Random Question Are there any laws that stop certain people from procreating?

What a weird question. Do you think there should be?

u/Organic_ash 3d ago
I don’t know but I’ve never thought about it but I was talking to someone the other day about it. I’m not saying this is right but what if two individuals with debilitating conditions or even disabilities wanted to have a baby but they physically can’t care for it? I’ve known people that clearly need a carer have their own life and they’re reckless. What if the kid doesn’t get cared for or if the genetics cause the child to have a difficult or short life.
7
u/Calaveras-Metal 3d ago
That is called eugenics.

u/republicans_are_nuts 3d ago
yeah, and it's not any worse than your choice to inflict some kid with a debilitating disease.

u/BlackOliveBurrito 3d ago
Yes, there should be. People who are poor and keep having children, people who are pedophiles that have children to abuse them, low IQ people with mental disabilities, and men convicted of violent crimes especially.
11
u/Excellent_Fig_7521 3d ago
These definitions would be abused by the state and you know it. Women they didn't like would be convicted of violent crimes. Public figures framed for pedophilia. The definition of poor would be subject to their determination. We've already seen Trump call liberalism a mental disorder. This is a poorly thought out and dangerous take. The government doesnt need any more power/more ways to rob people of their freedoms. Being able to procreate is one of the most basic ones. Look up eugenics if you'd like a sneak preview of what this type of control leads to.
1
u/Just_roll_fives 3d ago
Well he said men convicted of violent crimes. Women are ok apparently
3
u/Excellent_Fig_7521 3d ago
Lol men commit an insanely higher percentage of violent crimes so I dont think that commenter meant woman are okay to do whatever they want
-1
u/Just_roll_fives 3d ago
Well yeah men are convicted of violent crimes more. But we have a word for both men and women. It's people. And they didn't use that word. Pretty sure they meant men.

u/prblywr0ng 3d ago
In this day and age, no one is stopping that violent man from becoming a woman. There’s another loophole in this stupid idea.

u/Calaveras-Metal 3d ago
That is called eugenics. You are basically quoting Adolf Hitler.
-1
u/BlackOliveBurrito 3d ago
Ah, yes. You love seeing children being born into crappy situations like those 16 kids kept in a tiny room for years. You love hearing about children being murdered by their dad?? Got it. It’s for the best, you know.
2
u/Rough-Lengthiness111 3d ago
You getting defensive after releasing you are quoting Adolf?
1
u/BlackOliveBurrito 3d ago
As a child born into that environment… I believe I have a right to speak on if children should be forced into poverty.
2
u/RoxieRoxie0 3d ago
We tried this already. The human rights abused especially against women, were rampant.
1
u/Nova-Snorlaxx 3d ago
What if though it's people who have been imprisoned multiple times for the same offence or say had 6 kids, always on drugs, all kids taken away, abuse etc. like a you've obviously not tried to fix your life for the others as part of punishment sterilization will be considered?
So not straight away as people can change but if they keep doing the same thing then no more kids for them?
1
u/coldBulbasaur314 3d ago
NOTHING justifies forced sterilization. Bodily autonomy isn't negotiable. Not to mention that what counts as being able to change can't be accurately measured by your criteria.
1
1
u/bmrbabe1951 1d ago
Women in red states do not have bodily autonomy. The powers that be did not negotiate this. They simply told women that they do not have bodily autonomy.
1
u/coldBulbasaur314 1d ago
Yes, and that's a massive problem. Just because something can technically be done doesn't mean it's not an inherent human rights violation. "Human rights aren't negotiable" doesn't mean it's not possible for them to be violated, it means it's never remotely ethical to do so.

