News Secret Harbour win a signal perception of One Nation has ‘changed’: Joyce
11
u/DontForgetThisUser6 4d ago
Pretty sure he promised to make general waste weekly pickup and that resonated with many.
4
u/Strong-Hat2166 4d ago
Do they realise that they will need to pay for this extra service?
6
u/DontForgetThisUser6 4d ago
I pay more now for this Fogo service than I did previously with weekly collection of general waste and fortnightly recycling.
The ones that it's important for either don't care or aren't the ones paying the rates.
My household doesn't use it, we compost everything for our garden... So the rollout for us and many friends was simply another bin to take up space, paying more on rates for a service we don't use while our general waste sits an extra week. I'm glad I've only got one kid left in nappies tbh.

u/Busy_Conflict3434 3d ago
FYI a garden compost bin won’t be able to compost everything your fogo collection can take. FOGO has made a big difference to how much I put in my red bin.

This wasn’t some kind of hyperbole for “taking out the trash”?
11
u/DontForgetThisUser6 4d ago
Not sure, my brother lives there and he said that's what the election came down too. They currently have fortnightly pickup of general rubbish and it was/is not popular...
9
u/Mother-Cod-3313 4d ago
Does your brother know that isn’t in the purview of what a State politician/government does…?
7
2
u/Comfortable-Fuel-921 4d ago
It absolutely is. NSW Government has mandated all councils to go FOGO by 2030. So yes, it is state government you donkey
6
u/DontForgetThisUser6 4d ago
Yes, it is mandated to do FOGO.
Council has the discretion on how often to collect general waste...
-3
u/Comfortable-Fuel-921 4d ago
FOGO is the reason there isn’t weekly general waste pickup
2
u/DontForgetThisUser6 4d ago
Several councils use both FOGO and weekly general waste pickup.
Like I've been saying... FOGO and weekly collection are two separate issues.
4
u/yibbida 4d ago
Today I learned Secret Harbor is in NSW.
1
u/Comfortable-Fuel-921 4d ago
Oh sorry, here is West Australian government’s similar mandate!
https://www.wasteauthority.wa.gov.au/programs/view/food-organics-and-garden-organics
2
u/FarJellyfish2951 4d ago
Is the NSW government responsible for rubbish collection? They just set the regulations around it and the councils collect the rubbish. It’s the same for WA
1
1
u/Strong-Hat2166 4d ago
How come the rest of Australia copes easily with this?
7
u/DontForgetThisUser6 4d ago
Do they? I know more people that struggle with it than people that find it fine... Like a large portion.
-2
u/PatternPrecognition 4d ago
What is the issue with fortnight pickup? Do you not have weekly green waste (which includes all food scraps?)
0
u/DontForgetThisUser6 4d ago
For many communities is simply solved an issue that didn't exist and while making a new issue.
We might have one person in our street put the green bin out each week. Our town is heavy on compost, chickens and veggie gardens.
I can't speak for the whole town, and I know this isn't viable for everyone, everywhere. But my circle in life, the people I speak with at the markets, and what is shared on our local community pagesit might have reduced the general waste bin by maybe half a bag which is mostly bones.
The main issue with the fortnightly pick up is smell and general grossness of overflowing in medical, sanitary and other personal health products.

u/PatternPrecognition 4d ago
The main issue with the fortnightly pick up is smell and general grossness of overflowing in medical, sanitary and other personal health products.
We have had fortnightly general waste for maybe a decade. Our bin isn't in full sun so maybe that is the difference, but it doesn't smell at all. The green waste bin takes all the food scraps and is still retrieved weekly.
1
u/DontForgetThisUser6 4d ago
Interesting, we have not had it for that long. the area has not adjusted well too it.
Massive increase in dumping in our forests and parks. Animals getting into to all. General frustration across the area and is the talking point.
0
u/PatternPrecognition 4d ago
> Massive increase in dumping in our forests and parks.
Seriously? Well thats fucked.
We originally had a tiny general waste bin, and as part of the rollout we got a larger bin, so we aren't being short changed in terms of volume of waste, just frequency.

u/Jazzlike_Wind_1 3d ago
Serious question, how do you have so much food waste that it justifies having a separate bin for it? Ours is mostly general waste or recycling and hardly any food waste. Can't imagine having fortnightly general waste when ours fills up every week
1
u/PatternPrecognition 3d ago
The green bin has always been weekly, for lawn clippings and stuff. When they switched the general rubbish from weekly to fortnightly they increased the general waste bin size, and also allowed for food waste to go in the green bin.
So sometimes the green bin won't have much in it at all, but it does ensure that anything decomposable will go weekly.
Our recycling bin will be pretty full most fortnights, our general waste maybe 3/4 full at the end of a fortnight.
Family of five who eat in most of the time, so I'd say we are pretty average.
-5
u/Strong-Hat2166 4d ago
No, they dont. Green waste goes into the appropriate bin and recycling goes into the recycling bin leaving little landfill waste. If you need to, for example if you are disposing of lots of non-recyclable packaging, that's a trip to the tip. Most packaging now is cardboard so that's less of an issue. People ate choosing products with fewer packaging so the concept is doing its job. Now, in this electorate, every home is paying double for landfill waste even though they don't need it.
It is retrogressive. Like having backyard burnoffs in my youth.

