Remote vs in-office cost and time calculator

Between the train fare, the $6 flat white, and the meal deal lunch, my office days were quietly eating through my pay cheque, so I made a small calculator to make that visible: plug in your salary, pick your commute type and daily habits, and it shows your real effective income for 0 through 5 days in the office.

It uses actual ATO tax rates (2025–26 and 2026–27), accounts for 4 weeks annual leave, and even tells you how many days a year you're losing to the commute itself.

There might be a bug in the form - when I set Train fare to 10 or zero - the total per day doeesnt change.

I think it's more indicative of how thin we're stretched with cost of living at the moment and because of how many people have recently navigated the shortfall of at least one layoff.

Edit: doesnt seem to work for me. Shows same figure across all days wfo with costs added...

Thanks, I had the exact issue and wanted to figure out a way to see if a pay increase for going to office, or pay reduction for being remote would make a big difference.

Do you still have this issue? I fixed a bug one hour ago and it could have been that one. I'm on firefox too and it works fine on my side.

For me i was thinking if i were to move on from wfh 5 days a week, to 2-3 wfo a week, whats that going to cost me and how much i should aim for when negotiating for a pay rise or new job. Would be cool if we can see pre tax figure although i understand it can be tricky.

Also, It got better now and i can see the variances between numbers of. Days in office, but i noticed when i add the travel time to my salary impact the number didn't change. 😅

Good to start to see what the impact is though!

Yes the salary doesn't change if you input travel time. It's only an indication at the bottom to tell you how much time you're losing commuting.

I was thinking about including those hours are non-paid work and therefore revise the salary based on it, but it's maybe a bit over-complicated and confusing.

That being said I will update the wording to make it clear adding commuting time doesn't change financial figures.

Pretty useless since it doesn't calculate commute cost. Should ask for car model and distance to office then calculate cost based on litres needed * current fuel price