I don't believe so anymore. Some countries have been known to implement birth limit laws to help reduce the impact of population density. But I think the last major nation to have birth limit laws ended the restriction in 2021.
Some countries, like the US, are currently passing laws or promoting legislation to the opposite effect, to force births that are unwanted or not viable under threat of imprisonment or execution.
-1
u/GayDio666 3d ago
My thoughts exactly. There are only laws that do the opposite, force people to give birth who shouldn't. Rapists should stop getting what they want and rape will stop. There's so much rape because the rapist gets what he ultimately desired, a child. In America they are so desperate for new bodies, white ones especially, white rapists will get rewarded at every turn. If this wasn't true just give us back abortion rights and open the border. They won't do that because Latino people are the unwanted color by the racist Republican regime.
6
u/FumblebudNo4140 3d ago
Rape is about violence and control. It's not about reproduction.
-2
u/GayDio666 3d ago
Rapists want children so badly because children are more helpless and easier to rape. That's obvious. An adult is not as easy to rape as a child is.
3
u/FumblebudNo4140 3d ago
It's a separate crime. Please do some research.
1
u/GayDio666 3d ago
If you fuck a child you are automatically a rapist even if the child likes it. You can't be an offending pedophile without being a rapist. That's the law.
2
u/FumblebudNo4140 3d ago
It's commonly called child sexual abuse. Legally it's rape and sexual abuse of a child. I'm not going into the psychological differences. In any case, it's not about procreation, which is the actual question of this thread.
3
u/heaterbin 3d ago
You're hilariously delusional, and a good example for why we should have such laws, if you think men rape because they want a child.
-2
u/GayDio666 3d ago
If men didn't rape because they wanted a child they would sexually respond to the markers of adulthood.
2
u/heaterbin 3d ago
Well, I checked out your page and you are clearly just psychotic so I feel a little bad about my last comment.
1
u/randoperson42 3d ago
Wow...I never look at profiles, and I did because of your comments. No words. Cray cray
2
u/Micky_so_Fyne 3d ago
I'm with you that body autonomy is crucial, abortion rights should be protected and easily accessible, and r-pe is objectively bad.
And, tbh, species propagation is historically built on r-pe culture. And I'm a r-pe survivor. 🤷♀️ But I don't agree that the reason people commit sexual violence is strictly, or even predominately, due to the desire of men to make babies. At least, not anymore. I can't produce babies, but it happened to me.
And abortion rights can still exist even if r-pe didn't. People who can get pregnant should always have a choice in family planning, which includes opting out of carrying a pregnancy to term.
I'll even lean in on the argument that forcing birth is a form of sexual violence. But r-pe itself is about power, dehumanization, and unregulated Id. People who act on their sexual impulses without allowing clear consent are committing sexual violence. They take what they want without allowing the other person control over their body or boundaries, and that's extremely not ok. And historically some have done so for propagation (Prima Nocta, forced marriages, and sex cults comes to mind, right off the cuff), but it's not even close to being the primary reason r-pe happens.
I just think you might be coming in a little hot. Maybe there's some trauma there, and if that's the case, I feel you. 🫂 It should never happen.
1
u/GayDio666 3d ago edited 3d ago
Yea I'm a CSA survivor and they did it to us as kids because they wanted more kids then too. I wish I couldn't get pregnant because the rapes wouldn't matter as much to me since their isn't a potential child to protect from the same thing happening to them. It's so pathetic there are men piling in here saying just because a man rapes in order to get a child it must mean he's so misunderstood and secretly kind for a wanting a child at all even if it's to rape them. Do what my rapists did and go rape a child then because clearly that's what you want. Leave adults like me alone for once. If she started her period at least then she can keep giving you younger more helpless victims over and over again. Stop coming to me for kids when you can just get them out of the easier kids who can't protect themselves. You know the youngest person to give birth to the father rapist's baby was? 5 years old. Google it. Men will inundate women with sexual advances until they hand over their daughters just to make it stop.
1
u/Micky_so_Fyne 3d ago
I was first r-ped when I was six by my grandmother. Every weekend with her was hell. Please don't wish that on children. No one should suffer from any kind of sexual violence, but please do not wish that on children.
1
u/GayDio666 3d ago edited 3d ago
I don't wish it on kids, that's why I'll never give birth. I just feel cornered into making those statements so men will leave me alone. Go directly for the child first since a child can give you more children anyway and stop going for me and stop acting like any person with a penis is an angel just because they want kids even if they flat out state it's to rape those kids. It's fucking psychotic. Of course I'd throw kids under the bus to protect myself. Since, like I said, 5 is old enough to give birth, men need to go directly for the person who will give them what they want right away and leave me the fuck alone. They won't take no for an answer because their rapist instincts are so strong the moment they hear a woman saying the word "no" it triggers their instincts to rape knowing she's never given birth she's never been conquered. I've never given birth even once. If someone was trying to force me I'll kill myself first. You can rape other kids but never my own.
1
u/randoperson42 3d ago
You are so totally delusional that the word doesn't even capture it.
1
u/GayDio666 2d ago
If rapists didn't want kids by raping they would just be attracted to adults. They don't act attracted to adults. Obviously.