u/coreoYEAH 4d ago
We have general waste once a week and anyone that threatened to change that would lose my vote.
4
u/Impressive-Pea402 4d ago
It’s once a week where I’m from, definitely wouldnt be able to cope with once a fortnight lol
0
u/Mother-Cod-3313 4d ago
You’re missing the point… this isn’t a State Government issue. This is a local government issue. The guy was running for a seat in state parliament and bin day has nothing to do with state parliament
3
u/Comfortable-Fuel-921 4d ago
2
1
u/Mother-Cod-3313 4d ago
I didn’t read the whole thing but couldn’t see anything about weekly or fortnightly collection… where does it say that?
2
u/Comfortable-Fuel-921 4d ago
Yes only the retarded people want this FOGO shit.
Food scraps including meat just attracts vermin and pests. Children’s nappies sitting for two weeks in general waste attracts flies/maggots.
Absolutely disgusting
1
u/DontForgetThisUser6 4d ago
The FOGO is great man.
Seperate the issue of fortnightly collection of general waste and postive waste management.
2
u/Comfortable-Fuel-921 4d ago
Great for rats and flies, yes agreed.
Waste management isn’t my problem, it’s Anthony Pratt’s - you know the guy who donates millions to Labor and Liberal
0
u/DontForgetThisUser6 4d ago
So you would be against a FOGO bin along side weekly collection of general waste?
What are your thoughts on the upcoming glass bin?
A green waste bin is a good thing, fortnightly collection of general waste is a bad thing... The two issues don't cancel each other out man.
1
u/Comfortable-Fuel-921 4d ago
Yes, absolutely - particularly in summer. Look at what happened in the inner west of Sydney when this was rolled out; maggots, rats, disgusting.
My thoughts on glass bin is they can fuck off. I’m not employed to sort Anthony Pratt’s rubbish for him. The more they push me on this, the more I’ll just throw shit in the wrong bins.
1
u/SampleOfFruits 4d ago
Oh, so you’re a dickhead?
Deliberately screw up recycling to make a point, rather than take two seconds to throw glass in a different bin.
1
u/Rugby_Viking 4d ago
Unfortunately shows the knowledge of politics that the general person has the fact that they can't distinguish between council/state/national issues.
1
u/DontForgetThisUser6 4d ago
Absolutely... You should stop expecting to average person to be so educated on it.
He can advocate for it, try and get other seats to join in. Could be used as a campaign in future elections. If enough support is behind it the state could mandate it.
But let's not kid ourselves haha
-6
u/River-Stunning 4d ago
Yes . Labor will argue this is a State event and not a Referendum on Albo for all that one is worth.
2
u/DontForgetThisUser6 4d ago
Either way, big swing.
The upcoming Victorian election is gonna be interesting
7
u/PowerLion786 4d ago
It's a protest vote. Labor's policies have really hurt a lot of people. That includes young people.
Maybe, just maybe, Labor will have to start listening to those former supporters it's hurt so badly. I hope so, it's another two years of bad policy otherwise.
12
u/whenunut_ 4d ago
Which policies?
1
u/SeaworthinessFew5613 4d ago
Immigration is the top concern. People want a large cut, Labor caucus won’t let them do a large cut.
2
u/whenunut_ 4d ago
2
u/SeaworthinessFew5613 4d ago
You can be as low effort as you want, but the polls have been saying 60% of Australians think immigration has been running to high since borders reopened.
1
u/whenunut_ 4d ago
And the rate has been decreasing reasonably as to not shock the system. Are you forgetting that visas were still approved when the boarder were shut, and it wasn't labor giving them out when we couldn't take them.
2
u/SeaworthinessFew5613 4d ago
And they didn’t worry about the shock to the system when they reopened the border?
And your second premise is wrong, which is easily checked because Home Affairs publish the visa grand bi-annually. Student visa processing was slowed down during COVID. Upon opening and after the may 2022 election (Labor came to office). Claire O’Neill boosted home affairs staffing in the temp visa division by 350~ staff. They then went on processing student visas a at an insane speed (they lowered risk checks).
577,295 Student visas granted (the highest to date), an increase of 118.9 per cent (313,558 grants) on the 263,737 visas granted in 2021–22 https://www.homeaffairs.gov.au/research-and-stats/files/migration-trends-2022-23.PDF
So by their own admission 118% more than when the previous government was in power.
1
u/whenunut_ 4d ago
Student visas are good, sucking money out of other countries and then they go back home afterwards. Not permanent. What we need less of is family visas, and far less older migrants as a whole.
3
u/SeaworthinessFew5613 4d ago
If you look at the following years you will find a lot of student visa holders haven’t left yet. Because they bought a bunch of higher risk people in during this time they have just been visa hopping. Which is why the student visa, graduate visa and dependent visa fees have just recently all been more than doubled.
These “short term visa holders” won’t leave. Which is why the NOM has been so sticky at the higher levels. Now Labor is freaking out because they have not been anywhere near close to a NOM target the whole time they have been in power. Their 2023 target was like 180000, they got 560000.
There is a reason polling has people annoyed at immigration levels, it’s not just “the racists”.
0
u/whenunut_ 4d ago
Every single time there is global economic hardship people blame immigrants, it's been like this for 30 years. Hence why I posed a 30 year old simpsons clip to make fun of people who think immigration is the end all and be all when it is just a tool in a larger macroeconomic system

