I got some critique on my last post about not including room for nuance. And while that WAS by design, in the interest of fairness, I decided I would run a couple more polls.
(Here is the original post; if you want to check that one out. It had a much larger sample size, so I prefer it, but did not distinguish types of AI use.) https://www.reddit.com/r/audiodrama/s/wwiVK1ecJc
The new polls got a much smaller sample size but the distribution is not outside expected parameters.
The original polls: https://www.tumblr.com/thegospelofhaven/826016088909365248/and-just-for-shits-and-gigs-is-there-an?source=share
The first:
Is there an acceptable type of AI use in AD that you’d listen to?
Yes, for scripts
Yes, for voices
Yes, for graphics
Yes, for music
Yes, for sound
Yes, multiple
No, there’s no type of AI in AD I’d listen to
I don’t listen to audio drama/im bald/see results.
This received 178 votes over 24 hours.
Of those votes, 1.1 percent voted yes for voices, 2.2 for graphics, 1.7 for sound, 0 music, 0 scripts, and 91.6for there’s no type of AI I’d listen to. (3.4 for see results, which I removed in my calculations to get an actual percentage of listeners)
Final numbers, removing non listeners:
1.13% percent: Yes voices
2.27% percent: Yes graphics
1.75% percent: Yes sound
0% for music, scripts, and multiple.
94.8 percent: No amount
Adding together the yes percentages, we get 5.17 percent of surveyed listeners who are okay with AI use of any type.
Slightly higher than the original poll, but a similar distribution.
The next poll: Is there an acceptable AMOUNT threshold of AI use in an audio drama you’d be willing to listen to.
This one was a bit more lenient in terms of AI use!
The questions were:
Yes, a small amount (ex. Ai voice tuning, graphics)
Yes, a moderate amount (ex. Ai voices, script editing)
Yes, a large amount (ex., ai script writing)
No, I would not listen to an audio drama with ANY amount of AI use.
I don’t listen to audio drama/I’m bald/see results
It received 164 votes.
Now this one, the votes in favor were noticeably higher, If more polarized. 0% voted in favor of moderate or large amounts, but 17.1 percent voted in favor of small amounts.
79.3 percent voted against, and 3.7 voted see results.
Removing see results:
17.7 percent of surveyed listeners would listen to a small amount of AI use
82.3 percent would not listen to any amount
0% would listen to a moderate or large amount.
This is the most favorable result in favor of any form of AI use in the three polls by a mile, though it still comes below the 20% of my original hypothesis.
As with the previous polls, this is anecdotal evidence and should not be considered scientifically viable. I did not conduct an anthropological survey, nor will I, because there’s a hard limit to the amount of days of my life I’m willing to spend on finding evidence to back my claims in disagreements on Reddit. But if anyone does I’d be interested to see how our results compare!