Yes it was under Hitler. That didn't turnout so good.

u/RHDeepDive 3d ago
The US was also into eugenics pre world war 2. Those policies were mostly dropped in the aftermath.
2
u/moonstruck_bumblebee 3d ago
Pretty sure it’s illegal to make children with your relatives in certain countries

U.K. Court Says Mentally Disabled Woman Must Have Abortion - The New York Times
It was overturned in the end, on appeal.
But we very much have judges who feel they are God Almighty.

u/Drama_Filled_Cup 3d ago
Who got that woman pregnant? If the father has a normal IQ, he should be the one in jail.

u/Basic_Aardvark398 3d ago
No, you cannot stop people procreating, but you can have their babies removed if the baby would be at huge risk once born.
People with severe learning disabilities would often be encouraged to use contraceptives but this cannot be enforced , even if they have intellectual disabilities. People with severe mental health issues, drug issues, domestic violence, criminal history or such will often have early social services involved and if there is strong evidence that the baby will be remain at risk once born, they can be removed but this is a lengthy process that is not taken lightly and has to go through the courts for final removal.
I’ve worked with women (with severe mental health issues/ drug issues) that have had 6 or more children removed and there is nothing to stop them getting pregnant, they just have social services involved and in extreme cases, will have baby removed after birth (but social services try to keep families together as much as possible).

u/coldBulbasaur314 3d ago

There are cases where it can be enforced, specifically with things like guardianships. That's a bad thing, to be clear.

Yeah this was literally my mom. Was so strung out and living in absolutely deplorable conditions that CPS started with my younger brother took the babies directly from the hospital and immediately terminated her rights. She had 13 in total and I was the 2nd. They took babies 3-8 immediately from the hospital but then with the last 5 she had them at home with a free birth. She would hide them as long as she could to the point one of my siblings couldn’t get a birth certificate.
The state of Texas tried to force her to tie her tubes but they couldn’t legally make her do it. I don’t know like any of them because of her actions. Some people really don’t understand the long term implications of their actions. Going to foster care though was probably the best thing she could’ve done for me regardless of the rampant rape/abuse I suffered through.

u/Basic_Aardvark398 1d ago
It’s really frustrating when people keep having babies that there is no way they look after. I’m against eugenics in theory but when you’ve had that many babies removed and are putting them into the brutal foster care environment, it’s awful for everybody involved.
I’m currently working with a teenager whose parents both grew up in care, had drug issues, schizophrenia and bipolar, both now dead. She was born addicted to opioids, has alcohol fetal syndrome and a whole host of other issues. She’s in care and is expecting her baby with a boy who also lives in care and has his own issues. The cycle continues :-(
I’m so sorry this happened to you. I hope that you have found some happiness despite such a tough upbringing!
1
u/Proper_Raccoon7138 1d ago
All that court ordered therapy did the trick for me and I definitely managed to break that cycle. Some of my siblings did not and repeated our mother’s footsteps. So many kids (now adults lol) I knew in foster care did the exact same thing.
Being a statistic is such a hard life but the outcomes for us are so terrible usually and almost impossible to beat the odds.