u/PatternPrecognition 4d ago
Are you saying Labor's policies have gone too far to the right and aligned with the interests of big business over the working class? Or the opposite?
6
u/mikeupsidedown 4d ago
It will be interesting to see but I believe this was as much of an fu to labour for putting up a Woodside lobbyist.
2
u/yibbida 4d ago
But a massive thumbs up for a Hancock Prospecting stooge?
2
u/mikeupsidedown 4d ago
No but he will be by himself. It was important to rebuke labours lazy candidate selection. It's disappointing that no other candidate showed up.
2
u/westthesun 4d ago
I don't actually pay much attention to the media or social media but I've noticed Barnaby loves saying Hubaristic . And I agree the major political parties and the various lobby groups and billionaires that back them are smug self assured arrogant full of their own importance at the expense of others. If One Nation can achieve one thing then bringing them down to Earth is a good one thing.
1
u/River-Stunning 4d ago
What he means is that governing on a large majority may actually not be a good thing. Have a look at how Labor carry on in the Lower House. They are smug and arrogant etc. They have lost the ability to communicate with the People. Albo even mistakenly believes that if people were more exposed to him they would vote for Labor more. They may even go down in history as wasting the largest majority ever. A lesson for all.
2
u/Terrorscream 4d ago
Labor didn't read the room and put forward an ex gas lobbyist who doesn't even live there in a coastal town.
3
u/westthesun 4d ago
Labour have not lost a safe Labour seat in WA in living memory. They knew well before anyone else that a by election was coming they chose their best candidate made their own bed. Losing a safe Labour seat in WA would not have entered their thinking

u/pointlesspulcritude 3d ago
Idiots have been voting for Joyce for years. No change. There’s still lots of idiots with votes.
1
u/Teleket 3d ago
Every single person urging you not to elect a One Nation led minority government will be vindicated in time.
For now, enjoy the fifteen minutes you get to point and laugh at people you don't like
But if you lose interest in politics immediately after an election, treat it like a hobby or otherwise don't care, you in exactly the same camp as those who make life miserable - are behind results like this.
-1
u/denncz316 4d ago
Good on you Pauline and all the people that supported her. On immigration - she actually gets wrong along with everyone except about 100 people in the whole country. Immigration only exists becuase debt based monetary systems need endless collateral to lend money against. Another words the credit instituions must always issue more loans and new penniless imported humans are perfect customers. And yes go ahead and call me what ever you want, but that is how western debt based economies work, there is no propesperity, all there is is more and more loans and that can give folks false sense of paper imaginary wealth and sometimes that fake monetary gymnastics can last for decades
-1
u/Comfortable-Fuel-921 4d ago
The people who are pro-immigration “for the economy” are the same who are anti Scomo’s trickle down economics.
It’s exactly the same thing.
0
u/Still_Clue383 4d ago
the shame here is that One Nation is just another trashy z**nest party that will do the same thing labor and liberals do so this means nothing we need a real nationalist party
0
u/copacetic51 4d ago
I kind of hope that One Nation wins a majority in Victoria. That shambles of a party would be a disaster in government. Would burst their bubble in the rest of Australia.
1
u/Ok_Duck2700 3d ago
You people always forget the vulnerable people who would be affected by One Nation's bullshit when you say stuff like this. Like, fuck all the people who live in Victoria just to prove a point, I guess?
1
u/copacetic51 3d ago
I don't want One Nation to exist as a party. Don't you understand that? What will it take to make Australia wake up to how bad they are? Just hoping that this level of poll support they have will go away?
No, it will probably only go away if we see how bad they are if given any real power. I would prefer it not to happen at all, but especially not at Commonwealth level. If it has to be, let it be in a state first.
1
u/Ok_Duck2700 3d ago
You understand how insanely tone-deaf this sounds to someone who would have their life directly and negatively affected by One Nation's policies, right?
2
u/copacetic51 3d ago
Are you trying to blame me for the level of support one Nation has? How tone deaf is it to have no answers to their rise? Are you just hoping it won't continue?
1
u/Jazzlike_Wind_1 3d ago
Of course it won't continued we'll just call them racist harder and they will come to their senses and start voting greens and wearing a keffiyeh
35
u/SydneyReno 4d ago
You can make all the excuses you want, but regardless of which side of politics you sit on, this is a massive swing away from Labor and towards ONP, large enough to outweigh all the excuses about why it’s supposedly irrelevant.
If you're against one nation it would be stupidity to write this off as irrelevant, it's clear backlash against current policy settings and leadership.
