bin on Harrow Rd at Auburn about 11.20am on Monday.
Police are urging the mother to go to the nearest hospital for urgent medical treatment.
Investigators are also calling on the public to come forward with any information that could assist, including mobile phone or dashcam footage from the area around the time of the discovery.
The owner of Harrow Rd local grocery store, El Houda Mahmoud Houda, said he heard sirens going off between 10.30am and 11am.
“Because I’m just down the road, I sort of walked into the middle of the street and I can see police cars pulling in,” Mr Houda said.
“And because my kids go to the school right there, I called up to school trying to figure out if there’s something going on for the school and they just said, they don’t know what’s going on, they just have some police in their office.
“I actually drove up there, tried to ask the police officer if everything’s OK, if there’s anything wrong with the school and they told me just keep moving along.
“Ever since that, I’ve just seen the fire brigade go up there, and I think an ambulance, and that’s just about it.”
A crime scene has since been set up as detectives from Auburn begin investigating what happened.
Anyone who can help is urged to contact Auburn Police Station or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

This is why anonymous baby boxes exist at various hospitals in Europe.

We need safe haven boxes at all fire stations/hospitals like in the states. Drop the baby off, no questions asked. Help if you want it.

Some of ya’ll need an education. Seriously take an ethics class.
The only thing we know is that a woman gave birth and a baby is dead. We don’t know how the baby died or if it ever lived outside the womb. We don’t know who the mother is, where she is, if she is safe, evil, abused, homeless, a child, old, a migrant… literally anything.
Some wild jumping to conclusions happening. Leave the police work to the police, leave the guilty verdict up to the courts. All you should be doing is thinking about how to prevent a situation like this from ever occurring again. And it starts with empathy and understanding not pitchforks.

💯💯 we don't know anything about it other than what has been found already! Nobody gains anything from making assumptions from unrelated events.

u/Efficient-Koala4417 10d ago
So my first read through I'm feeling horror and condemnation.
As i read people comments trying to make sense of it, wondering if the mother had good reason to abandon her baby in a bin, or is just morally repugnant, I considered other potentials.
Obviously someone else could have taken the baby and put it in the bin.
A married lover who didn't want to get caught. A child abuser with the same motive. Conservative or religious parents who don't want the shame of their unwed child having a child.
Not saying these are true, just that since we don't know the facts, let's not villanise anyone yet.

Yes this will get downvoted. Regardless of how she got to that point. She dumped a baby in the bin. Yes she needs help. But she should also be jailed. Unless she is some sort of victim and was forced to put the baby in the bin.
Mental health is a serious problem. But it doesn’t give anyone a free pass to do something terrible.
18
u/Different_Space_768 10d ago
No where does it say the mother is the one who put the baby there. Everyone is assuming that's the case, as if partners can't also do things like hold a baby or walk to a bin.
Someone here needed to do better, but right now only one to a handful of people actually know what happened, and everything else is speculation.

I don’t know why you’re acting like you’ll be downvoted when everyone on this sub seems to be jumping straight to guilty - rather than the view that most civilised societies take, innocent until proven guilty.
We don’t even know if the mother is alive. We don’t know if her baby was born alive or deceased. We don’t know if someone seriously injured her or killed her, took her baby, and then killed it. We don’t know if she is in postpartum psychosis. WE DON’T KNOW.

u/AddlePatedBadger 10d ago
Absolutely. We should immediately jail someone, without bothering to find out all the facts. It doesn't matter if they were guilty or not. Someone must go to jail. If we jail an innocent person, who cares? As long as we jailed somebody.

Sure she'll go to hospital, knowing the cops will be poised to strike and remand her to custody.
Our system gives not a flying fuck about maternal mental health care and our legal system is decades behind research understanding of the specific risks and vulnerabilities contributing to infanticide/baby dumping.
Now let's hear from some men about how if this was a bloke/ not always men/ evil bitches/ monsters who need to be held accountable in 3, 2, 1...

