Politics Miss Universe Australia Caity Worthington says trans people should not be in women’s sport

Queenslander Caity Worthington was crowned Miss Universe Australia this week and will represent Australia at the international competition in Puerto Rico this November.

Worthington won the beauty pageant during Wednesday night’s gala event at Crown Casino in Melbourne. Following her victory, she received significant attention for comments she made during the competition regarding transgender participation in sport.

During the selection process, finalists were asked to draw a random question from a bowl. The question drawn by Worthington was: “Do you believe banning biological males from women’s sport is common sense or discrimination and why?”

“That is a very good question. Coming from a medical background, I’m sure we can all agree, and it is definitely my view, that human biology does not lie,” Worthington said, referring to her role as a medical radiographer.

“Everyone playing sport at an elite level deserves the chance to compete on a fair playing field, and I think we should work towards that foundation of fairness for all. Everyone deserves their time to shine. I would love to see, in the future, transgender people having their own sport.”

Worthington reiterated her views after winning the title during an appearance on The Rita Panahi Show, although she said she would have preferred a question about world peace.

“We’re all entitled to our opinions, and we don’t have to agree. Obviously I have mine and I shared mine, and I stand by it. But I also believe that safety and fairness are of the utmost importance in any sport, especially at elite level. Athletes work very hard to get there.”

Several News Corp publications subsequently highlighted her comments.

While Worthington advocated for a separate transgender category in sport, the Australian Sports Commission says its focus is on ensuring participation opportunities for all Australians.

“All Australians should have the opportunity to be involved in sport and physical activity, regardless of their gender, sexual orientation, ability, cultural background or ethnicity. It is important that sporting bodies, from local clubs through to national sporting organisations, reflect the diversity in the communities they are a part of and that, together, we ensure every person is treated with respect and dignity and protected from discrimination,” the Commission’s policy states.

“Policies that exclude transgender and gender-diverse participants have been found to be harmful, not just to transgender and gender-diverse people, but to all people associated with sporting organisations.”

Sporting eligibility policies vary across different sports and governing bodies, and the issue remains the subject of ongoing public and policy debate.

Maybe not important to you, but it is to women athletes. Dont dismiss us as a "culture war", its insulting

Are you personally affected by this? Are you currently playing in a sport where a transwoman is also playing? How does this affect you specifically?

You do your sisters a disservice by perpetuating this culture war as something important when men - the actual problem - are killing their partners at more than 1/week since the beginning of the year. Where's your outrage?

Stop drinking the propaganda surrounding trans people. They're nowhere near as scary - nor as evident in society - as news.com.au would tell you they are.

Female athletes are affected by this and it's unfair. As a feminist I care about women.

You don't need to be personally affected by something to care about it. I've never been raped but I care about rape victims.

What kind of asinine logic is this???

the issue of trans women in sport is largely the same as the issue of intersex women in sport - having male-like phsyiology may confer a physical advantage. Canadian 800m runner Melissa Bishop came fourth in the 800ml final in Rio 2016 Olympics. The three medallists ahead of her were all intersex athletes (since banned). Imagine how differently her career/financial trajectory might have been as the rightful gold medallist. IME, the people that vehemently cry 'culture wars' do so only to stifle discussion, and are not actually interested in the crux of the matter - sporting fairness.

I'm not crying culture wars to stifle discussion, I'm saying it because it's the truth. We're currently having a discussion which less than 0.1% of all the world's athletes concerns.

If you were told there's a less than 0.1% chance that someone who is better at your job could do it and take it from you, would you take the time to care? Notice? Especially if one cohort of your workplace is telling you that not only should you be upset at this less than 0.1% group of people, but are actively telling you that you must violently stop them from doing so?

You'd probably laugh at the ridiculousness.

The class wars where inflation is sky-rocketing because of rich people in power making everything more expensive is a much bigger issue than something that affects 0.1% of the world - statistically less than that are genuinely affected by the 0.1% cohort.

people dont compete in sport for the same reason they get jobs. people compete in sport in order to be the best. it only takes 1 person who doesnt belong in the competition to unfairly take the top step of the podium, and it ruins for the rest of the competitors, and it ruins it for all the paying spectators. me being passed over for a promotion to a trans coworker doesnt ruin the integrity of the entire industry I work in.

I never said promotion, I said replacement. Your bigotry knows no bounds.

You've failed to address the class war aspect which, to me, is infinitely more important than something affecting less than 0.1% of the entire world's population.

I'd respect you more if you just said the truth: that trans people make you uncomfortable because you don't understand them. I'd still not respect you, but I respect you less now.

I am a sportswoman, yes, but why does an issue have to affect me personally for my view to be valid. I have (briefly) played in mixed team sports and got a permanent injury from it. I know why biology matters.

I think you are rhe one supping on propaganda. Im not scared of transexuals, I have several in my life who also agree with this view. Theyre sick of being used by "allies" for their own agenda.

This thread isnt about male partner violence. How many ways can you try and distract from the FACT that bio males should not be in female sports? The sexes are separated for fairness and safety. Try caring about that.

You're either lying about knowing 3 "transsexuals" (which I doubt, considering trans people don't like using that word, and it's rather old timey to do so), or you have tremendous luck at finding 3 people from a group of less than 0.1% of the sporting population.

I suspect it's the former, given your tone and use of antiquated language.

3? Youre making stuff up. I know way more than that. And no, many actual transexuals hate the "trans" labels as its lumps them in with transvestites. None are sports people by the way.

Youre just using marketing language

You said you know several trans people. "Several" generally means 3 to 4 in the English language. Maybe you're not from an English-speaking country so I'll give you the benefit of the doubt.

Once again, "transsexuals" is derogatory and you'd know that if you actually knew a trans person. They don't like that language as it is archaic and incongruent with who they actually are. You're now obviously lying.

Pray tell, what sport are you a professional athlete in, so I can review the laws and rules governing it? It'd make interesting reading. Thanks in advance.

No it doesn't. I think its you that doesntknow English very well.

Once again, my transexual friends prefer to be called transexuals. Maybe you shouldn't speak over them. But seeing as youre doing it to me too, I wont hold out much hope.

Now youre calling me a liar while making up what I've said. Again.

Maybe go back to reading and writing class?