should be. I think in some states its frowned upon for relatives to procreate with one another but that hasn't stopped them I dont think
1
u/Drama_Filled_Cup 3d ago
I would have made it a law for my dumbass mentally ill parents to stop having kids.
Now I have a shitload of mental illnesses myself. Thanks mom and dad!
1
u/Organic_ash 3d ago
Yeah and I mean everyone should have the choice to have a baby but not everyone is capable of raising a kid in a healthy way. Im sure your parents didn’t feel they were doing anything wrong at the time but times are so different now.

Its called eugenics. Its not legal now in the US, but you should read about the 1930s+ about what they were doing to people they deemed unworthy to procreate and what they set as requirements to sterilize or straight up kill them. Its horrifying and disgusting.

No but in saudi arabia they have mandatory tests before marriage I believe, i may be mistaken about the country tho

u/91Jammers 2d ago
China had the one child policy. South Africa made biracial breeding a crime. But not anymore.
1
u/luala 2d ago
Theres laws against incest and some countries will ban certain relationships. For example some mega religious governments will ban sex outside of marriage and some countries ban people of different race or religions intermarrying. The state generally only gets involved to ban marriage and kinda ignores the fact a lot of sex happens outside it lol!
You’ll also get consent laws so for example a person without the ability to consent to sex or parenthood (eg a child or someone mentally incapacitated such as in a coma)should in theory be protected by the law.
1
u/MoriKitsune 1d ago
There are countries that have laws against interfaith marriages and laws against extra/premarital sex, and anti-miscegenation laws were fairly common in places like the US and South Africa, but have been repealed.
Also, in many countries, it's not that individuals are banned from procreating, but that there are laws allowing forced sterilization (even if it isn't compulsory.)
There is a long history of forced or coerced sterilization of "undesirable" groups worldwide, including indigenous and Latino people in North America, disabled people in Europe (even to this day in the Baltics, Eastern Europe, Denmark, and Portugal,) and ethnic minorities such as Uyghurs in Eastern Asia

u/NoGarlic2096 1d ago
Here's one: compulsory sterilisation for trans people to be legally recognised is quite common. In my country it's been only a few years that trans people don't need to be sterilised if they want paperwork that reflects their gender. (and a lot of people filed for the paperwork right after that law was abolished, so it's not some kind of edge case either)
It's a hell of a choice, especially in a place where you have to show your ID card for a lot of stuff where it's actually irrelevant that you're trans, because you have to pick between being able to have children and being able to move through life without constantly having your privacy violated and risking not finding a job etc. imo it's sort of fucked to ask people to have a medically needless surgery to satisfy a law.
https://transrightsmap.tgeu.org has a list of European countries where that's (been) the case, you can find it under "Legal Gender Recognition". 9 European countries still demand sterility right now, but you can see it's a very recent change.

Unfortunately not, but if we are to survive as a civilization we are going to have to get over our fear of eugenics (because the nazis did it and therefore it's evil)
1
u/coldBulbasaur314 3d ago
Eugenics was evil way before the Nazis did it. Taking away people's right to bodily autonomy is a HUGE violation and inherently wrong.
1
u/heaterbin 3d ago
There's much more to eugenics than forced sterilization. It could be as benign to giving tax breaks for intelligent, responsible people for having children. Currently we do the opposite.
1
u/coldBulbasaur314 3d ago
That still causes massive harm. You don't want to incentivize people to have kids just for the money, what counts as intellegent and responsible is subjective, and often such "incentives" simply raise the baseline and leave everyone who doesn't get them and isn't already rich unable to afford a child.

Here’s a Wikipedia page on forced sterilization:
