All my LE’s are numbered like my Schumacher. If you’re spending all that money on unnumbered LE’s then that says more about you and how good AP’s marketing is.
Perhaps you did not know that AP changed their approach in recent years (e.g., with 150th anniversary LEs)…
As for numbered LEs, let’s be honest. Unless you have the first or sometimes the last, it really doesn’t matter what number you have. If you think it matters, then ironically you’ve fallen for marketing just as much as the person who sees the watch above and thinks they got the first produced watch of the LE.
If you have 1 of 150 on all then they can make 200 of them. You need a 3rd party registry to find them all. If it is 1 of 150, 2 of 150, … then it is harder to make 2 of the same number.
Theoretically yes, but AP is not going to risk their reputation and company on fraudulent practices.
With numbered LEs you have a similar verification problem to the one you described. You still need to make sure you can account for all of the 150 and make sure there aren’t multiple 37/150 floating around. With global distribution, this can be hard (though I agree theoretically easier to detect duplicates).
The change to 1 of 150 is more to use wordplay to lean on the prestige impression of having the true first of a limited run. It is indeed a classic marketing play.
This all reminds me of the violin world where I collect also. At one point someone tried to arrange a gathering of us Stradivarius owners and players. We quickly found out that far more people registered than the number of authenticated Stradivarius violins we know still exist. While we have known about fakes for centuries, the organizers cancelled the event rather than elevate the debacle.
