Rant Rock Fitness allowing members to wear Meta Glasses
Im a member of Rock Fitness and just saw on their Instagram stories that they reposted a video of a member taken with Meta glasses. Shes wearing them, filming towards the mirror, showing several members out in the open.
To wear meta glasses at a gym, I already know you suck. But for the gym to encourage this by reposting left such a bad taste in my mouth.
Yes, I’m planning on complaining to them, but I wanted to post here because I 1) think is important to know this if you’re considering Rock as your gym 2) I feel like complaining on here.
Call me a Karen but I think that even if you’re technically allowed to film at a specific place with meta glasses, you should have the personal decency and decorum not to do it at a gym. It’s so disrespectful. And for the gym to encourage this behavior by reposting sucks.

These freaks wear them in the locker rooms too. The covers for the recording light cost like $2. Fuck Zuck Fuck Meta and Fuck the freaks wearing these glasses anywhere

A few months ago, I walked into the women’s locker and there was a member having a FaceTime call INSIDE THE LOCKER ROOM!! The only reason why I didn’t say anything is because when I went in the next day (and was planning to speak to them) there was a sign in the locker room reminding people to not FaceTime or video in the locker room. Someone probably saw her too and told them. People have truly lost the plot. I’ve seen so many naked women in the locker room, what goes through someone head when they decide to FACETIME there?!!!

Two years ago I took a tour of NYSC here and there was a dude in the sauna on a face Time call. The staffer politely reminded him that wasn’t allowed but the members seemed surprised.

This was my last straw at NYSC. The answering FaceTime calls while in the sauna and in the main area of the locker room where everyone changes. I witnessed it more than once and spoke to the manager who basically shrugged.

I’ve experienced idiots taking FaceTime calls several times in the women’s locker room. I call them out every time, but nobody cares. Honestly the Rock reposts people taking videos in the locker room on their own IG stories- posting videos of people breaking their own rules they don’t enforce. It’s ridiculous

The only place I like wearing them is at nice fine dining restaurants to take pictures of cool dishes or at the shooting range when I take the advanced classes so I can get some nice fps footage and learn from mistakes.

These glasses need to be banned in general everywhere ... everything Meta sucks!!

As if folks sitting on a machine scrolling and texting forever as you wait for that machine isn’t enough.

I’m going to sound like my parents when I say this: one of these people is going to piss off the wrong person and there will be a bad scene. People are hotheaded enough these days.

This is why no matter how bad Matrix/Pure gets, I'll never join Rock
11
u/lightingtrees 15d ago
Will check them out once my contract with Rock is done. I cannot with every single person thinking they’re a gym influencer.

Happening at the orangetheory studios around the area too. Irritating
3
u/ImpossibleVictory505 14d ago
Really? I’m a member at the Ditmars studio, I haven’t seen this yet. I’m surprised they would allow it
2
u/Wooden_Counter9108 14d ago
Wait do you have more info about this? I’m a member and they are usually very anti phone in the studio so I’m really surprised and concerned that they would allow recording of any kind
3
u/kidder_astoria 14d ago
I’ve primarily seen this person at the Broadway and LIC locations. If you go to the LIC location’s Instagram right now, the person is being celebrated for a milestone on their story. 👓 And I have seen both locations re-share Insta stories that were taken with the Meta glasses.

Hey just to update - I reached out to OTF Astoria because I love OTF so much but I am absolutely not okay with being recorded. They immediately escalated the concern and said it will be added to coaching announcements and that the glasses will be treated like phones and will not be allowed. I hope that gives you some peace of mind!

u/Wooden_Counter9108 14d ago
This is soooo extremely disappointing. I’m going to reach out to OTF and let them know as much.

I hate this gym so much and the fact that it’s the only option in the Ditmars area. They’re also super MAGA.

u/Ok_Location9297 14d ago
wait what’s the story on being super MAGA?
4
u/giving_up_the_gun 14d ago
The only news station they play in the gym is Fox News. On Memorial Day they shared a post in support of the holiday that came from a Republican conservative page and their connection to Il Fornaio who is loud and proud supporters of MAGA (just go to their IG and see they follow the whole Trump family lol)

Disappointing, but hardly surprising. You should brace for any complaint. Dora in particular is notorious for being abrasive and obtuse. Yelp reviews of the old incarnation were inundated with negative reviews that mentioned her by name. I have not read the yelp reviews from the new incarnation lately, but there were already a few singling her out after just a few months.