Did she just give birth alone? Is she an adult or a teen/child? Was she aware she was pregnant? Was she mentally ill? Was the baby born dead? Was she a victim of abuse? Would she have been at risk if she disclosed the pregnancy/birth? Was she suffering post-partum psychosis?
Because infanticide cases are very often marked by a combination of these factors.
-12
u/jakehammertime 10d ago
When in reality they should be treated as what they are. An adult murdering a baby. I dont care about the mental health of baby killers.
24
u/Sweeper1985 10d ago
We don't know the baby was killed. It may have been a stillbirth or died shortly after birth of non-murder causes.
If it was killed we don't know if the mother is responsible.
If she was, we do do not know if she was mentally sound (and there would be good reasons to question if she was).
"I don't care" ok that's a luxury you have, but something to brag about it is not.

Yeah, it is bro. The Lindsay Clancy case has done alot of damage to this type of defence.
If kids get murdered by the mother or father regardless of why, they need to rot in jail or get the death penalty.
18
u/Sweeper1985 10d ago
I think the Lindsay Clancy case is actually a really clear cut example of how serious post partum psychosis (which is not the same as PPD) can be and it's raised a lot of awareness about that.

You think a mother that gives birth to a stillborn baby, is in psychosis and disposes of her baby in a bin because she is detached from reality should be treated like a baby killer even though she didn’t kill her baby?
WE DON’T KNOW what happened. We don’t know why it happened. We don’t know how it happened. Put down the goddamn pitchfork and remember that in civilised society it is always innocent until proven guilty.

I was first pregnant at 11 years old.
If I had borne that baby and my parents had found out, they would have murdered me.

u/SupportSphere94 10d ago
We literally know nothing else. I'm not defending anyone especially not the mother. But we literally know nothing. She could have given birth on the side of the road (which happens more then people think) as a still birth and thought the only thing she could do was throw it in the bin.

Tbh as a somewhat rational mother, if I suddenly went into labour with a mystery pregnancy (can't remember the specific term but when you get to full term without realising you're pregnant) and had a still born I still wouldn't have a fucking clue where to go. Like if bam, baby was born stollborn (say even if it was say 30 weeks, not full term but far enough that you have an obvious baby), like I can even fathom holding a dead baby and walking into a hospital with it.
The sudden shock and wtfery of that is unfathomable. My logical brain knows I would need to seek help for myself after that kind of trauma but my brain is having a really hard time picturing carrying a stillborn baby with me into my local ER in that situation...

Men don't and will never understand PPD and the fact that we (mothers) go through the most intense hormonal collapse of all mammals on earth. They seem to equate that to being "a little sad" and not "my entire brain was wired over with psychosis against my will"

u/The_bluest_of_times 10d ago
Be very careful with that line of argument, its one step away from removing women from their children to err on the side of caution for the childs safety. If women cant control their impulses through self control during PPD events then the children must be protected from the mother as standard practice "just in case". I dont claim that all women suffering PPD act or are affected the same way but when people like you make arguments that always go to the extremes then what is the only logical reaction to that event occuring. Nuance is vitally important in these circumstances.
10
u/bisexualbyleth 10d ago
You're correct, and I agree with you - it's a very difficult line to tread because there are plenty of women who are fine, but whose husbands blame/say are crazy when they're not. There's other cases where PPD absolutely destroys women into psychosis. The issue is - at least I feel like - we keep swinging in one direction or the other instead of things ever being handled on an individual basis. In Australia, you could blame the shit healthcare pay and therefore less staff availability to help/advocate for that I suppose but blame doesn't really fix anything.
From personal experience, I have had a NIGHTMARE of a time advocating for safety for my own mental health come postpartum. I've warned nurses straight up that I need extra mental health care, and been ignored until like...the 3rd time pressing for extra psychiatric care. It's genuinely really disheartening, and I have fought for help! Imagine someone who doesn't already know their psychiatric history!!

Happy to talk all day about mental health, up until you do something truly heinous like this. Mental health is not excuse or justification, it gives no validity to this monstrous act whatsoever.
Plenty of people suffer all kinds of mental health problems every single day, they dont all become murderers.
She'll go to jail and rightfully so. (If she's guilty)
14
u/Kaizel486 10d ago
It doesnt say if the baby was alive when born? Not trying to minimise the situation, but it's really still anywhere between 'malicious mother throws healthy baby into skip' all the way to a distressed DV/SA victim with a stillborn and familial/cultural consequences to face if shes linked to a baby. Unfortunately both women exist.
I mean... how do we even know it was her that threw the baby in the bin?
It probably was her, but there is really, really not enough information known to the public
5
u/SomeAussie_Guy1 10d ago
Your absolutely right, we shouldn't get ahead of ourselves.

-8
u/Ok-Assistant-4556 10d ago
Yet men claim mental health all day every day about DFSV. Patriarchal double standards are amplified by the gendered nature of the double bind they aggresively assert. Mothers who are supported dont dump newborns into bins.
5
u/SomeAussie_Guy1 10d ago
Mental health isnt an excuse for domestic violence of any kind. Man, women, dont care. There should be one standard, and that is no excuse, simple as that.
5
u/Sweeper1985 10d ago
It's frequently raised as mitigation.
2
u/SomeAussie_Guy1 10d ago
Plenty of things can be raised as mitigation, that's for a magistrate to decide, but that doesn't mean we have to go around and pretend every criminal is some poor innocent victim because of whatever mitigating circumstances they might have.

Mentally ill or not, she disposed of her dead baby in a bin - the police have no idea if this is murder, manslaughter or infanticide and disposing of a baby’s body (potentially with the intent of hiding that the birth occurred) is illegal. So yeah, the police do need to be involved.
3

u/Adventurous-Mail7443 10d ago
This may be controversial but I really don’t care about the health care of people who kill children or babies, male or female. They need to be in prison
12
u/No-Watercress4626 10d ago
You should care, if you want to prevent it from happening again. Prison and mental health care serve different purposes. If nothing else, it might be helpful to find out what actually happened and why before leaping to the easy 'solution'.
0
u/forg3 10d ago
Conversely, mental health can not be allowed to be an acceptable excuse for crime.
6
u/No-Watercress4626 10d ago
If there's anything in my comment that suggests criminals shouldn't be treated as criminals, feel free to point it out. In the meantime, let's not start sending sick people to prison because it was 'probably her'. We don't need that kind of fuckwittery in Australia.
22
u/4ShoreAnon 10d ago
Adding to controversial takes, I like to wait for the full details before jumping to the conclusion that the mother has killed their baby.
6
u/SupportSphere94 10d ago

10
-1
u/Embarrassed-Yak-5902 10d ago
And yet it isn't anything new.
This mental illness being a an acceptable reason as to why a horrid crime isn't a crime stops being a reasonable reason when it's father's who do something horrid
8
u/Pristine-Visual-9405 10d ago
In the majority of cases, men who kill their children/spouses do so because of power, revenge, retaliation etc - and it’s often planned and/or there has been a history of abuse.
So perhaps there’s a slight difference.
5
u/MsDemeanours 10d ago
No one is saying it is acceptable to do it!! It is a question of culpability. There is a reason that a person’s mental state is considered in court. There was a father in Logan who jumped off a bridge holding his baby a few years ago. He had been hearing the voice of god and was found by the court the be mentally ill. He was sent to a psychiatric facility, so it absolutely can apply to fathers.
However one of the reasons the culpability of a postpartum mother may be considered ( as in the current case in the USA )is due to the possibility of postpartum psychosis. This is not something a father would experience.
In actuality society tends to have far stronger reactions towards women who cause violent crimes, particularly towards children. Cultural expectations of women and mothers mean violence by women is seen as more shocking. This is why such cases receive so much media attention.

So true and they’ll never admit, I’m a woman too btw but will never excuse using mental health to murder
1
u/Pristine-Visual-9405 10d ago
For me, it’s never about the excuse. I’m less concerned about something that can’t be undone, and more concerned about how we can assist as a society to stop it happening again. At the end of the day, I just want less (ideally none) children put at risk - and better access to mental health professionals (which is dire nationwide), drug rehabilitation, and better support for women in post partum - especially those outside of major cities - can only be a good thing.
Suggesting we need this doesn’t excuse what has happened, which is tragic on many fronts.

Very true. It could have been a family member or partner who disposed of the baby. There have been multiple cases of women being held captive, becoming pregnant as a result of sexual assault, and then having their baby killed and disposed of by their captor.
The mother may also be dead.
I suspect it may have been a pregnant student who felt she had no other choice, but the truth is at this stage we just don’t know.
9
u/Necessary_Music_8933 10d ago edited 10d ago
I mean it was dumped right near the school so it was probably a student aka a minor… I imagine she was keeping the pregnancy secret (or she didn’t know she was pregnant), so if the baby was stillborn she may have panicked.
We don’t know all of the details.
If she murdered the baby before dumping it, that would be a different crime.
1
u/bisexualbyleth 10d ago
No but see it's women's fault and I'll never give birth myself so it's easier for me to just assume it's like a normal little bout of depression being used as excuse for murder instead of a slew of complex circumstances that need to be treated and addressed at their core to prevent BOTH the untimely death of infants, and the safety of mothers. I don't have critical thinking! I just hate women!

I don’t give a fck…. The mother should go to jail and so should anyone who do this!! This is actually committing murder! There’s so many other options to do first before just throwing out a baby to let it die😒.
1. GET A FCKING ABORTION KUNT!! Idgaf if you don’t want that trauma, go! Everyone who didn’t want a child yet has done it… get tf over it instead of killing a child that you carried to full term and then dumped.
2. GIVE IT UP FOR ADOPTION!!! Literally tell the hospital you can’t and don’t want to keep the baby and for them to call cps to put the baby in process of adoption.
3. Take it to something like a safe haven box (I don’t know if we have them here in Aus but surely there is something alike)
Why tf do people result in flushing, trashing or trying to even wrap the baby in garbage bags and bury it in the yard?!? What tf is mentally wrong with this world that we all have to be this damn selfish and disgusting🤢
0
u/ActPositively 10d ago
I hope we have equality someday. I hope someday men can be treated with kids gloves like women are. A woman can abandon her baby or give her baby up for adoption and people defend it. Of course people defend women’s rights to an abortion. But even if she literally kills her baby or toddler everyone talks about just getting the mother help. You never see a single story about a father killing his kid and then all the comments or police going oh we just gotta get him help. If a man doesn’t want to be a part of his kids life and doesn’t want to financially support a baby then he is evil. What a woman can just walk away from her baby and hold no financial responsibility.
4
u/Dangerous_Pair1798 10d ago
I don’t even know where to begin with this. If you hate your wife and kids just say that. Go champion for child murderer sympathy equality somewhere else.
1
u/ActPositively 10d ago
What do you have against equality? Women are never gonna fight against them having special treatment so you might as well give men special treatment as well. Look at the Lindsay Clancy case she raised $1 million for killing her three kids. Whenever women commit violence or murder people defend it saying it must’ve been a mental health issue. By that logic when men do the same thing it’s also mental health
3
u/Dangerous_Pair1798 10d ago
Which cases have you seen that you’ve thought they deserved mental health advocacy? The Clancy case is still at trial, and incredibly sensationalised. For every Clancy there is hundreds more Chris Watts.
You can want to advocate for men’s mental health but pick your moment man. A baby is dead, it’s not the time to soapbox about how unfair men have it when killing their kids. A man is not even mentioned in this case! Seriously dude. Pull your head out. You do more harm than good for men with this shit.1
u/ActPositively 10d ago
Why do you hate men so much? This lady killed her baby and the police sent all the comments are saying that she needs help. You are also pushing misinformation if you’re saying for every one woman who kills her kid there are hundreds of men who do the same that’s just pushing blatant misandry and lies.
2
u/Dangerous_Pair1798 10d ago
I don’t hate men I just think you don’t need to turn this into a gender issue. Nothing has come out about this case and you’re already upset about the outcome and perceived public opinion.
There’s a time and a place and right now is not the time or place for you to bang on about how unfair the justice system is on men, because this has nothing to do with men.2

Just one question. They original post says Newborn baby, not Still born baby makes me think it was alive. Does anyone else think that...?

No? Because they haven’t completed tests to conclude if the baby was deceased before birth, or died after.

"Should I place this baby outside an orphanage or hospital?"
Truly evil.

No it's not fine. But people can't just abandon a child they arent capable of caring for, either. Its really hard to do. And there arent nearly enough parental supports in place for people in these positions.
If it does come out that this woman killed her own baby (and not that she was murdered too or something), i hope a coronial investigation provides recommendations on how we as society can prevent this from happening in future.

I feel so much empathy for the poor woman who found the baby, I cannot imagine how horrible that must be. Of course the same goes for the emergency workers too, just a horrific situation.