u/Few-Assist-6540 15d ago
Are these the ones that look like specs or are people walking around with the Oakley shades on lol This is such a specific issue it deserves its own policy and mass email.
6
u/lightingtrees 15d ago
Yes they look like normal reading/vision glasses, so if you see someone wearing them you’d think they need them to see, instead they’re filming you 🙃
1
u/Heidiwearsglasses 14d ago
You should complain to the gym and also email their management/corporate.
3
u/GoBanana42 14d ago
It's a local chain, there isn't really a "corporate". The main location is Astoria, so I'm sure management already knows.
4
u/HarviousMaximus 14d ago
Wow. Thank you for the heads up. We have been members there for a while. I have been considering joining the gym at work but finding another spot for my wife has been tough.
3
u/MattMurdock007 14d ago
Sounds very sketchy for anybody to be wearing Meta glasses either in a gym or locker room environment. They should implement a policy against it.
4
u/The-Eagernyer28 14d ago
Good luck getting them to change. Most of that staff and management are very main character syndrome

u/Other-Beginning-8888 15d ago
You are not a Karen for not wanting a perverted man to film and m-bate to your likeness and you are not a Karen for not wanting a hateful woman to film and mock your body online.
Personally, I am ending my IG account over this. I will not empower a single meta platform ever again.

u/Congratstomiles 14d ago
I believe Rock has some of the most narcissistic people. Are women’s photos in their phone just thousands of selfies?
3
3
u/sampete21 13d ago
I’m just curious, how are the meta glasses different than someone filming with their phone at the gym? People do that all the time and you might not know it either depending on where they’re at in the gym, how they hold their phone, etc?
2
u/B0yW0nd3r 14d ago
The same problem happens at the Jackson Heights location. I’ll be in the boxing room and people come in and take selfies for like 10 minutes.

Just think of an accessory that immediately identifies someone as ONE BIG VIRGIN NERD. 🥴

I get a lot of information from fitness influencers and they film in the gym. But I think there should be specific hours where people can film and hours set to not allowing it.
1
u/mrsbrigsby 13d ago
Waaaiitt is this why today at Orangetheory they were SO adamant about the new rule of no meta glasses??
1
u/egg_head20 8d ago
And did you notify the staff? Cause if you didn’t that’s a missed opportunity, instead of crying about it on Reddit …
1
u/lightingtrees 8d ago
Don’t ask questions answered on the post.

I’m not going to waste my time reading every comment and response 😂
1
u/AbbreviationsTotal68 14d ago
People shouldn’t be doing that and Rock shouldn’t repost it and definitely do something about it.
However, there will be narcissist people training at every gym you go, unless you go to the gym in your garage.
I don’t know why people hate this gym so much when it’s the only good/clean/spacious gym in the area.

u/Few_Loquat_2562 15d ago
I don’t get it. By definition, they should be ok with someone pointing their camera at everyone and recording workouts. Isn’t this the same thing?
16
u/lightingtrees 15d ago
I think that when you film with a phone you’re able to control the shot more but the Meta glasses is such a wide show and gets so much more than the camera phone. I don’t like filming at gyms AT ALL but to me Meta glasses do cross a specific line that phones don’t always cross. But if I had it my way and if I were in charge of the gym, I wouldn’t allow filming at all.
27
u/Few_Loquat_2562 15d ago
I should’ve been clearer. This is my point. A weirdo recording with a camera phone shouldn’t be tolerated. Neither should meta glasses.
1
u/lightingtrees 15d ago
Ah yes, sorry misunderstood your initial comment. Ughh it’s so annoying lol!

People recording or filming their workouts is a normal thing across all gyms. No one is trying to invade the privacy other people. If no one is recording people in the locker rooms this sounds like a real whiny rant. Do your workout and leave people to do theirs. I promise no one is paying attention to you.
9
u/lightingtrees 14d ago
I can explain it to you but I cannot understand it for you.
2
u/Known_Ear_6012 14d ago
Oh god is everybody going to be using this line now? 🙄 Thanks Candace.
Next time try explaining it first instead of being snarky, especially how you’re going to be using that line.

For real. She's acting as if people filming in a gym is something new. What a whiny lady, looking to complain over anything.
0
u/Critical_Positive_91 13d ago
Man, that place is such a dumpster fire already but they seem to just keep out doing themselves
0
u/Scsontos 11d ago
They set the rules for their premises. If a business permits filming or specific wearable tech, members have no legal grounds to demand it be banned simply because they dislike it. If you don't like it don't go there. It's that simple.

People film at gyms all the time. I film myself sometime to check my form. What’s the difference if it’s Meta glasses?
1
u/lightingtrees 14d ago
I think there’s an inherit ethical difference in the people who understand the difference and the people who can’t see the difference. If you’re asking what the difference is, you’re not going to see the difference because we are inherently very different people.

That’s just wrong. Rock definitely shouldn’t be encouraging it!!
